National Athletes of the Week Include First-Ever NJCAA DIII Winners

By Dennis Young, USTFCCCA
March 31, 2015

NEW ORLEANS— Explosive performances at the Texas Relays and historically great Division II performances headlined the second National Athlete of the Week awards for the 2015 college outdoor season.
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the awards on Tuesday.
Included in the honorees were the first ever National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III winners.
Ten winners this week; they were Michael Stigler of Kansas and Alex Gochenour of Arkansas for NCAA Division I; Hendrik Nungessof Texas A&M-Commerce and Emily Oren of Hillsdale for NCAA Division II; Tyler Bauer of Muhlenberg and Frances Loeb of Johns Hopkins for NCAA Division III; Jean Soutein and Danielle Riggins of Iowa Central for NJCAA Division I; and Walter Briggs of Delhi and Pam Watson of Rowan-Gloucester for NJCAA Division III.
Click each of the student-athletes’ names above or keep scrolling below to read about the exploits that made all eight worthy.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to eight (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions, plus the NJCAA) collegiate track & field athletes.
Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.

DIVISION I MEN – Michael Stigler, Kansas

Senior | Canyon, Texas
Stigler won the Texas Relays 400 hurdles in a world-leading time of 48.44 seconds, which would have made him one of the top ten performers in the world each of the last two years. That time carries a suitcase of superlatives: it’s a stadium, meet, and school record, the fastest NCAA regular-season time since 2011, and the eighth-fastest time ever run in March.
He absolutely dominated the hurdle final in Austin, beating UTSA’s Keyunta Hayes by over a second. The race must have brought Stigler ample relief–it was his first PR in the event since 2013, and with no long hurdles indoors, he spent the winter pursuing secondary events, including a 1:54 debut in the 800 meters. Stigler has been the runner-up at NCAAs in the 400 hurdles each of the last two years.
Honorable mentions: Shawn Barber, Akron and Trayvon Bromell, Baylor

DIVISION I WOMEN – Alex Gochenour, Arkansas

Junior | Missouri Valley, Iowa
Gochenour won the heptathlon at the Texas Relays with a score of 6027 points, which is the best NCAA regular-season score since Brianne Theisen’s 6353 in 2012. The junior set personal bests in the 200 (wind-aided), shot put, high jump (outdoor best), 100 hurdles, long jump (wind-aided)–that’s five out of seven events–en route to beating her old career best by more than 500 points. She missed Makeba Alcide’s school record by just 23 points. As our Kyle Terwillegar pointed out, she would have PRed even if she skipped the javelin, and probably would have cracked the college all-time top ten if she didn’t come about seven meters shy of her javelin PB.
Honorable mention: Quanesha Burks, Alabama and Irena Sediva, Virginia Tech

DIVISION II MEN – Hendrik Nungess, Texas A&M-Commerce

Sophomore | Heusenstamm, Germany
Another week, another nationally elite TAMU-Commerce throw. A week after his teammate Masoud Moghaddam was recognized for his exploits in the hammer, Nungess is the NAOW for having the best javelin throw at the Texas Relays. He launched the spear 73.24 meters (240-3); though he was competing in the "B" section, it would have won the "A" section, which contained several Division I first-team All-Americans.
That throw of 73.24 makes him the sixth-best college thrower at any level this year, and the fifth best javelin thrower in Division II history. It also breaks a Lone Star Conference record that had stood since 1988.
Honorable mention: Drew Windle, Ashland

DIVISION II WOMEN – Emily Oren, Hillsdale

Junior | Holland, Michigan
After impressive double national titles in the 3k/DMR indoors, Oren made history in her outdoor season debut. She smoked a mostly Division I field in the steeplechase at the Raleigh Relays in 10:04.79, winning by thirteen seconds. Oren is now the third fastest steeplechaser in DII history, and per Hillsdale, set the NC State facility record. It’s very, very early, but Oren has the fastest time by a collegian or an American in 2015, and the tenth fastest time in the world this year.
Honorable mention: Heavin Warner, Central Missouri

DIVISION III MEN – Tyler Bauer, Muhlenberg

Senior | Northampton, Pennsylvania
Competing at the Lafayette 7-Way Invitational, Bauer added his name to the Division III all-time top ten lists with a winning javelin throw of 68.64m (225-2) – a PR by more than three meters. It was his very first throw in a meet since finishing sixth at 2014 outdoor nationals, and it made him the tenth best performer in DIII history. Bauer broke a nineteen-year-old Centennial Conference record, is the DIII national leader, and currently sits seventeenth on the all-college list.
Honorable mention: Darren Centi, Redlands

