Barber joins six-metre club in Reno

World pole vault champion Shawn Barber continued his strong start to the season by setting a lifetime best of 6.00m – the best height by a Canadian under any conditions – at the Pole Vault Summit in Reno on Friday (15).
The 21-year-old opened his season with a 5.88m vault in Texas on 2 January and followed that with a 5.70m clearance in Akron one week later.
In Reno, Barber cleared all of his heights up to and including 5.83m on his first attempts. At that point, only Japan’s Seito Yamamoto was left in the competition. Yamamoto had cleared 5.77m to add six centimetres to his own national indoor record, but he was unable to match Barber at 5.83m and so exited the competition.
Barber then moved the bar up to 5.94m. He needed all three attempts, but finally got over it to break his own Canadian record. He hadn’t quite finished, though.
The bar was raised to 6.00m and Barber sailed over on his first attempt to establish another national record. He also added eight centimetres to the meeting record and became just the ninth man to clear that barrier indoors. His 6.00m clearance is also the best ever indoor mark by an under-23 athlete.
Barber's previous indoor best of 5.92m was set at last year's IAAF Diamond League meeting in Zurich, where the pole vault was held indoors in the city's train station. His outdoor PB is 5.93m, set at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in London.
US champion Sam Kendricks was third with 5.65m, while world decathlon champion Ashton Eaton opened his season with a 5.00m vault.
Barber will travel to Europe in the next few days to face world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie in Rouen on 23 January.
While Barber dominated the men’s event, the women’s contest was a lot closer.
After the bar had passed 4.60m, just three women were left in the competition: NCAA champion Sandi Morris, European silver medallist Ekaterini Stefanidi and two-time world indoor finalist Mary Saxer.
All three successfully negotiated that height and the next, 4.66m. The final placings were only decided at 4.71m.
Morris was the first to clear it, giving her the victory with an indoor PB. Stefanidi and Saxer also got over it to finish second and third respectively, the latter equalling her outright lifetime best.

Ed Jacoby Invitational Results - Day 1 Get Acrobat Reader
NAMPA, Idaho – Camden Stoddard won the pole vault title and the women’s distance medley relay team of Alexis Fuller, Jessica Bottelberghe, Kyra Lopez and Brenna Peloquin picked up the victory in day one of the Ed Jacoby Invitational at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho. The day was occupied by primarily the heptathlon and pentathlon, but there still were several Boise State athletes in action.
Stoddard cleared 15-3 (4.65m) in his final vault, good for a personal best in indoors. Fellow Bronco Adam Garske was right behind him in second place, recording a 14-11 (4.55m). The women’s DMR team recorded a 12:11.93, a little less than three seconds ahead of Utah State (12:14.90). The other Boise State DMR team of Ali Deitsch, Zanae Jones, Kelsi Lasota and Anne Brinegar took third with a time of 12:58.93.
The most populated event of the day for the Broncos was undoubtedly the women’s weight throw. Britlie Silvester led the way with a 54-10 (16.71m) for third place, and Mallory Nelson was close behind in fifth thanks to a 51-5 (15.68m), which was also a personal best.
Courtney Hutchison took 11th (45-10 / 13.98m) and Morgan Van Kooten took 23rd (36-4 / 11.07m).
The men’s DMR team of Louis McAfee, Ozo Rojas, Tom Richardson and Aaron Back took second to Utah State with a time of 10:30.73. Two other Boise State squads toed the line and took third and fourth, respectively; Addison Dehaven, Riley Campbell, David Elliott and Keegan McCormick teamed together for a 10:37.15, and Elijah Armstrong, Jeff Lautenslager, Yusuke Ushikoshi and Rhys Park clocked a 10:41.05.
Annett Fleming of the Santa Barbara Track Club won the women’s pentathlon with 4,035 points, and the men’s pentathlon will resume tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with the 60m hurdles. Alaska Anchorage’s Cody Thomas sits in first place with 3,054 points.
Field events tomorrow will start tomorrow morning with the high jump at 9 a.m., and the first running event will begin at 10:45 a.m. with the Masters Mile.

POCATELLO, Idaho –
The Idaho State men's and women's track and field teams began the 2016 season inside Holt Arena with the Snake River Open on Friday, Jan. 15. The afternoon featured the women's pentathlon and the men's heptathlon.

"The Bengals had a really good first outing here with the combined events," said Head Coach Dave Nielsen.

Junior Bailey Woodbury won the pentathlon event and qualified for the Big Sky Championships with 3429 points after finishing in the top three of each event and winning the high jump with a height of 1.65m. Idaho State's Hope Mortensen (3103) and Maddison Ward (3055) took second and third respectively for a Bengal sweep in the pentathlon.

"Bailey Woodbury is a champion and has a conference qualifying mark," Nielsen said. "We have some other up and coming people that I thought competed really well."

