Ward, Russell Run to Victory at USATF Marathon Championships

3/15/2015

LOS ANGELES -- Jared Ward (Provo, Utah) ran away over the final miles to win his first American title, while 2008 Olympian Blake Russell (Pacific Grove, California) pulled away late to win the women’s race, Sunday morning at the USATF Marathon Championships in Los Angeles.

The USATF Marathon Championships are the fourth stop on the 2015 USATF Running Circuit. The top 15 finishers at each race on the circuit qualify to compete in the2015 .US National 12K, that takes place on November 15 in Alexandria, Virginia.

Ryan Hall (Flagstaff, Arizona) took out the men’s race aggressively, building a lead of two minutes by 10 km, while looking to build upon a solid half marathon performance during his marathon build-up. Hall’s intense early pace backfired though, as chase pack of Daniel Tapia (Mammoth Lakes, California), Matthew Llano (Flagstaff, Arizona) and Ward caught Hall just past the halfway mark of 13.1 miles.

As quickly as Hall moved from first to fourth, he veered to his left and stepped off the course, clearly feeling the quick early pace.

Tapia, Llano and Ward pushed on, clearly ahead of the second chase pack, all focused on winning their first USATF title. Tapia led the trio past the 15-mile mark, when Ward took over and started to push the pace.

Ward and Llano ran stride for stride for the next two miles, as Tapia fell back to third, until Ward put in another surge in mile 18, putting a ten-second gap on Llano, a lead he would never relinquish.

Ward hammered mile after mile, focused ahead and silently thinking of improving upon his runner-up finish at the 2014 USATF Marathon Championships. With 5 km to go, Ward had a large enough lead where it was clear the win was his. Into the final homestretch Ward looked relaxed, crossing the finish with a smile in 2:12:56, setting a personal best by over a minute.

Behind Ward, Llano held strong to finish second in 2:16:13, setting a nice marathon best himself. Hansons-Brooks veteran Mike Morgan (Rochester Hills, Michigan) used a conservative first half of the race to pass Tapia in the final miles to place third overall in 2:16:56, while Tapia charged home to finish fourth in 2:17:14.

Rounding out the top five, Max King (Bend, Oregon) ran a strong second half of the race to pull away to a 2:17:30 finish. Stephan Shay (Huntington Beach, California) similarly finished well to place sixth overall in 2:18:06, while Scott Smith (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) in 2:19:40, Sage Canaday (Boulder, Colorado) in 2:20:02, Patrick Rizzo (Colorado Springs, Colorado) in 2:21:54 and Juan Carlos Trujillo (Boulder, Colorado) in 2:22:01 rounded out the top ten.

While the men’s race thinned out very early on, the women’s race saw a strong contingent of runners running stride for stride much of the first half of the race. 39 year old Russell, Heather Lieberg (Helena, Montana), Brianne Nelson (Golden, Colorado), Sara Hall (Flagstaff, Arizona) and Becky Wade (Houston, Texas) led the way, running as a pack mile after mile. It wasn’t until 16 miles that the pack started to break a bit, at which point Russell, Lieberg and Nelson broke away.

The American trio ran together until mile 19, when Russell put a small gap on Nelson and Lieberg. Lieberg faded off the back, while Jodie Robertson (Melville, New York) surprised the field, coming from way back and establishing herself among the top three.

Russell continued to challenge and extended her lead a few seconds every mile to the finish, as the veteran finished hard and won the women’s title in 2:34:57.

Meanwhile, Nelson, Robertson and Lieberg battled for second, taking turns leading, all three handling the final miles as best they could as the temperatures rose and Russell continued to pull away. In the end, Lieberg pulled away to finish second.

Russell bested runner-up Lieberg, who claimed second once again after finishing in the same spot in the 2014 edition of the event, this time running to a 2:35:32 finish. Nelson hung on gamely after struggling the final two miles to place third overall in 2:36:07, as Robertson and Wade finished fourth and fifth respectively in 2:36:18 and 2:37:30.

To round out the top ten, Kathleen DiCamillo (Providence, Rhode Island) tried her best to catch Wade, but ultimately fell short with a sixth place finish in 2:37:59, while Lauren Jimison (Mammoth Lakes, California) ran by herself much of the second half of the race to place seventh in 2:39:16. Meghan Peyton (Richfield, Minnesota) of Team USA Minnesota finished eighth in 2:41:50, as Sarah Cummings (New York, New York) and Rachel Jaten (Spokane, Washington) placed ninth and tenth, in 2:42:20 and 2:42:29.

