He did it and got a PR, too. Congrats, Kevin!

Cheats demoralise Kenya's clean runners, says Bungei
FORMER 800m Olympic champion Wilfred Bungei has said the doping menace is affecting the performance of Kenya’s clean athletes in the World Marathon Majors. Bungei said the athletes are currently demotivated due to the many questions being asked about doping in Kenya. - See more at: http://www.the-star.co.ke/news/cheats-demoralise-kenyas-clean-runners-says-bungei#sthash.Zo4lRZJu.iaREg2kD.dpuf

Five global champions support IAAF/Nestle Kids Athletics in Sochi
Five global champions support IAAF / Nestlé Kids Athletics in Sochi

The event was hosted by IAAF President Lamine Diack and two 800m running greats, Denmark’s three-time world champion Wilson Kipketer and Russia’s 2004 Olympic champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy, acting in the role of IAAF Ambassadors.
The IAAF / Nestlé Kids’ Athletics event was the ‘must be there’ event of the day in Sochi, attracting as it did the presence of three other distinguished global champions: Gabriela Szabo, Tatyana Lebedeva and Koji Murofushi. Also giving his support to the two-hour demonstration was Svein-Arne Hansen, the newly elected President of European Athletics.
Yet the focus was of course on the main participants, the children. Six teams of kids aged 12 years old drawn from Sochi schools took part in a series of seven fun activities which covered the core skills of athletics: running, jumping and throwing. 12 athletics coaches were on hand to direct the kids through the programme of IAAF / Nestlé Kids’ Athletics, which was organised with the marvellous assistance of IAAF Regional Development Centre, Moscow and its Director Vadim Zelichenok and Gϋnter Lange from the IAAF Development Department.
President Diack, Kipketer and Borzakovskiy begun the afternoon talking to the children about their own experiences as athletes and what had motivated them to take up athletics and continue to pursue a healthy life style long after retirement from competition. They signed autographs and helped to distribute T-Shirts, certificates and colourful IAAF Kids Athletics and IAAF Athletics for a Better World wristbands.
While their fellow champions looked on amused, the competitive natures of the two 800m runners, who incidentally remain the two fastest ever humans over the distance when run indoors, eventually could not be subdued. Unable to resist showing off their abilities in some of the seven events, the afternoon came to a climax with a light-hearted hurdles race. It was a near dead heat with Kipketer, who only arrived in Sochi late last night, the narrow victor.
Created in 2005, and since 2012 partnered by “Nestlé Healthy Kids”, Kids’ Athletics is a worldwide sports development programme with the mission to make athletics the No.1 physical activity in schools.
Nestlé, which is the world’s leading nutrition, health and wellness company with 339,000 employees worldwide, became the main sponsor of Kids’ Athletics in January 2012 agreeing a five-year sponsorship with the IAAF.
The IAAF’s objectives for Kids’ Athletics, which has so far been activated in more than 120 of the IAAF’s 214 national member federations worldwide, are to make athletics the No.1 participation sport in schools, promoting a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and attracting the potential sports stars of tomorrow.

National Athletes of the Week Honor Historically Fast Sprints

By Dennis Young, USTFCCCA
April 21, 2015
NEW ORLEANS—Jamaicans, sprinters, and repeat winners dominated the National Athlete of the Week awards on the most explosive weekend yet of the outdoor season. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the awards on Tuesday.
Two historically great sprinters swept the Division I awards. Vernon Norwood of LSU and Jenna Prandini of Oregon–each competing in their home state–ran the fastest ever times in their respective events by a collegian in the month of April.
Jamaican runners Omar Johnson of Saint Augustine’s (Division II men), Adriana Wright of Lehman (DIII women), and Chrisann Gordon of South Plains (NJCAA DI women) were three of the ten winners; the honor was the second straight for Gordon and her third award of 2015.
Joining Gordon as a repeat winner was Central Missouri hammer thrower Heavin Warner, who won back in January. The DII woman was our only national record breaker this week.