On the men's side, senior Kyle Searle (2690 points) sits in first for the men's heptathlon with a 115 point lead over teammate James Rodeman (2575 points).

"On the men's side Kyle Searle looks quite good and our freshman Kyle Rodeman did a good job, but they have more to do tomorrow," Nielsen said.

Searle finished first in the 60m, shotput and high jump events while Rodeman had a meet-best 6.45m long jump. Searle's 11.27m throw in the shot put was a personal best. The men will complete their final three heptathlon events tomorrow morning.

The Snake River Open resumes tomorrow, Jan. 16, with the running events beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the field events starting at 10:15 a.m..

HOUSTON – Cameron Burrell set the bar high for the Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s Track and Field team after running the nation’s best time in the 60m dash, while the Cougars set 36 personal records in the squad’s first meet of 2016.
Burrell and his fellow Cougar sprinters qualified 1-through-7 in the preliminary round of the men’s 60m dash, with Burrell clocking the fastest qualifying time of 6.63. Burrell then ran 6.55, the current fastest time in the world, to lead the Cougars to a 1-through-5 finish in the final. Senior LeShon Collins ran a 6.64 which stands as the sixth fastest time in the world.
Junior Bria Carter helped lead the Cougars to a sweep in the 60m dash after clocking a 7.52 in the finals to win the event on the women’s side. Carter, the 2015 American Athletic Conference Champion in the 60, ran the 25th best time in the NCAA with her mark.
Sophomore high jumper Diayja Sheppard added an impressive notch on her victory belt after jumping a personal-best 1.78m (5’10”) in the event. Sheppard’s mark was enough to best 5-time Olympian Amy Acuff, who jumped the same height but on a later attempt.
The Cougar women would go on to win three more individual titles on the day, as well as claiming victory in the distance medley relay. Sophomores Kelsey Roy and Bailee Logsdon finished neck-and-neck in the 60m hurdles, with Roy winning in 8.81 and Logsdon finishing right on her heels in 8.82.
In the distance, sophomore Ebony White cruised to a victory in the mile run with a time of 5:16.34, while fellow sophomore Maria Gonzales ran 19:15.94 to win the women’s 5K.
The men’s sprinters were also able to come away with three victories on the day. Including Burrell’s nation’s best in the 60m dash, junior Xavier Floyd and freshman Raymund Clarke picked up wins in the 200m and 400m respectively. Floyd ran 22.36, while Clarke finished in a personal best 50.59 to win their respective events.
Houston finished the day with 25 top-3 finishes to go along with 36 new personal bests. In the shot put, freshman Nora Monie accomplished each of those feats. The Sharyland, Texas native threw 13.85m to set a personal record and finish second overall, and first among collegiate competitors.
The Cougars wrapped the 2016 edition of the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational with a sweep of all three relays. The women won the distance medley relay with a time of 12:27.58, only to follow that up with a victory in the 4x400m relay in 3:52.70. The men closed out the meet with a 3:23.84 to win the 4x400.
NATIONALLY RANKED SIGNING CLASS
The Cougars made noise throughout the entire offseason when the men’s signing class was ranked as the No. 2 class in the nation by Flotrack last July. The current freshmen on campus are led by three incoming student-athletes on the MileSplit All-American team. Marcus McWilliams (110m hurdles), Gerald Mills (200m) and John Lewis III (100m) all earned All-America honors, while distance runner Jahnavi Schneider was named as the No. 3 cross country recruit in the state of Texas by TxRunning.com.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars will host the 2016 editions of the Carl Lewis High School Invitational, and Joe Deloach Youth Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 16 and Sunday, Jan. 17 respectively. Some of the nation’s top young talent will be on display at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Houston will be back in action Jan. 23-24 when they head on the road for the first time in 2016 to compete in the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky. The two-day meet will be held at the Nutter Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Kentucky.

SEATTLE – Darian Brooks unleashed the longest triple jump in Stanford history, indoors or outdoors, as the Cardinal opened its track and field season at the UW Indoor Preview on Saturday.