GatorZone.com Staff Report
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Gators arrived for the second day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday with national title aspirations.
They came up short in the team standings, but four Gators won national championships in their respective events – all establishing school records -- to make it a memorable evening at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
The UF men finished second with 50 points, and the Florida women placed fourth with 36 points. Host Arkansas (63 points) claimed the women’s title, followed by Oregon (46.5), Georgia (37) and Florida.
Oregon repeated as men’s champion with 74 points, clinching the title with a 1-2-3 finish in the 3,000 meters. Oregon (2009, ’14, ’15) and Florida (2010, ’11, ’12) have won six of the past seven NCAA Indoor national titles.
Marquis Dendy
Gators senior Marquis Dendy (photo, left) followed his national title in the long jump on Friday to win the triple-jump crown with a leap of 17.37 meters/57 feet. Dendy’s winning leap was the longest for a collegian since 1992 Olympic silver medalist Charlie Simpkins jumped 17.50 meters in 1986 for Charleston Southern, and the third-longest in NCAA history.
Dendy also won the indoor long-jump title in 2013 and both the long jump and triple jump outdoor titles in 2014.
Dendy’s indoor title in the triple jump continues Florida’s recent grip on the title. The Gators won four consecutive national indoor titles in the triple jump from 2009-12 as Christian Taylor (2009-10), Will Claye (2011) and Omar Craddock (2012) won national championships.
“As far as the men go, I’m very proud of Marquis Dendy,’’ Gators head coach Mike Holloway said. “A new meet record, a new school record. I know he’s been jawing a little bit with Christian and Will about breaking their records. I’m sure he is going to let them know.
“Overall as a team, I think we kind of lost who we are a little bit this weekend. I think in some instances we thought people were going to lay down for us and it didn’t happen. We fought through some injuries … when you come to a meet like this and score 50 points and finish second in the country, it’s something we can move forward with.”
Not to be outdone, Florida’s Ciarra Brewer won the women’s triple jump with a clinching leap of 14.01 meters/45-11.75 feet. Brewer was one of three Gators to claim their first national titles on Saturday night.
Brewer's jump bettered the previous school record (13.88/45-6.50), set by Shara Proctor in 2010.
Stipe Zunic
Meanwhile, senior thrower Stipe Zunic (photo, right) tossed the shot put a school-record 21.11 meters/69-3.25 feet to claim the title and also set a Croatian national record. Zunic is from Zadar, Croatia.
In the women’s 200 meters, junior Kyra Jefferson blistered home in 22.63 seconds, edging Oregon’s Jenna Prandini (22.74) for the crown.
“I’m very proud of the ladies,’’ Holloway said. “The big thing for the ladies is that we have to understand and believe that we belong here. We used to have a tendency to get here and start thinking we don’t belong here. Until we do that, until we wake up and believe we are one of the best teams in the country, we are going to come up short.”
Jefferson’s best time this season entering the meet was a 22.81 she ran at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 14.
The four individual titles came in a flurry for the Gators, who entered as strong threats to contend for both the women’s and men’s national titles.
Florida nearly won five individual national titles.
Bridgette Owens
UF's Bridgette Owens narrowly missed out on a 60-meter hurdles title Saturday. (Photo: Tim Casey)
Gators senior sprinter Bridgette Owens finished runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles. Owens posted a time of 7.88 seconds, setting a school record and the fifth-fastest performance in the event for a woman this year.
In a photo finish, Owens narrowly lost to Kentucky's Kendra Harrison (7.87).
The No. 1-ranked Florida men won three consecutive indoor titles from 2010-12 and under Holloway, the No. 2-ranked UF women have surged back into title contention in recent years.
The UF women won their only indoor national title in 1992.
The Gators picked up six points in the men’s standings when Southeastern Conference 400-meter champion Najee Glass finished third with a time of 45.77 seconds.
Glass started fast and led much of the race until being overtaken by LSU's Vernon Norwood. Norwood won with a time of 45.31 seconds, followed by Texas A&M's Bralon Taplin (45.55). Florida’s Arman Hall had to pull up in the race and did not finish due to injury.
On the women's side, Florida's Robin Reynolds (53.14) finished eighth in the 400 to pick up a point for the Gators.
In the 60 meters, Shayla Sanders placed sixth for the Gators with a time of 7.26 seconds.

MIT junior Cimran Virdiof Walnut Creek, California, and sophomore Maryann Gongof Livermore, California, highlighted MIT’s performance at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend, earning individual titles in the pole vault and 3,000-meter events, respectively. Both student-athletes collected All-America honors with their first-place performances.
Virdi, who won her second-consecutive pole vault championship, recorded a clear of 13-01.50. Westminster College junior Marissa Kalsey also cleared the same height, but Virdi made her jump on her first attempt while Kalsey did not make it until her third try, giving Virdi the win. With the title, Virdi became the first Engineer to win multiple championships in track and field.
Gong captured the 3,000-meter final, rushing past Cornell College sophomore Abrah Masterson during the final lap to seal the win. She crossed the finish line in 9:47.62 and collected her third All-America honor this weekend. Gong also recorded a third-place performance in the mile (4:57.42) and helped the MIT Distance Medley Relay team to a second-place finish with a time of 11:47.43.
MIT concluded the meet in fourth place with an overall team score of 34 points, improving on their mark of 22 points from a year ago. Tech also garnered seven All-America honors and two honorable mentions.