The other four winners: Bijan Mazaheri of Williams (DIII men), Deron Gordon of Barton (NJCAA DI men), Jack Flood of SUNY Delhi (NJCAA DIII men) and Stephanie Boucher of Mohawk Valley (NJCAA DIII women).
Click each of the student-athletes’ names above or keep scrolling below to read about the exploits that made all ten worthy.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to ten (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and the two NJCAA divisions) collegiate track & field athletes.
Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.
DIVISION I MEN – Vernon Norwood, LSU
Senior | Morgan City, LouisianaCompeting on his home track–and in his first 400 since winning an indoor national championship in March–Norwood won his race at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in 44.44 seconds. That makes him the ninth-fastest collegiate in-season performer ever. It was a winning weekend for Norwood, as he also ran legs on LSU’s winning 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays.
Despite Norwood’s sterling credentials, this marks the first time that he’s won an outdoor individual event in an LSU uniform. The time is the fastest ever by a collegian in April.
Honorable mentions: Andre De Grasse, USC and Michael Lihrman, Wisconsin
DIVISION I WOMEN – Jenna Prandini, Oregon
RS Junior | Clovis, CaliforniaPrandini turned in a blazing fast wind-legal sprint double at Mt. SAC on Saturday. She won the 100 (10.92 seconds) and 200 (22.42) in just two hours. Her 200 was a career best and collegiate leader by a huge margin, but it was her 100 that rocked the sprint scene. Only one woman has ever run faster during the collegiate season–and Dawn Sowell did that at altitude–and only two women have run faster any time of the year. Prandini’s time is tied for the 2015 world lead, and is a full tenth of a second faster than any other collegian has gone this year.
Honorable mention: Dior Hall, USC and Raven Saunders, Southern Illinois
DIVISION II MEN – Omar Johnson, Saint Augustine’s
Junior | JamaicaJohnson, helping his team to its eighteenth straight conference title, won the 400 in 45.78 seconds, took fourth in the 200, and ran a leg on the winning 4×400. That 400 time is ninth among all collegians this year, regardless of division. It was a huge performance from Johnson: per TFRRS, he hadn’t broken 47.00 in a St. Aug’s uniform until the Florida Relays two weeks ago. The 2015 indoor 400 runner-up now has the Division II national lead by three-quarters of a second.
Honorable mention: Jeron Robinson, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Sean Wells, Grand Valley State
DIVISION II WOMEN – Heavin Warner, Central Missouri
Junior | St. Joseph, MissouriOne of the most appropriately named athletes in the NCAA heaved the ball and chain to break the Division II national record in the hammer in her home cage. Heavin Warner (though it is pronounced "Heaven" and not "heavin’") won the Mule Relays with a throw of 67.24 meters (220-7), which is third among all collegians this year and only two feet off of the Division I national lead. She also won the discus and shot put this weekend; Warner is the DII national leader in the discus and No. 6 on the descending order in the shot put.
She broke the thirteen-year-old DII hammer record by nearly three meters.
Honorable mention: Quanera Hayes, Livingstone and Euphemia Edem, Tarleton State
DIVISION III MEN – Bijan Mazaheri, Williams
Junior | Wellesley, MassachusettsMazaheri slashed a minute from his 10k PR and took third in a field over nearly all Division I athletes at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational. His time of 29:39.27 resides just outside of the DIII top ten all-time list, is a Williams school record, leads DIII this year by over thirty seconds, and makes him the second fastest 10k man in NESCAC history. Mazaheri, a junior two-time All-American, closed his 10k in 4:37 on Friday night.
Honorable mention: Roger Steen, UW-Eau Claire and Jamie Ruginski, Southern Maine
DIVISION III WOMEN – Adriana Wright, Lehman
Sophomore | St. Elizabeth, JamaicaWright tore up the Division III record books all winter, and has resumed her historic assault on the all-time lists this spring. After breaking DIII national records in the 60 hurdles and 200 indoors, she put the 100 hurdles national record on notice this weekend. She won the CTC championship in 13.75 seconds into a 2.0 mps headwind, which is No. 4 on the DIII all-time list and the No. 2 wind-legal performance ever. Wright also won the 100 in 11.72 seconds (tied for No. 10 in DIII history), giving Lehman all 20 of their points at the CTC meet.
