WASHINGTON - The Georgetown men’s cross country team won the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship today, held at the Kings Island Golf Course in Mason Ohio. Totaling 33 points, the No. 14 Hoyas edged out the Villanova Wildcats, tabbed No. 25 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), by just one point, winning in thrilling fashion. The men win the title for the first time since 2008, picking up the seventh overall championship in program history. The No. 18 women finished second with 54 points behind No. 6 Providence. Georgetown Men’s Cross Country; 1st; 33 points (2 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 10)
The Georgetown men’s cross country team used a 41.7 second spread to capture its first BIG EAST team title since the 2008 season. Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John’s High School) led the way for the Hoyas, finishing second behind three-time BIG EAST individual champion Patrick Tiernan of Villanova with a time of 22:44.0 over the 8,000-meter course. “It was a monumental day for us,” Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Michael Smith said. “It’s historically a competitive meet for us and today was no different with Georgetown and Villanova going head to head. It’s an honor to be crowned the champion. “I want to give credit to Coach Bonsey,” Smith continued. “He is coaching that group day in and day out and the way he has led this team is phenomenal. The way Jon Green is running right now, he’s right there as one of the best in the country. It’s great to see such selfless running on the men’s side and I’m really excited about where they are and I truly believe the best is yet to come.” Georgetown continued with the same depth they had all season long as all five point scorers finished among the top 10 of the race. The Hoyas managed the win over the Wildcats with the low stick from Green along with a tighter spread from the remaining six runners. No. 14 Georgetown led the field with 33 points, followed by: No. 25 Villanova (34), Providence (68), Butler (97), Marquette (152), Creighton (195), Xavier (196), DePaul (228) and Seton Hall (255). Georgetown Women’s Cross Country; 2nd; 54 points (5 / 7 / 8 / 11 / 23)
Despite falling short against the Providence College Friars, the Hoya women managed the smallest spread among its five point scorers, with just 39.6 seconds separating cross country All-American Andrea Keklak’s (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury/Princeton) time of 19:58.3 and Heather Martin’s (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) 20:37.8. The Hoyas relied on a strong team effort with a still abbreviated lineup. “On the women’s side, we were really pleased with the performance,” Smith said. “We have closed the gap on Providence since competing against them in September and that’s still without Samantha Nadel who should be back racing by regionals. That performance is due to a huge step up from both Autumn Eastman and Haley Pierce and an overall strong team performance. At this level, you really need consistency and good team races. I’m really proud of what this team did today and I’m looking forward to the next race.” The No. 18 women finished second with 54 points behind No. 6 Providence (26). No. 26 Villanova finished third with 86 points followed by Xavier (124), Butler (136), Marquette (149), Creighton (167), DePaul (234), St. John’s (245) and Seton Hall (316).
