Fernando Cabada Jr. (born April 22, 1982) is an Mexican American distance runner. He first established himself in the national running scene while in high school when he was ranked among the ten fastest high school boys in the 3200 meters in the United States. Having developed a reputation as an elite prospect, he accepted a scholarship from University of Arkansas, but became disenfranchised with school and attended a total of four different colleges before quitting running altogether and pursuing manual labor jobs in the early 2000s. Cabada then returned to competitive running with Virginia Intermont College coach Scott Simmons, who helped Cabada prepare for his 2006 marathon debut in Fukuoka, Japan, which he ran in 2:12:27.[2] Since then, Cabada established himself primarily as a marathoner.

Running career[edit]

High school[edit]

Cabada attended and ran with Buchanan High School of Clovis, California until he graduated in 2000. At Buchanan, Cabada ran cross country and track and established himself as one of the most formidable high school distance runners in the state of California. In cross country, he recorded 15:42 in the 5K as a junior at the 1998 CIF Cross Country Championships.[3] He recorded a personal best 3200-meter time of 8:59.02 in his junior year at the Golden West track meet on June 11, 1999, after which he was ranked seventh in the high school boys' 3200 meters in the entire United States.[4] In his final outdoor track season as a high school senior, he recorded a personal best time of 4:17.28 in the 1600 meters.[4]

Collegiate[edit]

Upon finishing high school, Cabada took up an offer from Arkansas to attend school with an athletic scholarship. At the time, the Arkansas Razorbacks' prestigious cross country and track programs were headed by experienced coach John McDonnell.[5] Cabada quickly grew disenfranchised with the pressures at Arkansas and returned to his hometown to attend Fresno State. At Fresno, the cross country and track programs folded due to financial reasons, and Cabada attempted to walk-on at Arkansas, this time without a scholarship. Eventually he dropped running and, in 2003, dropped school altogether to work as a tile setter for $8 an hour.[6] While working various labor jobs, Cabada allegedly applied to Minot State University after contacting their coach, Scott Simmons, on the internet. Simmons, however, moved to Virginia Intermont and Cabada left Fresno to follow him. The move to Virginia ultimately saved Cabada's running career; at Virginia Intermont College , he won 7 NAIA titles.

International[edit]

At the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships he finished 72nd.[7] In the following year, Cabada finished 50th at the 2007 World Championships in the marathon.[8] In 2008, Cabada won the 2008 Twin Cities Marathon.[9]
At the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, Cabada finished 46th.[10]

Deena Michelle Kastor (born Deena Michelle Drossin on February 14, 1973) is an American long-distance runner. She holds American records in the marathon, half-marathon, and numerous road distances. She won the bronze medal in the women's marathon at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. She is also an eight-time national champion in cross country.

Early and personal life[edit]

Kastor was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, and is Jewish.[1][2][3][4] She is an alumna of Agoura High School located in Agoura Hills, California. She ran collegiately for the University of Arkansas.
She is married to Andrew Kastor. In August 2010, they announced that she was three months pregnant with their first child, Piper. As a result, she announced she would not be competing in the upcoming New York City Marathon. Her daughter was born in February 2011.[5]

Career highlights[edit]

In high school, Kastor won three California state cross country titles[6] and two CIF California State Meet titles at 3200 meters while running for Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, California.[7] She also competed in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships all four years of her prep career, and competed in both the North American Youth Maccabi Games and the Pan-American Maccabiah while in high school.[2]
At the University of Arkansas she was a four-time SEC champion and an eight-time All-American. Post-collegiately, Kastor ran under coaches Joe Vigil and Terrence Mahon (currently head of the Mammoth Lakes, California training group).
Kastor has earned two silver medals (2002 Dublin, long race; 2003 Lausanne, long race) in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
She holds U.S. records in the following events:
  • Women's marathon (set when winning the 2006 Flora London Marathon with a time of 2:19:36)
  • Women's half marathon (set at the 2006 Berlin Half Marathon with a time of 1:07:34)