Brooks, the defending conference champion indoors and outdoors, jumped 52-9 ¼ on his sixth and final attempt to improve by more than a foot and break his own year-old school indoor mark (52-2 3/4) by seven inches.
Close behind runner-up Brooks was teammate Jaak Uudmae, who uncoiled a huge personal record of his own, jumping 51-5 ¾ to move ahead of current NFL star Richard Sherman to No. 4 on Stanford’s all-time indoor performers’ list.
It was the sixth time that Brooks, a fifth-year senior jumping back in his hometown, has broken a school record over the past three years. At the 2013 Pac-12 meet, he broke the outdoor record four times in one day -- a mark that had stood since 1970 -- and now has twice shattered the indoor mark.
"This has been a four or five year process for him," said Michael Eskind, who coaches Stanford's jumps, pole vault, and multis. "He truly understands what he's trying to do and what he needs to do to continue to do some special things."
At the same time as the triple jump, the Cardinal men's pole vaulters were having a big day, finishing 1-2-3, and high jumper Dartis Willis was as well. Eskind said they were "feeding off each other."
The vaulters matched clearances of 17-3, with Dylan Duvio winning on fewer misses, followed by Garrett Starkey in second and Harrison Williams in third. Duvio was perfect until going out at 17-9. Williams, a decathlete, set a personal best by seven inches and jumped an exhausting 13 times in the competition. Williams also competed in the 60-meter hurdles (sixth, 8.29) and long jump (13th,), 21-7 ½).
Willis proved he is back in form. An All-America as a freshman, Willis cleared 7-0 for the first time since 2012. He finished third overall, but the top collegian after clearing 7-0 ½ on his first attempt at that height.
"We had a pretty special day today," Eskind said. "But by no means is this where things stop."
Other Stanford victories came in the women’s 800 (Malika Waschmann) and 1,000 (Rebecca Mehra), and Collin Leibold didn't win, but had a memorable Stanford track and field debut.

Leibold ran the fastest mile by a collegian this year, with a 4:02.65 on the 307-meter flat Mondo track. Leibold is a graduate transfer from Georgetown now working toward his master’s in epidemiology. A second-team All-America outdoors in the 5,000 last spring, the Virginia native arrived at Stanford with a foot injury suffered during the summer and was limited to only one cross country race. However, Saturday’s mile proved that Leibold is better than ever, improving upon his previous mile best of 4:03.29.

Leibold began the race conservatively, but moved up from eighth to tuck into third with a lap remaining on the 307-meter flat Mondo track at Dempsey Indoor. He moved into second on the final turn behind Dusty Solis, only for Nike’s Trevor Dunbar to overtake both to win in 4:01.41. Leibold eclipsed the previous season collegiate leader, Sean Tobin of Ole Miss (4:02.97).

Olivia Baker broke her own school record in the rarely-run 600 in perhaps the most anticipated race of the meet. Baker took on fellow sophomore Raevyn Rogers of Oregon, the 2015 NCAA outdoor 800 champion. Baker is the New Jersey high school 400 record-holder and became a second-team outdoor All-American in the 800 last year.
Stanford teammate Gaby Gayles took the race out hard as a rabbit, but Baker was unable to sustain the pace and gave up the lead on the backstretch of the final lap. Baker ran 1:29.08 to eclipse her Stanford record of 1:29.42, but finished third. Rogers ran 1:26.34 to not only break the meet and track records, but also the collegiate record for oversized tracks (over 200 meters).

In the 1,000, Mehra made a bold move on the backstretch of the to join teammate Claudia Saunders in the lead, only for Oregon’s Annie Leblanc to move from the outside as they came off the turn. As Saunders faded, Mehra held off Leblanc down the stretch to win in 2:45.28. Saunders was eighth in 2:47.27.

Waschmann, a junior, earned her first collegiate victory by taking the lead entering the final straight and powering down the homestretch to win in 2:08.96.

Among other highlights, Jackson Shumway, a 400 hurdler by trade, equaled his best outdoor time in the open 400. Shumway’s 47.71 moved him up to No. 7 all-time indoors at Stanford. He was second in the race.

The meet also marked the collegiate debut for three Stanford freshmen. Kaitlyn Merritt (12-6 ¼) and Jackie McNulty (12-0 ½) were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the women’s pole vault. Heptathlete Brittany McGee competed in the long jump (fourth, 18-11 1/4), 60 hurdles (10th, 8.95), and 200 (28th, 26.33).

As for Brooks, he may have left Dempsey Indoor with mixed feelings. He jumped farther than he ever has, but fell short of the winning 53-11 jump of USC’s Eric Sloan, a junior college transfer making his four-year college debut. Sloan jumped just once, but his first attempt in the first flight stood. Brooks, in the second flight, was forced to compete from behind the entire competition. Brooks has won the past two Pac-12 outdoor titles and the 2015 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor crown, but the feeling is that he and Sloan will have some memorable duels to come.

USC came out of the blocks strongly in the season-opening UW Indoor Preview Meet in Seattle, Wash. today (Jan. 16), winning six events, setting one school record and two meet records. "Today was a solid day of competition," said USC Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert. "We had several great opening marks and for the most part everyone opened up ahead of where they were last year. The jumpers were very impressive today because the marks were earned using half approaches in order to work on the technical aspects of their events.""We held back some of the sprinters so they can rest and prepare for the meet in Birmingham next week and the rest of the season," added Smith Gilbert. "We have been experiencing a few nagging injuries here and there. I was exited to see the throwers compete and they did an outstanding job. This week we will go back to the drawing board and get ready for next week's competition." Senior Jaide Stepter won the women's 400m dash with a meet-record time of 53.18. Taking second place was sophomore Kendall Ellis who had a time of 53.54.