DIVISION III WOMEN – Frances Loeb, Johns Hopkins

Senior | Wynnewood, Pennsylvania
Loeb covered 10,000 meters in 34:42.63 at the Raleigh Relays, good for the fastest DIII time and the ninth-fastest time by a collegian in 2015. Racing against mostly Division I and II competition, she broke a twelve-year-old Centennial Conference record by nearly a minute, and the Hopkins school record by over seventy-five seconds. Loeb did all that in her first 10k since 2013.
Honorable mention: Buffalo State 4×400

NJCAA DIVISION I MEN – Jean Soutein, Iowa Central

Freshman | Homestead, Florida
After taking just 22nd at indoor nationals and failing to break forty-eight seconds indoors, Soutein skipped the 47s and 48s entirely at Arkansas. He vanquished a mostly NCAA Division I field with a NJCAA-leading 400 time of 46.94 seconds–the tenth fastest by any collegian this year.
Honorable mention: Jahrod Henderson, Colby CC

NJCAA DIVISION I WOMEN – Danielle Riggins, Iowa Central

Freshman | Racine, Wisconsin
Competing at the Arkansas Spring Invitational, Riggins turned in an extremely impressive triple. She won the 200 in 23.65 seconds, took second in the 100 hurdles in 13.80, and ran a leg of the runner-up 46.12 4×100 meter relay. The open times are NJCAA national leaders, while the relay is currently the second fastest by a junior college in 2015.
Honorable mention: Gleneve Grange, New Mexico JC

NJCAA DIVISION III MEN – Walter Briggs, SUNY Delhi

Freshman | Kingston, New York
Briggs set the NJCAA DIII-leading mark in the 400 hurdles, beating the field at the Wagner Invitational by nearly two seconds. He covered the lap in 56.83 seconds, automatically qualifying himself for nationals.

NJCAA DIVISION III WOMEN – Pam Watson, Rowan College at Gloucester County

Freshman | Haddon Heights, New Jersey
Watson won the javelin at Widener’s Danny Curran meet with a division-leading toss of 40.62m (133-3). Though RCGC is DIII (say that ten times fast), Watson’s mark is actually the best by a women’s javelin thrower in the entire NJCAA this season, per TFRRS.

UCM moved up to No. 1 in the week three edition of the National Team Computer Rankings released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while the Chico State men held on to their top spot by the slimmest of margins.
Unlike the NCAA Division I and III rankings (which include 2014 marks from returning athletes), Division II only includes marks from the current 2015 season in its rankings formula. In the early section of this outdoor season, the rankings function more as a display of who’s performed the best to date this year and not necessarily who will be contending for the NCAA titles Memorial Day weekend in Allendale, Michigan.
Only USTFCCCA member programs are eligible to be ranked.
Central Missouri took over the top women’s spot on a week in which each top-five spot was occupied by a new team. Azusa Pacific moved up two positions to No. 2, Saint Augustine’s moved up three to No. 3, Angelo State dropped two to No. 4 and Lewis improved two positions to No. 5.
For the men, Chico State was just able to hold off No. 2Minnesota State, which made its outdoor debut this past weekend. No. 3 Texas A&M-Commerce held steady, checking in just ahead of the No. 4 GVSU men making their season debut. Angelo State moved up a spot to No. 5 to round out the top five.
Leading the charge for the Central Missouri women was thrower Heavin Warner. The junior is the top-ranked hammer thrower in Division II, the No. 3 discus thrower and the No. 5 shot putter. Heptathlete Madison Smith also played a big role, notching the top heptathlon and the top high jump.
Giving the Minnesota State men a big push were seven performances ranked among the top five nationally in their respective events. Emmanuel Matadi turned in the No. 2 run at 200 meters and the No. 3 sprint at 100, while Nathan Hancock scored the No. 2 decathlon.
At the regional level, Ashland took over atop the Midwest Region and the Nova Southeastern claimed the top spot in the South on the men’s side. Three new women’s teams ascended to the top of their regions: Central Missouri in the Central, Lewis in the Midwest, and Chico State in the West.
The NCAA Division II Championships will be contested May 21-23 at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan.

