JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.– (Complete Results) A pair of three-peat individual champions and a meet record highlight the second day of the NAIA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field National Championships at the David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field on Thursday.
Kale Wolken of Doane (Neb.) collected his third consecutive national championship in the heptathlon. He finished with a total of 5,396, which is the second-highest point total he produced in his title runs. Lucas Wiechman of Concordia (Neb.) placed second at 5,176 points with Winston Lawson of Vanguard (Calif.) claiming third at 5,009.
Also recording a third-consecutive national championship was Talitha Fagen of Eastern Oregon, who cleared a height of 3.87m (12-08.25) to win the women’s pole vault. She won the titles in 2014 and 2015 by clearing heights of 3.83m (12-06.75) and 3.88m (12-08.75). Taylor Tepper of Bethel (Ind.) and Kaitlyn Moricz of Marian (Ind.) placed second and third, respectively.
In all, a total of 11 championships were decided on Friday. The first two titles to be decided were the women’s and men’s 3000-meter race walk, which were swept by St. Ambrose (Iowa). Jenny Lopez captured St. Ambrose’s first-ever women’s individual championship, winning with a time of 14:47.45 – over 32 seconds faster than second-place Kayla Hunt of Cornerstone (Mich.). Abby Dunn of Goshen (Ind.) took third. In men’s race, Anthony Peters scored the win for St. Ambrose with a time of 12:18.59, nearly two minutes ahead of the rest of the field. Doug Hutcherson of Central Methodist (Mo.) and Bernard Graham of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) rounded out the top three.
In the women’s 4x800 relays, Benedictine (Kan.) used a strong kick during the final leg to record a time of 9:09.37 in claiming the title. St. Francis (Ill.) crossed the line seconds, moments ahead of Aquinas (Mich.). In the men’s 4x800 relay, Friends (Kan.) netted the victory, crossing the line in 7:34.31. Indiana Tech took second in 7:37.08, less than a half-second ahead of third-place Wayland Baptist (Texas).
The women’s weight throw saw the meet record go down. Kasey Renshaw of Siena Heights (Mich.) won with a toss of 21.20m (69-06.75), besting the 2009 mark of 19.79 (64-11.25) set by Aubrey Baxter of Black Hills State (S.D.) in 2009. This is also Renshaw’s second title in a row. Hastings’ Sarah Olsen was second at 18.77m (61-07.0), while Rebecca Cousineau of Siena Heights placed third. In the men’s weight throw, Cody Boellstorff of Concordia (Neb.) claimed the top prize with a throw of 21.26m (69-09.0), while Zebullah Hoffman of Evergreen State (Wash.) and Zachary Lurz of Concordia placed second and third, respectively.
In the women’s long jump, Jonina Brinson earned Mobile’s (Ala.) first-ever women’s individual championship with a leap of 5.77m (18-11.25). Siena Heights’ Madison Pierce was second at 5.66m (18-07.0), while Hastings’ Shantinique Cunningham placed third at 5.65m (18-06.50). In the men’s long jump, Doane’s Kevin Murphy came out on top with a jump of 7.38m (24-02.50) with Indiana Tech’s Keshawn Robinson landing second at 7.35m (24-01.50). Eric England of Eastern Oregon placed third.
In the men’s high jump, Michael Moffitt of Indiana Wesleyan won by clearing a height of 2.16m (7-01.0). Anthony Johnson of Evergreen State and Gerald Richardson of Siena Heights finished second and third.
In addition, semifinals where held in 15 track events to set the stage for Saturday’s finals.

Q&A with Nick Willis
Future Friday: Q&A with Nick Willis
March 4, 2016
![Nick Willis photo]()
Nick WillisAfter representing the block M with pride while they competed for the Maize and Blue, our student-athlete alumni have gone off to become professionals in different areas of their lives. Whether they continued on in their sport, helped to build up a company or started a family, they are building a future. They are building our future. As they leave the University of Michigan campus they go forth with all they learned here to create a better future for us all.
Nick Willis is among the most decorated middle-distance athletes in Michigan history, and was recognized for his incredible accomplishments and contributions in Michigan track and field history with his induction into the men's program Hall of Fame this past October. Willis, along with nine other Wolverine athletes and coaches, became the first Hall of Fame Class to be inducted since 2012 and the first during the tenure of head coach Jerry Clayton. More meaningful than the honor itself was the recognition of being inducted with legendary coach Ron Warhurst, with whom Willis still trains to this day.