Over 15,000 Runners Share Insights, Decisions and Trends in Biennial Industry Report

WICHITA, Kan. - March 16, 2015 - Running USA, the national non-profit trade organization for running events and businesses, announced today the release of the 2015 National Runner Survey.

A biennial report, the National Runner Survey assesses the demographics, lifestyles, attitudes, habits, trends and product preferences of the running population nationwide. Results from the National Runner Survey reflect "core runners," that is, active adult participants who tend to enter running events and train year-round.

"The 2015 National Runner Survey is a resource for everyone in the industry to use," says Running USA CEO Rich Harshbarger. "It's a tool race directors, charities, brands and media can use to connect in a more meaningful way with the runners they wish to reach."

A few key findings in the 2015 National Runner Survey, include:
  • Today's core runners are highly educated and affluent, with 74.9% having earned a college degrees and 72.2% reporting a household income of more than $75,000.
  • Core runners are active participants who train year-round and log nearly 23 miles per week.
  • Technology continues to play an increasing role in training, with 57.6% carrying their cell phones and 52.1% carrying GPS devices with them on a regular basis while running.
"We're continuing to see a rapid rise in the influence of technology in running," says Harshbarger. "Whether that's cellphones being the most frequent item taken on runs, over 75% of respondents using social media to post race photos or online shoe purchases continuing to trend upward, technology is driving runners' decisions."

Running USA worked closely with more than 50 organizations to help distribute the online survey to various constituency groups from August through December last year. A total of 15,206 runners nationwide (62.4% female, 37.6% male) responded to the survey.

To learn more about the lifestyle, trends and product preferences of core runners, purchase your copy of the 2015 National Runner Survey and find answers to 80+ questions. A full report of the National Runner Survey is now available at http://www.runningusa.org/2015-national-runner-survey.

USTFCCCA Division I All-American Awards Announced

By Dennis Young, USTFCCCA
March 16, 2015

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the 2015 Division I All-Americans on Monday. Finishers 1-8 in each event at the Division I Championships in Fayetteville were designated First-Team All-America, the rest of the finishers were designated Second Team All-America, and any qualifiers who did not finish or were disqualified from their event were designated Honorable Mention.
Arkansas’s women and Oregon’s men won team championships in dominant fashion, and those two teams have the most First-Team All-American honors. The Razorback women had the most out of any men’s or women’s program, with seventeen, and Oregon led the men with fourteen.
For Arkansas, five different women were double First-Team All-Americans. They would be Dominique Scott in the DMR and 3000, Chrishuna Williams in the 800 and 4×400, Tamara Myers in the long and triple jumps, Taylor Ellis-Watson in the 400 and 4×4, and Sparkle McKnight in the 4×4 and DMR. Scott’s accomplishment was particularly notable, as she anchored the winning DMR on Friday night and won the 3k on Saturday.
Edward Cheserek of Oregon anchored the winning DMR, won an epic mile, and took second in the 3k, making him the only Division I man to win three First-Team All-American awards and the leading scorer of the men’s meet. Two other Oregon men were double first teamers: Eric Jenkins won the 3k and 5k, and Will Geoghegan did the same double behind Jenkins.
Jenkins and Geoghegan were among twenty men to win two First-Team honors this weekend.
Oregon actually only had one more First-Team All-American than host Arkansas, as the Razorback men had the second most men’s honorees with thirteen. They were followed by (again, First-Team only): Texas A&M with nine, Texas, Florida, and Texas Tech with eight, TCU with seven, and Nebraska, Illinois, and Penn State with six.
Those were the ten schools with the most representation on the F-T AA list; they all hail from the three leading conferences. The SEC had the most men’s first-teamers with 45, more than the Big 12’s 33 and the Big Ten’s 25.
The SEC was much more dominant on the women’s First-Team, with more honorees than the next two conferences combined. 61 First-Team All-Americans came from the SEC, 32 from the MPSF, and 27 from the ACC.
Kentucky (ten) and Oregon (nine) trailed Arkansas in total first-teamers, but those two teams did boast the only triple honorees. The Wildcats’ Dezerea Bryant came in the top eight in the 60, 200, and 4×4, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 200. And the Ducks’ Jenna Prandini won the long jump and took second in the 60 and 200, making her the highest point-scoring woman of the meet.
Twenty-two women earned double First-Team awards this weekend.
Behind Arkansas and Kentucky, Baylor and Florida tied Oregon with nine First-Team awards. Trailing them were Texas with eight, Georgia with seven, and Stanford, Notre Dame, and Southern California with six.
All 668 All-American awards are listed below, separated by gender and split into First-Team, Second-Team, and Honorable Mention.