Kastor formerly held the following record:
  • Women's 10,000 metres (set at Stanford in 2002 with a time of 30:50.32)
In recent years, Kastor has shifted her focus toward the marathon distance. After winning the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Marathon, she won the 2005 Chicago Marathon. In 2006, she won the London Marathon, setting an American record. She placed sixth at the 2006 New York City Marathon and fifth at the 2007 Boston Marathon. Kastor is a featured subject in the 2007 marathon documentary Spirit of the Marathon, which follows her victory at the 2005 Chicago Marathon.[9]

2008[edit]

In April 2008, Kastor won the U.S. women's Olympic marathon trials in Boston, Massachusetts. She finished with an unofficial time of 2:29:35, after overtaking competitor Magdalena Lewy Boulet in mile 23. Kastor ran most of the race from behind, while Lewy Boulet built a commanding lead very early on, running alone for most of the marathon. With some 10 miles (16 km) to go, Kastor made a move to catch up to Lewy Boulet, stringing out the field. Lewy Boulet took second place in 2:30:19.
In August 2008, Kastor pulled out of the women's marathon at the Beijing Olympics with a foot injury. At about the 5-kilometer (3.1 mi) mark, she dropped to one knee, holding her right foot. She attempted to rise, but dropped back down again and was forced to withdraw from the race.[10]

2010[edit]

On March 21, 2010, Kastor competed in the first spring running of the NYC Half-Marathon. After running the majority of the race in first, on her way to breaking the course record, she dropped to second place to finish behind Great Britain's Mara Yamauchi.[11][12]
It was announced in August 2010 that Kastor and her husband were expecting their first child, Piper Bloom, in March 2011.[13] It was also announced that Deena would be making her return to racing at the New York Mini 10K.

2012[edit]

In January 2012, Deena ran 2:30:40 to place 6th at the Olympic Squad Houston Olympic Trials.[14][15]

2013[edit]

In January 2013, Kastor announced she will be running in the 2013 Los Angeles Marathon, to be held on March 17, 2013 [16] where she finished third in 2:32:39.[17]
On August 10, 2013, Kastor placed 9th at the World Championship Marathon in Moscow with a time of 2:36. She stated that it may have been her last high-level marathon.

2014[edit]

In April 2014, the 41-year-old Kastor won the 2014 More|Fitness Half-Marathon in New York’s Central Park in a U.S. masters record of 1:11:38. [18]
On September 21, 2014, she set the world record in the Women’s Masters division for the half-marathon, at 1:09:39, while running in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half-Marathon in Philadelphia.[19]

2015[edit]

In October 2015, she broke the U.S. Women's Masters marathon record by almost a minute at the Chicago Marathon, running 2:27:47.[20]