Honorable mention: Allie Hadley, Cal Lutheran and Jecel Klotz, UW-Oshkosh
NJCAA MEN – Deron Gordon, Barton
Freshman | North Lauderdale, FloridaGordon eked out a win in the 400 hurdles at Oklahoma’s John Jacobs Invitational, beating Wichita State’s Jonathan Duval by 0.01 seconds. His time of 50.90 seconds is the NJCAA leader and in the top 25 among all collegians.
Honorable mention: Albert Meier, Butler
NJCAA WOMEN – Chrisann Gordon, South Plains
Sophomore | Cave Valley, JamaicaTalk about versatility. A week after winning the NAOW for her performance in the 800, Gordon won the 200 at UTEP in 23.28 seconds. That wind-legal time is the NJCAA leader and is in the top 20 on the all-college list. She’s the NJCAA indoor national champion in the 800, 600, and DMR, and the outdoor national leader in the 800 and 400 and No. 2 in the 200.
Honorable mention: Micayla Collins, New Mexico
NJCAA DIVISION III MEN – Jack Flood, SUNY Delhi
Freshman | Blue Point, New YorkFlood won the decathlon at the Cortland Classic with 6339 points, which is the best NJCAA DIII score of the year. En route to that total, his performances in the 100 hurdles (No. 2 on the descending order list) and pole vault (No. 8) marked him as a major scorer on the NJCAA DIII level.
NJCAA DIVISION III WOMEN – Stephanie Boucher, Mohawk Valley
Sophomore | New Hartford, New YorkBoucher already had the NJCAA DIII national lead in the 1500 and 800; after a great double at the Cortland Classic, she’s now one of the most dominant athletes in her event anywhere in the college ranks. Her winning 1500 time of 4:42.20 is a division leader by 17 seconds, and her winning 800 time of 2:12.69 is a division leader by 9.72 seconds.

ESPN Announces Historic Live Television Coverage Schedule for NCAA DI Outdoor Championships

By Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA
April 23, 2015
Fans of collegiate track & field have long clamored for national, primetime television exposure – particularly for the sport’s crown jewel event, the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The wait is over: On June 10-13 from Eugene, Oregon, the Championships – featuring star-studded teams and world-class athletes – will take center stage on ESPN, the Worldwide Leader in Sports.
The Championships’ first-ever ESPN and ESPN2 primetime broadcasts on Friday and Saturday were announced as part of network’s 12-hour live television programming schedule for all four days of the meet.
Additionally, for the first time all field events and combined events (decathlon and heptathlon) throughout the four days will be covered live online via ESPN3.
View the full ESPN release here.
The men’s finals on Friday will be broadcast live on ESPN, followed the next day by the women’s finals on ESPN2. Wednesday’s and Thursday’s competition will be carried live on ESPNU.
Combining both the television and online broadcasts, more than 35 hours of live NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships coverage is scheduled to air. Past broadcasts included only 11 total hours of live coverage.
Broadcast times are listed in the graphic below, which can be enlarged by clicking it.
“There’s no better showcase for collegiate track & field than to be featured in primetime on ESPN and ESPN2,” USTFCCCA CEO Sam Seemes said. “Our many fans will have their easiest access ever to what is year-in and year-out the premier track & field meet in the United States, and year-in and year-out one of the best meets in the world.
“For the many future fans of the sport we’ll be reaching in homes, restaurants and sports bars, and elsewhere around the country, this will be their first exposure to the incredible drama of our team and individual competitions. From witnessing the ‘see-it-to-believe-it’ feats of speed, endurance, strength and flight, to cheering for the familiar colors of their schools – there will be something for everyone who tunes in.”