A three-year letterman (2003-05), Willis collected five All-America honors as a Wolverine, including one as an individual NCAA champion (2005, Mile). Willis also earned the title 'national champion' as a member of the storied 2004 Distance Medley Relay (DMR) NCAA championship team, which just had its 12-year-old program record broken last month. Overall, Willis collected six Big Ten titles, including three straight indoor 3,000-meter titles from 2003-05, before moving on to a professional career in the sport. That career has included an opportunity to represent his native New Zealand in a number of international competitions, highlighted by three Olympic Games so far (2004, 2008, 2012), which included a 1,500-meter silver medal in 2008 and the honor of serving as New Zealand team captain and flag bearer for his nation during the 2012 Games in London.
As he gears up for his fourth Olympics in Rio this coming summer, Willis continues to compete professionally for Adidas running. He set a (then) world-leading mile time last month at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, Massachusetts, before a runner-up finish at the NYRR Millrose Games' famous Wanamaker Mile race in mid-February. With the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, on the horizon (March 17-20), Willis is in peak training season, but still found the time to catch up with us, discussing his own career, the 2016 edition of the record-breaking DMR and the importance of the event in U-M track and field history.
Q.Your Hall of Fame induction last October was an emotional night for everyone involved. What made the night so special for you?
A.It's absolutely a huge honor. I was actually shocked and surprised that it would happen so early; I assumed that would happen when someone retires from the sport and I'm still competing, so it was a bit of a surprise, but it was really cool when I realized that they wanted to do it so that Nate (Brannen) and I could go in with Ron (Warhurst) at the same time.
To see generations of athletes from so many different eras being honored gave me a much greater appreciation for the program that I hadn't fully known before. The background stories that were told; you don't ever hear about that stuff or read about in formalized articles written about the athletes. That was really special to be a part of and emphasized how important of a role my time in Ann Arbor and my time at the University of Michigan has played in me becoming an adult and an international athlete.
Q.While you live and train in Ann Arbor for most of the year, you also make time to return to New Zealand with your wife, Sierra, and son, Lachlan, for a few months each year around the holidays. You've also been a proponent of athletes taking one day off each week from training, and other similar philosophies. Why do you feel that's important and how have you seen it benefit your own career?
A. I think, as is the case in all facets of life, it's important to have balance. You can't be all-or-nothing otherwise it's not sustainable in my opinion. Some area of your life is going to break down and it's going to have consequences, so it's important to me to have a life outside of my sport and it's important to make sure the people that I value and that are important to me, that I give them the time they deserve and that's my friends and my family. In return, they have supported me even more and that's given me added impetus and refreshment so that I can do what I need to do when it comes down to training hard each week.
Q.As doping scandals in the sport of track and field grab the attention of fans in the U.S. and internationally, you have been open in your views and suggested solutions to the issue. What led you to speak up and be a public leader in your sport, and do you feel the voices of athletes are being heard?
A. I'm actually a little bit surprised that the media has such an interest in my opinions. If anything, it shows that there aren't that many voices out there. They are looking for anyone to give them a quote because there aren't many athletes that really want to, because they either don't want to focus their time and energy on it, or there might be some repercussions from sponsors or someone else that might end up taking away their opportunities. Not many people are speaking, so as one of the elder statesmen of our sport I feel it's an important responsibility to try and leave the sport as best as I possibly can before my time comes at the end of my career.
Your opinion becomes affirmed more and more as you get older and that gives you more confidence that people actually do value what you have to say, so you become less timid and more willing to speak out when necessary. What I've realized is that you have to take a stand on some things in life; you can't just be lukewarm or on the fence. It's an important thing to do as a human, and I happen to be a track and field athlete, and that's a major issue going on with us at the moment.
Q.With the NCAA Championships coming next weekend (March 11-12), you must be excited about the return of a Michigan DMR to the national meet. For fans who may not have as much knowledge of that tradition, can you explain the significance of the DMR, and how it can be used to measure the current state of the program?
A. What the DMR represents is a range of coaching abilities. As the cross country and distance coach (Kevin Sullivan), you have to coach everywhere from 800 meters all the way up to 10,000 meters. The DMR draws upon the depth and range of the athletes' different types of abilities, from the mile all the way down to 400 meters.
In that way, it really establishes your program's name out there from a national perspective and that really helps with recruiting in the future. It allows you to sort of put your hand up and say 'we are a legitimate school'. It's your version of dominating the distance side of the sport during the track season once cross country season is over.
Q.As a member of the 2004 national championship DMR team, you not only helped set the program record at the time (9:27.77), which was broken last month, but you also won a national championship. What was your lasting memory from that experience?