October 12, 2015

NEW ORLEANS– This past weekend might have been the calm before the storm ahead of a busy weekend of cross country, but that didn’t stop a number of athletes from turning in strong performances. And for that reason, we honor this week’s National Athletes of the Week in Division I, Division II, Division III and NJCAA.
This week’s recipients are UMass Lowell’s Robert Allen (Division I men), Boston College’s Laura Hottenrott (Division I women), New Mexico Highlands’ Collins Kirui (Division II men), Lewis’ Amanda Farrough (Division II women), Amherst’s Mohamed Hussein (Division III men), Middlebury’s Abigail Nadler (Division III women), Iowa Western’s Sylvester Barus (NJCAA Division I men), Barton County’s Lydia Mato (NJCAA Division I women), Mohawk Valley’s Zakaria Djouma (NJCAA Division III men) and Harper College’s Ali Gutt (NJCAA Division III women).
Find out more about each of these runners by clicking their names or scrolling below.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to six collegiate cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions).
Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.
NCAA Division I Men – Robert Allen, UMass Lowell
Senior / Providence, Rhode Island
With only a little over a month left in his collegiate running career, Robert Allen is making the most of it. The senior took down the weekend’s toughest field at the NEICAAA New England Championships, covering the 8K course in 24:23.7 to win by six seconds to become the first UMass Lowell runner to win the title.
With Pre-Nationals looming this coming weekend, Allen and his Riverhawks squad ran a controlled effort for the first two-thirds of the race before opening up in the closing stages of the race. He pulled away from the field, including DIII National Athlete of the Week Mohamed Hussein of Amherst, on the final loop and was the only runner in sight on the final straightaway.
Pre-Nationals are next for Allen and UMass Lowell this Saturday. Allen was eighth in his race at Pre-Nats a year ago.
NCAA Division I Women – Laura Hottenrott, Boston College
Senior / Kassel, Germany
For the second time this season, Boston College senior Laura Hottenrott found herself on the top spot of the podium following a strong race.
Nearly one month ago, Hottenrott won the UMass Minuteman Invitational. This time, Hottenrott outran the competition at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Cross Country Championships held at Boston’s Franklin Park.
Hottenrott beat teammate Isabelle Kennedy to the line by two seconds to finish first out of the 263-runner field. Hottenrott covered the 5K course in 17:39.1
Next up for Hottenrott and her Boston College teammates will be the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday in Madison, Wisconsin.
NCAA Division II Men – Collins Kirui, New Mexico Highlands
Freshman | Iten, Kenya
Collins Kirui continues to establish himself as a national contender at the NCAA Division II level, notching his third win of the year this weekend at the Fort Hays Tiger Open. Against a field that included runners from a half-dozen teams ranked in the latest National Coaches’ Polls, Kirui covered the 8K course in 23:40.7 to topple former National Athlete of the Week Derrick Williams of CSU-Pueblo by 24 seconds.
Next up for Kirui and NMHU is the RMAC Championship on October 24.
NCAA Division II Women – Amanda Farrough, Lewis
Junior | South Bend, Indiana
Quickly establishing herself as one of the women to beat in NCAA DII cross country in 2015 is Amanda Farrough. In three meets this season, Farrough has finished no worse than runner-up – to Anna Rohrer of Notre Dame, no less – and has notched two victories, including a decisive win at the Lewis Conference Crossover Meet this weekend. She covered the 6K course in 21:05.21 to topple No. 3 Grand Valley State’s Gina Patterson by 13 seconds.
Coming up next for Farrough and her Flyers is the GLVC Championship meet on October 24.
NCAA Division III Men – Mohamed Hussein, Amherst
Sophomore / Hargeisa, Somolialand
It doesn’t matter the competition: Amherst sophomore Mohamed Hussein will shine.
This past weekend, Hussein stepped to the starting line against 252 other runners in the men’s varsity race at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Cross Country Championships held at Boston’s Franklin Park.
In a race loaded with runners from all collegiate levels, Hussein finished runner-up in 24:29. Hussein beat the next best DIII runner by 17 seconds.
Through three meets this season, Hussein has finished first twice and second once. This is Hussein’s third National Athlete of the Week honor of the season.
Hussein and the Lord Jeffs return to action this weekend when they host the Little III Championship.
NCAA Division III Women – Abigail Nadler, Middlebury
Freshman / Chicago, Illinios
Freshmen aren’t backing down in cross country this season.
That goes for Division I, Division II and certainly Division III. In the latter, Middlebury College freshman Abigail Nadler proved that point well.
Nadler ran well at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Cross Country Invitational this past weekend. She finished fifth out of 263 runners in a time of 17:51.2 over the 5K course at Franklin Park in Boston.
Nadler was the top-finishing runner from DIII. The next runner from her division crossed the finish line 14 seconds behind her.
Middlebury is back in action on Saturday at the University of Albany Invitational.
NJCAA Division I Men – Sylvester Barus, Iowa Western CC
Sophomore / Eldoret, Kenya
When you’re not going to be racing for a while, you might as well take advantage of every opportunity you get. Iowa Western’s Sylvester Barus did exactly that.
There was no competition for Barus at the Fort Hays State Open this past weekend as he won the men’s black race by 51 seconds. Barus covered the 8K course in 24:04.8.
Barus and his teammates won’t race again for three weeks. That’s when the Reivers take on all comers at the NJCAA Region IX Championships in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
NJCAA Division I Women – Lydia Mato, Barton CC
Sophomore / Accra, Ghana
Once the gun went off for the women’s black race at the Fort Hays State Open this past weekend, the field could have sat back and watched Barton Community College’s Lydia Mato run. It would have offered Mato just as much competition.
Mato destroyed the field, completing the 5K course in 17:44.5. She won the race by more than one minute.
Barton County won’t race again until Oct. 31 when they travel to the NJCAA Region VI Championships in Overland Park, Kansas.
NJCAA Division III Men – Zakaria Djouma, Mohawk Valley CC
Freshman | Utica, New York
Zakaria Djouma continues his reign atop NJCAA Division III cross country with his fifth victory of the 2015 season en route to his fourth National Athlete of the Week plaudit. His latest conquest came at the Hamilton College Invitational, in which he ran 25:12.6 over eight kilometers for a 21 second victory.
He puts his undefeated streak on the line again on October 24 at the NJCAA Regional Championships.
NJCAA Division III Women – Ali Gutt, Harper College
Freshman | Schaumburg, Illinois
Ali Gutt, one of NJCAA Division III’s top runners all season long in 2015, continued to build that reputation this past weekend at the Benedictine Eagle Invitational. In a mostly NCAA Division III field, Gutt finished sixth overall in 23:09.8 on the 6K course among a field of 126 runners.
Gutt and the Hawks are back in action this upcoming weekend at the Bradley Classic.

HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION NINETEENTH ANNUAL TRACK AND FIELD RECORD BOOK

X This marks the nineteenth year that Helms Athletic Foundation has prepared

and issued its Southern California High School Track and Field record book

in the interest of high school athletics. This edition lists outstanding

performances and records established by Southern California's high school track

and field athletes during the 1955 season. Five hundred record booklets are

prepared and distributed by the Helms Athletic Foundation each season.

The facts and records listed in this booklet have been gathered from sources

believed to be reliable. Information has been provided by high school coaches and

student newspaper sports editors, as well as from Southern California newspapers.

This Southern California Prep School Track and Field record book, as are all

athletic record books of similar nature, was prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation,

under the supervision of W.R. Bill Schroeder, Managing Director. It is distributed

to schools, press, radio, television, athletic coaches and officials, without

charge.

Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices in Helms Hall, Los Angeles, California,

is sponsored by Paul H. Helms. The Foundation was established in 1936. One of the

purposes of Helms Athletic Foundation is that of recording achievements of athletes

and athletic teams in all sports and all divisions.

This nineteenth annual track and field record book contains best marks of

Los Angeles City and C.I.F. Track and Field athletes over the past years, past

C.I.F. and City championship teams and present City, State and National Interscholastic

Track and Field records.

There is also listed the Track and Field athletes of the year, for both

Los Angeles City and C.I.F., selections which have been made by All-Southern

California Board of Athletics since 1937. These athletes have their names

engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy, which is lodged in Helms Hall.

•~CHARLES DUMAS AND JESSE NEWMAN SELECTED

CIF AND CITY TRACK ATHLETES OF YEAR, 1955

X The Helms All-Southern California Board of Athletics selected a pair of

record breakers as 1955 Athletes of the Year in Track and Field. Charles

Dumas, Centennial High School, and Jesse Newman, Jefferson High School,

were the boys named for honors. Dumas was named the top performer from among all

Southern California C.I.F. high schools, while Jesse Newman was picked from the

ranks of Los Angeles City high schools.