Scott Pesch
Head Track & Cross Country Coach

Phone: 5955
Email: Scott.Pesch@humboldt.edu

Scott Pesch begins his fifth season as the head cross country and track and field coach at Humboldt State.

An HSU alumnus and former Green and Gold distance standout, Pesch has taken the program to new heights under his leadership.

Pesch teaches his student-athletes to balance the busy life of being an NCAA Division II athlete and a student at HSU. His priority is academic success that will help prepare them for life after athletics. He works to build high-character, mature young adults that will give back to their community in the future. In respect to athletic success, Pesch believes in building his program’s depth from the ground up. He has increased his program’s national recognition by qualifying teams and individuals for Nationals, and has coached multiple All-American talents. He works tirelessly to build a program that can compete in one of the nation’s best conferences, the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

In the fall of 2010, his first season with the Jacks, he coached a pair of cross country student-athletes to All-Conference accolades. Pesch coached an All-American and All-Conference selection in Nicolas Arguellas during the spring 2011 season. He also led a team that included two more All-Conference choices and a Conference Champion (Logan Baumgartner).

The 2011 cross country season saw improved results for his squad. Bridget Berg captured All-Conference, All-Region and All-American honors under Pesch’s guidance and Joe Ostini picked up All-Conference and All-Region nods.

Track and field sent two NCAA Div. II qualifiers to Pueblo, Colo., in the spring (Jantzen Oshier and Austin Huff). Seven Jacks also were tabbed All-Conference performers and Oshier was a Conference Champion.

Pesch’s 2012 cross country team made history as it marked the first time in program history both the men’s and women’s squads qualified for NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships. The women placed third overall in the NCAA Regional Meet and finished 15th in the NCAA National Meet. The men’s team ranked fifth overall in the Regional Meet and 16th in the NCAA National Meet. Bridget Berg and Austin Huff carried over their success from the spring season and were named All-Americans. The Jacks finished the season with four All-Conference and three All-Region selections.

Fred Rosser captured a Conference Championship in the men’s 400m hurdles and Oshier was tabbed an All-Conference member during the 2012 track and field season.

The 2013 cross country team was balanced, but had just one All-Region pick in Kori Gilley.

Pesch added another All-American to his already growing list in the 2014 track and field season. Matt Horsfall placed third in the javelin during the NCAA DII National Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich. Rosser finished the season as a NCAA Qualifier for the National Meet and was an All-Conference pick and eventual Conference Champion in the 400m hurdles. Joshua Toney won the Conference Championship in the discus and was also an All-Conference selection. Five total Jacks earned All-Conference nods in 2014.

Academic success has always been a key goal for Pesch’s student-athletes. His men’s and women’s teams have been honored as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams 12 total times in both cross country and track and field.

USATF’s Hightower Bans the Mile in America

Bring Back the Mile calls decision by USATF President “misguided, undemocratic” and asks its supporters to fight the ban and to use hashtag #StopSteph.

By Ian Stewart IV, Associated Press

NEW YORK – (April 1, 2015) – Outgoing USA Track & Field President Stephanie Hightower has banned the Mile from the sport in the United States according to several reliable sources including Track & Field News, Runner’s World, LetsRun.com, RunBlogRun and 3 Wire Sports.

“Per USATF By-Laws, I have the authority as its President to ban any event at any time for the betterment of the sport, and I did so for the Mile because as Louis XIV said: L’etat c’est moi,” Hightower said defending her decision. “Yes, the Mile is still very popular in America, but it is unfair to the other track & field events that receive little if any media coverage and fan interest compared to the Mile and its coveted sub-4 minute standard. Also think of all the children competing in other lesser known non-Mile events which will surely impact their fragile self-esteems if the Mile continues to be contested and disproportionately recognized.”

Later, when asked about implementation of such a nationwide ban, Hightower responded via USATF spokeswoman Jill Geer: “Change can be disruptive and is often hard, and some will be unhappy, but I sincerely believe that elimination of the Mile is for the greater good.”

“With all due respect to Ms. Hightower, we will challenge her misguided decision even if it means going to Congress to change the Amateur Sports Act of 1978 to stop this egregious action,” said Ryan Lamppa, Bring Back the Mile founder. “Put simply, Ms. Hightower needs to immediately rescind this shortsighted, undemocratic decision or we will ask President Obama to issue an Executive Order to forever keep this most American of distances. We also encourage our supporters to join the fight and to use the hashtag #StopSteph. Go Mile!”