A. There's something unique about being part of a team in that way. It's the only time I've ever celebrated during a race down the back straight. I think with 150 meters to go, I raised the baton to the crowd on the back straight, most of them Wolverine fans, and you'd never dream of doing that in an individual race because it would be deemed as cocky or arrogant or disrespectful to your competitors.
It was a joy going through that team experience saying 'We did this' while representing Michigan instead of ourselves. That's what members of football or basketball teams get to experience all of the time, feeling as if you're representing the block M, and not just yourself as an individual, which is what we often can be (doing) as track and field athletes.
Q.You are also an avid speedgolf player, with a top-10 finish at the 2015 Speedgolf World Championships. You came across the sport while researching legendary American miler Steve Scott, who also competed in speedgolf and on the track, years ago, and have stuck with the sport ever since. Why do you think it fits your personality so well?
A. It fits my personality really well because I don't have a huge attention span. I like to get up to try something, give it a go and call it a day. Five hours on a golf course isn't really something that I consider an enjoyable thing -- and I love golf. So here I've found a way to get it done in under an hour and have a blast doing it.
When I'm training I don't run (the course), I drive around in a cart, but I play either first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening when there's no one else around so nobody is able to get in my way. I enjoy action, and this is a way of turning golf into more of an action sport as opposed to more of a passive experience.
The 2015-16 academic year marks the 150th anniversary of Michigan Athletics. Crouser Only New Addition To Pre-NCAA Championships Bowerman Men’s Watch List
Bowerman Men’s Watch List
NEW ORLEANS— Have the men on The Bowerman Watch List this season been more consistent or spectacular?
We probably need to amend a third option to say, "both."
Through the first two months of the collegiate track & field season, there have been some incredible performances. The 10 men on the newest edition of The Bowerman Watch List, released Thursday by The Bowerman Watch List Committee, have turned in their share of those.
Nine of the 10 men from last month’s Watch List return to the pre-NCAA Indoor Championship edition — Oregon’s Devon Allen, TCU’s Ronnie Baker, Tennessee’s Jake Blakenship, Texas A&M’s Donavan Brazier, Oregon’s Edward Cheserek, Penn State’s Brannon Kidder, Arkansas’ Jarrion Lawson, Oklahoma State’s Nick Miller and Georgia’s Maicel Uibo.
Gone, however, is Florida’s Najee Glass. In his place is Texas’ Ryan Crouser.
This is the first time since the March 2014’s pre-Championship edition that the Watch List is without a Gator.
Crouser knocked Glass off the list and into the "also receiving votes" category following a monster throw at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships.
It was in Ames, Iowa, where Crouser unleased a titanic heave of 21.73m (71-3.5) to tie the collegiate record set by Arizona State’s Ryan Whiting in 2008. It was the second throw of Crouser’s career that sailed more than 70 feet.
Crouser, who makes the 19th apperance of his career on the Watch List, is the second member of this illustrious group to have tied or broken a collegiate record this season. Back in January, Kidder ran 2:18.26 in the 1000 meters to undo Rich Peters‘ two-year-old mark.
Another man on the Watch List came awfully close to establishing his own history last month at the NYRR Millrose Games.
Cheserek, competing in the Paavo Nurmi 3000, clocked the fastest time at that distance next to Arkansas’ Alistair Cragg and his record-setting jaunt of 7:38.59 in 2004. Cheserek’s 7:40.51 also gave him his second NCAA-leading time of the season (also is the top-ranked athlete at 5000 meters).
Baker also found himself in elite company after he blistered the field in the 60-meter finals at the Big 12 Championships. His time of 6.51 gave him a collegiate lead and tied him for sixth on the all-time chart.
So Baker, Cheserek and Crouser stole the headlines in February after Brazier and Kidder made them in January — but let’s not discount what Brazier and Kidder added to their resume in the shortest month.
Brazier captured his first SEC 800-meters title in a thrilling race that saw the third- and fifth-fastest times run in the nation.
Kidder, like Cheserek, participated in the NYRR Millrose Games. While his performance wasn’t nearly as historic, Kidder finished a narrow runner-up to two-time U.S. champion Duane Solomon in the 800.
What about those other men — with the exception of Miller, who doesn’t have indoor eligibility?
Blakenship rallied from a slow start to the season and reclaimed the top spot in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.72m (18-9.25).
Allen crushed the field at the MPSF Championships en route to his 60-hurdles title (7.60) and held that collegiate lead until LSU’s Jordan Moore matched it the following afternoon.
Lawson also saw his collegiate lead equaled in the past month, but owns the most leaps of eight meters or more this season (four). He also qualified for NCAAs in the 60 (6.62).