Charles Dumas, Centennial High School senior, led an assault on the high

jump event all through the 1955 season. Dumas led his talented teammates to victories

in just about every invitational meet run in Southern California, posting

outstanding marks in his event. Centennial won the Bay League title, as well as

invitational meets at Chaffey, Santa Barbara and Inglewood, with Charles Dumas

breaking some sort of record every time out. He posted new C.I.F. marks in the

Southern Section championships (6' 8 7/8") and the California State Meet (6« 9 3/8")

and established a new all-time interscholastic best of 6' 10 1/4" at the SPAAU Meet,

Jesse Newman, Jefferson High School senior, broke a Los Angeles City

High School record which has been in the books since 1935. Newman, who helped

lead Jefferson High School to the Southern League title and second place in the

Los Angeles City championships, ran the mile in 4:23.9 fco gain the City title and

erase Louie Zamperini's mark of 4:26.3, made in 1935. Newman also clocked an

unofficial time of 4:22.0 in the California State Meet, running third to Newport

Harbor's Tod White, who set a new mark of 4:20.0.

Jesse Newman was coached by Estel Johnson, perennial top man in the

Southern League, while Charles Dumas received his instruction from Bill Gill, who

tutored his Apaches to victories in the C.I.F. and State meets.

Two New No. 1s Emerge in Latest DII Regional Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – The final significant weekend of head-to-head NCAA Division II cross country action before conference championships two weekends from now fittingly resulted in some significant shifting in the Regional Rankings announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Regional Rankings Summary PDF | Division II XC Rankings Central
Week-by-Week All-Time Regional Rankings
QUICK LINKS: Men’s Regions | Women’s Regions
Two new No. 1 teams emerged in the South Region for each gender, while rankings in the South, East, Atlantic, and Central regions were jumbled up from a week ago. The time to live up to these rankings is fast approaching as Regional Championships will be held around the country on November 7.
The men of Lee (Tenn.) reclaimed their spot atop the South Region from Saint Leo after a third-place finish among non-Division I schools at the Queens Royals XC Challenge. Nova Southeastern jumped up two spots into the all-important third spot in the three-bid South Region.
Only three teams from the men’s South Region will advance to the NCAA Championships on November 21 in Joplin, Missouri. Each region is allotted a certain number of qualifiers based on its teams’ performances at last year’s NCAA Championships.
Fret not, Saint Leo fans, as your Lions ascended to No. 1 in the women’s South Region. The Saint Leo women toppled formerly No. 1 Tampa– winner of the last eight South Region titles – 83-89 at the 5K Disney Classic Presented by New Balance. The Spartans fell to No. 2 in the region.
The South may have been the only region with changes at the very top, but numerous other regions saw new teams jockey into qualifying position based on the weekend’s results.
In the men’s East Region, only top-ranked Stonehill remained steady while all nine teams beneath it shuffled around. American International moved back to No. 2 in the three-bid region, displacing No. 3 Roberts Wesleyan and No. 4 Franklin Pierce.
The three-bid women’s Atlantic saw Shippensburg move to No. 2 behind Bloomsburg, pushing down Edinboro and Slippery Rock.
A five-spot drop to No. 9 by MSU Moorhead in the five-bid women’s Central Region opened the door for No. 4 Harding to move up one spot and No. 5 Missouri Southern to join the qualifying picture with a two-position increase.
Many teams took advantage of this final weekend of significant regular-season competition to move into the regional rankings.
New to the men’s charts were: Minnesota Duluth [Central], Michigan Tech [Midwest], North Alabama [South], and Young Harris and Flagler [Southeast].
Joining the women’s rankings were: Philadelphia [East], Nova Southeastern [South], Augusta, Limestone and Mount Olive [Southeast], and Cal State San Marcos [West].
NCAA Division II Regional Championships will be held around the country on Saturday, November 7 with the NCAA Championships happening two weeks later in Joplin, Missouri, on November 21..
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams’ strength with current season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