Top U.S. Milers including Jenny Simpson, Leo Manzano, Shannon Rowbury and Will Leer and Mile legends Jim Ryun, Francie Larrieu Smith, Steve Scott, Mary Slaney and Alan Webb also expressed shock at Hightower’s decision and vowed solidarity with BBTM to challenge the Mile ban.

Launched in January 2012, Bring Back the Mile is a national campaign to return the Mile to prominence on the American sports and cultural landscape by elevating and celebrating the storied, iconic distance. For more information, go to: www.bringbackthemile.com.

Two-Time Defending Champ Saint Augustine’s Moves to No. 1 in NCAA DII

By Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA
April 7, 2015

NEW ORLEANS – Nearly a month removed from the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, a majority of teams around the country have seen most of their top athletes compete at least once.
As a result, some familiar names have emerged at the top of the National Team Computer Rankings announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) after early-season rankings domination by Western and Southern teams.

The two-time defending outdoor champion Saint Augustine’s men have taken over the No. 1 spot, followed closely by No. 2 Angelo State and defending indoor/cross country champion Adams State at No. 3.
Meanwhile in the women’s rankings, indoor champ No. 1 Central Missouri and No. 2 Azusa Pacific held steady in the top two spots, holding off a strong outdoor debut by No. 4 New Mexico Highlands. Just outside the top five, defending outdoor national champion Lincoln (Mo.) moved up to No. 6 after its first full-fledged weekend of competition.
Former men’s No. 1 Chico State dropped four spots to No. 5.
Unlike the NCAA Division I and III rankings (which include 2014 marks from returning athletes for the first three weeks), Division II only includes marks from the current 2015 season in its rankings formula. In the early section of this outdoor season, the rankings function more as a display of who’s performed the best to date this year and not necessarily who will be contending for the NCAA titles Memorial Day weekend in Allendale, Michigan.

The Saint Augustine’s men were boosted not only by its typical strong sprints corps – led by the top-ranked 4×400, No. 1 400-meter runner Omar Johnson and six more sprints/hurdles/relays entries ranked top-10 nationally – but also from an unexpected nation leader at 800 meters in Immanuel Hutchinson. Whether he can dethrone five-time 800m national champ Drew Windle of Ashland at NCAAs remains to be seen.
There’s still much work to be done, however, for the Falcons to separate themselves from the rest of the country. At 156.78 rankings points (see explanation of rankings here), Saint Augustine’s is only narrowly ahead of No. 2 Angelo State (151.14), No. 3 Adams State (144.23) and No. 4 Texas A&M-Commerce (141.05), and is only separated from No. 7 Texas A&M-Kingsville by just over 27 points.
A Western team that has demonstrated staying power in the rankings is No. 2 Angelo State, which moved up three spots to remain firmly in the hunt with national champions Saint Augustine’s and Adams State. The Rams got five national top-10 performances this past weekend, including No. 1 400-meter hurdler Wala Gime (who is also ranked No. 5 in the short hurdles).
From hurdles to barriers, Adams State moved up to No. 3 as two-time defending steeplechase and cross country champion Tabor Stevens made his 2015 track debut after sitting out the indoor season. At 8:32.50 he’s now the second-fastest man in Division II history.
Stevens and the rest of the Adams State distance crew combined to propel the Grizzlies to No. 3 as Oliver Aitchison took the collegiate lead at 1500 meters and Kevin Batt took the DII lead at 5000 meters. More points may be on the table depending which events each runner decides to contest at NCAAs this May.
Making the biggest splash in the women’s rankings was No. 4 New Mexico Highlands, which earned No. 1 national DII ranks in the long jump with Shanice McPherson and the triple jump with Salcia Slack, as well as in the 4×100 relay.
At the regional level, Shippensburg’s men took over the top spot in the Atlantic Region, as did Grand Valley State’s men and women in the Midwest and Alabama-Huntsville’s men and women in the South.

Planning a Physical Presence in China
Andrew Scott Conning.

==================================================

Andrew Scott Conning, 43, is my son. He ran cross country and track at Berkeley High School from 1987-1989.  He graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University with a B.A. in languages and international affaire in 1994.  He received a M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from UNAM in Mexico City.  He is in his sixth year as a doctoral candidate in Education at Harvard University.