In years past, only running events on the final two days of competition had been televised on ESPNU, with supplementary coverage – also primarily of the running events – streamed online via ESPN3.
Opening the door for ESPN’s expanded coverage of the NCAA Outdoor Championships was the announcement in February of the new schedule format for this year’s and next year’s Championships.
Under this format, the men’s and women’s Championships will be contested on alternating days – allowing for a more streamlined showcase of both genders’ top teams and athletes as they compete for national titles.
“Coaches and administrators from schools around the country came together and made the bold decision to change how we contest our championships,” Seemes said, “And within the same year we are already reaping the benefits of that change. While our sport is rooted in its many traditions, this is just one prime example that openness to change is key to allowing our sport to truly grow and flourish.”
What They’re Saying
Track & Field coaches from around the country react to ESPN’s announcement to carry all four days of the 2015 NCAA Championships on live television, including primetime slots on ESPN and ESPN2."It’s a phenomenal impact for our sport as we continue to move forward and make our sport more fan accessible and fan-friendly. I think this is just a great step forward to produce much more attention for us and to be really fan friendly at the same time."
"Separating the national championships, yet retaining them on the same weekend, is just a brilliant idea. It certainly allows the two genders’ championships to be followed more easily. As we know, the American public loves to have a team to cheer for, and loves to follow their school, and love to follow how their school is doing – and this format allows us to do that better. With the television exposure, you really find a way that people are going to be able to see us live and see us first-hand, and it’s a great way to really bounce the exposure into many, many more people’s homes and the living rooms of young people who can see it, be inspired and someday be a part of it themselves."
Beth Alford-Sullivan, Tennessee – Director of Track & Field/Cross Country
President, U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
"I think, number one, when you really explore the NCAA Championships in various other sports, I think the success of those sports is often times directly related to the product that’s put on television. So I think television is, obviously, a very good thing for the growth of our sport, especially when you consider the large number of high school participants, and getting them exposed to the Division I level of championship track & field will not only be an inspiration to them, but also allow them to set goals in track & field to achieve big things."
"Having had the experience of having both teams at one time in the championship hunt on the final day, what I can tell you is that often times in the past that the unfolding of the team races and how things are moving forward for each gender was a difficult story to tell when you’re going from one gender to the other and back again as the meet continued on that final day. I feel that this is going to give tremendous exposure to the men’s teams and the women’s team championships because people will be trying to follow along on those particular days and watch it play out on live television. I don’t think that we’ve ever really experienced that before, so certainly I think that – along with some human interest stories that go along with that – is going to create a very good package for track & field fans who are very knowledgeable about our sport, but I think also it is going to expose a lot of people who are just the everyday fan who is not as familiar with it to better understand what a collegiate track & field championship meet is all about."
Dennis Shaver, LSU – Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
President, USTFCCCA Division I Track & Field Executive Committee
"I think, from our point of view as coaches and student-athletes, it gives us this incredible opportunity to showcase the very best of NCAA track and field. We’re showcasing our athletes on live TV, and anytime we get that opportunity, that’s fantastic. To be on ESPN and ESPN2 both final days on Friday and Saturday is fantastic. Our student-athletes are going to get excited about that – we all know that the kids get excited about being on TV – but from the fans’ perspective and the marketing perspective, it’s a great opportunity for us to showcase our athletes and showcase our university."
Mick Byrne, Wisconsin – Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
"Anytime you can be on the flagship network of ESPN is unbelievable. Just hearing that gets me very excited as a track & field coach because it’s the first time we’ve had that, that everything’s been live. It’s tremendous exposure for our student-athletes, it’s tremendous exposure for our university, and – no pun intended – it’s a big jump from what it’s been. That’s a plus all the way around. It’s a huge win for our sport."
"It makes our sport a lot more understandable and I think that’s a plus for the future. We’ve got to start thinking as a sport more forward as opposed to backward. We need to start doing things that increase exposure for our fanbase and make it so it’s more ‘normal'; track & field is very confusing. I think this will go a long way in doing that."