Uibo is still trying to find his footing and is currently ranked fourth in the heptathlon.
Those athletes who didn’t receive enough votes to be included on the Watch List — in addition to Glass — were Texas’ Zach Bilderback, Georgia’s Garrett Scantling, Southern California’s Eric Sloan and Washington’s Izaic Yorks.
Oregon’s Jenna Prandini and Florida’s Marquis Dendy are the reigning winners of The Bowerman, which is named for legendary Oregon track & field and cross country coach Bill Bowerman.
Past winners include Olympic gold medalist, four-time World Champion and decathlon world-record holder Ashton Eaton (2010), 10,000-meter Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp (2009), 2011 IAAF World Champion at 1500 meters Jenny Simpson (2009), 2013 100-meter hurdles World Champion Brianna Rollins (2013) as well as 2012 Olympic high jump bronze medalist and 2015 World Champion Derek Drouin (2013).
Crouser Only New Addition To Pre-NCAA Championships Bowerman Men’s Watch List
March 3, 2016NEW ORLEANS— Have the men on The Bowerman Watch List this season been more consistent or spectacular?
We probably need to amend a third option to say, "both."
Through the first two months of the collegiate track & field season, there have been some incredible performances. The 10 men on the newest edition of The Bowerman Watch List, released Thursday by The Bowerman Watch List Committee, have turned in their share of those.
The Bowerman Men’s Watch List —Pre-NCAA Indoor Championships
|
Gone, however, is Florida’s Najee Glass. In his place is Texas’ Ryan Crouser.
This is the first time since the March 2014’s pre-Championship edition that the Watch List is without a Gator.
|
|

NCAA DIII Indoor Team Dual Meet Rankings – March 2
NCAA DIII Indoor Team Dual Meet Rankings – March 2

By Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA
March 2, 2016
NEW ORLEANS – Both the UW-La Crosse men and women extended their leads in the NCAA Division III National Dual Meet Rankings, announced Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
In the penultimate edition of the rankings, the Eagles both improved their team scores into the 180s. The men checked in at 187.45 points (more on the points later), more than five points ahead of WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire (182.27), while the women came in at 186.07, nearly three points ahead of the UWEC women (183.28).
Four men’s teams within approximately one point of another were in line behind UWL and UWEC: No. 3 Augustana (Ill.) (180.80), No. 4 UW-Oshkosh (180.19), No. 5 UW-Whitewater (179.67) and No. 6 MIT (179.65) are all exceptionally close in the standings.
The women’s race behind UWL and UWEC has a bit more breathing room. No. 3 UW-Oshkosh (180.51), No. 4 Ithaca (178.38) and No. 5 MIT (176.90) are all separated from one another by about two points.
The full rankings – including breakdowns by region, conference and head-to-head match-up – can be found below and on D3Rankings.us.
These rankings, compiled by Carnegie Mellon’s Gary Aldrich and released every Wednesday during the season, differ from the USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings in one important respect.
While the USTFCCCA Rankings are designed to forecast how programs might fare at the NCAA Championships, these Team Dual Meet Rankings are indicative of how full teams with two athletes per event would fare in head-to-head competition.
Scores are the sums of all points earned by a team in each event. Only two athletes per team may be considered in each event (and one relay team per event), and an athlete can only be used in up to three events, excluding relays. Points are based on the best marks by those athletes in the current season.
Programs must be a member of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association to be eligible for the rankings. You can check your membership status here. In addition, a member of that program’s coaching staff has to submit the rankings
More information on the process can be found here.

Lavillenie vaults world-leading 6.03m (19-9 1/4) in Jablonec
05 MAR 2016 Report Jablonec, Czech Republic
With a world-leading 6.03m pole vault clearance at the Jablonec Indoor Gala on Saturday (5), Renaud Lavillenie showed that his early season problems are well and truly behind him.
The world record-holder struggled with ankle and knee problems in his first few competitions of the year. But a 6.02m win in Clermont-Ferrand last month proved to be a turning point and he followed that up six days later with a 5.93m victory at the French Championships.
With the IAAF World Indoor Championships Portland 2016 now less than two weeks away, Lavillenie appears to be hitting his top form as he seeks to regain the world indoor title he first won in 2012.
The Frenchman opened his series with a first-time clearance at 5.74m, a height only one other athlete – Jan Kudlicka of the Czech Republic – managed to successfully negotiate. Kudlicka exited the competition with three failures at the next height, 5.83m, while Lavillenie returned to the runway with the bar at 5.90m and cleared it on his first try.