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) (National Autonomous University of Mexico) is a publicresearch university in Mexico City, Mexico that is the largest university in Latin America.[8] UNAM was founded, in its modern form, on 22 September 1910 by Justo Sierra[1][2][3][4] as a liberal alternative to its preceding institution the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico (founded on 21 September 1551 by a royal decree of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and brought to a definitive closure in 1867 by the liberals).

He speaks Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin.

He is the author of Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course.

Kanji (漢字; Japanese pronunciation: [kandʑi]About this sound listen), or kan'ji, are the adopted logographicChinese characters (hànzì)[1] that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with hiragana and katakana. The Japanese term kanji for the Chinese characters literally means "Han characters"[2] and is written using the same characters as the Chinese word hànzì (simplified Chinese: 汉字; traditional Chinese: 漢字).[3]wikipedia

Dave Rodda was enshrined into the LBSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

April 7, 2015
Long Beach, Calif. - Track and Field lost a tremendous leader last Friday with the death of Dave Rodda, who passed away following a heart attack. A pioneer for women's track and field, Rodda's passion for the sport was nearly unmatched. Following his retirement as the Director of Recreation and Community Services in Lakewood, Rodda returned to his Alma Mater of Long Beach State and spent the next 14 years serving as an assistant coach with Beach track and Field. In that time, Rodda helped lead the 49ers to four Big West Championships, and helped coach 11 Big West champions, 43 All-Big West performers, and eight All-Americans. Rodda was inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006, owing to his success not only at LBSU but through national and international competition as well. Rodda coached 12 Olympians and worked as a Team USA assistant coach through two Olympic cycles, as well as serving as the head coach for the 1991 World Championships and 1995 Pan American Games. Following his resignation last year, head coach Andy Sythe had the following to say about Rodda. "There isn't a finer coach out there than Dave Rodda," Sythe said. "His level of expertise is unmatched in this profession and he will be truly missed. It's not only his working knowledge that made him the outstanding coach he is, but it's also his ability to work with and motivate student-athletes that makes him truly special." In 1996, Rodda was distinguished as a Master Coach, the highest recognition in coaching education by USA Track & Field.

Senior Dylan Montagu ( Lick-Wilmerding , San Francisco) won the men's 110 meter high hurdles in 16.77.  His last name reminded me of the film Chariots of Fire.

"Evelyn Aubrey Montague (20 March 1900 – 30 January 1948) was an English athlete and journalist. He ran in the 1924 Paris Olympics, placing sixth in the steeplechase race. Montague is immortalised in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, where he is portrayed by Nicholas Farrell. Contrary to the film, however, he attended Oxford, not Cambridge, and went by the name Evelyn (EEV-lin) rather than Aubrey." Wikipedia

Junior Kara Awakoaiye (Bishop O'Dowd, Oakland) won the  women's 100 meters in 12.47.  Freshman Marnae Glover (Bishop O'Dowd) placed second in 12.76.

The men’s top three remained the same as in week one: No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist and No. 3 Concordia (Ore.) trailed the Warriors. Two new men’s squads joined the top ten this week. No. 7 Southern Oregon jumped sixteen spots, and No. 9 Wiley (Texas) moved up from eleventh in the rankings.
Three men’s teams joined the top twenty-five, including one enormous move. No. 19 Central Methodist (Mo.), No. 20 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), and No. 25 William Penn (Iowa) all climbed into the rankings. LC State moved up a whopping eighty-four slots! The Warriors did so with a plethora of fast distance performances at San Francisco State.
Wayland Baptist surmounted the the women’s rankings with a combination of great distance and sprint performances, with nationally elite marks from the 100 to the 10k.
The rest of the top six stayed the same, but switched in order. The next five teams in the rankings were No. 2 Indiana Tech, No. 3 Concordia (Neb.), No. 4 Oklahoma Baptist, No. 5 British Columbia, and No. 6 British Columbia. Nos. 3-5 each climbed at spot at the expense of No. 6.
Four teams joined the women’s top twenty-five: No. 11 Carroll (Mont.), No. 15 Missouri Baptist, No. 21 Baker (Kan.), and No. 24 Webber International. Mizzou Baptist made by far the biggest move–the Spartans jumped seventy-seven rungs in the rankings.
The NAIA rankings will be released every Wednesday between now and the May 21-23 national meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