Bryan Fetzer, Virginia – Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
"The first word that comes out of my mouth is ‘groundbreaking’, the fact that it’s something that’s never been done for us. For our meet to be live all four days and in primetime on Friday and Saturday is just an incredible accomplishment by the work the Coaches Association has done and, obviously, the commitment ESPN has to our sport is an unbelievable thing."
"That’s been one of the challenges that people have said about following track & field is that they don’t really know what’s going on [in the team race]. I think the new format definitely allows them to follow the meet – the score will change and they’ll be able to follow it after every event. Again, it gives more of the team concept and the team flavor to track & field, and I think that’s important."
Mike Holloway, Florida – Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
"It’s huge for the sport of track & field for the simple fact that we are in a media age. If we are able to show people around the country our product, then hopefully more people will be willing to come out and watch the meets – or even from the standpoint, in the future, of being able to have more meets online or on live television so people can tune in. We do have a viable sport and we want people to be able to watch it. We’re one of the most participated-in sports in the country and in the world, for that m
atter, so we want to continue to be in the forefront. So many other sports these days are reaping the benefits of being able to be seen by so many, whereas we continue to fall behind in certain areas because we aren’t viewed the same way. And it’s one of the purest sports there is: you line up and you beat people, you throw farther, and you jump farther. People understand that, but you still have to put it in front of people, so I think this is great."
"We’re talking about being in a media age. When most people sit down and watch things on TV, it’s right there, it’s short and quick, and everything is fed right to you. If you go to a track meet and you’re there for eight hours, you lose your crowd. That’s just the reality of it. I love track& field, but the meets can be a bit long. Now we’re talking about the national championship – the absolute best people you have – being showcased, and you want to keep your attention span there."
Erik Jenkins, Western Kentucky – Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
"I’m really excited about it, and I think that it’s going to be great for the exposure we’ll get from being on live TV so much, and also having the availability to watch more events on ESPN3. I think it’s exciting for the sport, I think it’s going to be great for the student-athletes to be able to have parents and family and people who can’t be there be able to watch them and to see them, and I think it’s exciting for the general public to know that the sport is alive and doing well."
"Just like with any of the other sports, you get to watch the event from the beginning to the conclusion, and you get to see which team is winning and where people are at throughout the game or whatever it is they are watching. Having the complete story from start to finish – here’s the women’s championship and here’s how the teams are faring throughout – is going to make it more exciting to be able to watch a story from start to finish and to know what’s going on."
Connie Price-Smith, Southern Illinois – Head Coach of Track & Field
"Having wall-to-wall coverage – particularly on both Friday and Saturday – is obviously a great development, because it will be showcasing the top athletes we have in the NCAA to a much wider audience than in the past. By having the full coverage of those days allows the general public to see the meet develop – the team battle, particularly – through the day, and I think that is a great thing. The great thing about our sport is the team battle that goes on in that meet, and to be able to watch it develop in a way we haven’t been able to in previous years is very exciting."
"Those of us who are in track & field know how exciting the meets are. I think for the rest of the public, it’s gotten away from us, honestly, in some ways due to the length of some of the track, and also due to the fact that there’s been no standardization for what events were being shown by the ESPN telecast. Now, every event is going to be accessible, and being able to watch something from beginning to end and watch it develop is going to be a much more palatable product for the general public to watch."
David Shoehalter, Yale – Mark T. Young Director of Cross Country and Track & Field

by Keith Conning
I received my secondary teaching credential at what is now Cal State University East Bay in 1967-68. My first student teaching assignment was in American History at Irvington High School in Fremont in the fall semester of 1967. I lived in Berkeley at the time. I was driving 80 miles a day up and down I-880, the Admiral Chester Nimitz Freeway. I asked to be transferred to Castlemont High School in East Oakland, an almost all black school. There had been a student riot there in 1966. That was the farthest north that Hayward State placed their student teachers. I coached cross country and track with Nick Garedakis.