He then raised the bar to 6.03m and needed just two attempts to get over it, brushing it slightly. He ended his series with three tries at 6.10m, some of which were close.
Earlier in the competition, Emmanouil Karalis of Greece set a world U18 best of 5.54m, adding one centimetre to the mark he set last month.
After winning his heat in 6.59, he stormed through to win the final in a season’s best of 6.50, the second-fastest mark of his career behind the 6.49 with which he won the world indoor title in 2014. Fellow Briton Theo Etienne, just 19 years old, clocked a PB of 6.56 in second.
In the women’s event, Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye equalled her own national record to win the final in 7.10, having clocked 7.11 in the heats. Slovenia’s Maja Mihalinec set PBs of 7.25 in the heats and 7.24 in the final.
Britain’s Tiffany Porter is another athlete who is clearly rounding into form at the right time. The European champion set a season’s best of 7.93 in the heats of the 60m hurdles before speeding to 7.89 in the final.
Croatia’s Andrea Ivancevic was second in 7.98, having set a national record of 7.94 in the heats. World bronze medallist Alina Talay ran 7.98 in the heats, but clipped the second hurdle in the final and lost her rhythm, jogging home in last place.
The closest event of the night was the men’s 60m hurdles. USA’s Jarret Eaton had to pull out a season’s best of 7.54 to beat Hungary’s Balazs Baji (7.56) and USA’s Jeff Porter (7.57).
Much to the delight of the crowd, there were two Czech victories, courtesy of Tomas Stanek and Radek Juska.
Stanek unleashed a PB of 21.30m to move from fourth to first with his final throw of the shot put, handing IAAF World Indoor Tour winner Tim Nedow his first defeat of the 2016 indoor season. Two-time Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski was third with 20.40m while world junior champion Konrad Bukowiecki was fourth with 20.37m.
European indoor silver medallist Radek Juska leapt a season’s best of 8.03m to comfortably win the long jump by 27 centimetres.

Lavillenie vaults world-leading 6.03m in Jablonec
Kilty bounces back
World indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty was disqualified for a false start in his semifinal at last weekend’s British Indoor Championships and subsequently declined selection for Portland. But nevertheless he lined up in Jablonec, his final race of the indoor season, feeling as though he had a point to prove. After winning his heat in 6.59, he stormed through to win the final in a season’s best of 6.50, the second-fastest mark of his career behind the 6.49 with which he won the world indoor title in 2014. The records continued to fall when W65 throw Meryle Mensey tossed an AR of 11.06m/36-3.50 in the super weight.
W40 multi-eventer Rachel Guest broke the existing pentathlon AR by more than 200 points, scoring 3,737 after five events. She was the day’s top competitor at every discipline, running 9.28 in the 60mH, jumping 1.47m/4-9.75, throwing the shot put 9.34m/30-07.75, leaping 5.17m/16-11.5 in long jump and finishing the 800m in 2:43:49. Outdoors, she also holds the W35 heptathlon record.
M40 sprinter Antwon Dussett broke the 400m AR after splitting 22.96 at the 200m to finish in 49.32.
Emma Mcgowan was the fastest W45 in the 400m, as she ran 1.00.01, just off the 59.30 she ran earlier this year to break the standing 59.37 AR.
M90 competitors Dixon Hemphill and Orville Rogers kicked off the men’s 400m races as the 91-year-old Hemphill took the lead heading into the second and final lap. Hemphill finished first in 3:26.05 with 98-year-old Rogers in second at 3:51.91.

Quotes
Ed Burke, M75 Weight Throw and Super Weight Throw Champion
On breaking the World and American records
“I made the world record on my first throw. When you do that, it feels good and you can take a deep breath.”
On what keeps him going
“Putting demands on yourself and achieving them.”
On how long he will continue
“Why quit - there is no reason to quit.”
Rachel Guest, W40 Pentathlon Champion
On breaking the record
“I have the W35 American record in pentathlon. I broke it twice while I was in that age division. This past summer in Lyon, France, I ended up breaking the W40 heptathlon record by over 1,000 points at the World Masters Athletics Championships, so coming into any championships, I am always looking at where I am and what my possibilities are. I knew that as long as I hit good averages today, I could get it.”
Antwon Dussett, M40 400m Champion
On competing in Albuquerque and managing the altitude
“Over the past few months, I’ve been training with an altitude mask to kind of help get myself get acclimated for here. It felt good running. I knew if I came around the 200-meter mark around 22.5, I would set myself up good for where I wanted to be.”
On what it feels like to break the record
“It feels great! It’s something I’ve been aspiring for the last couple of years that I have been getting closer to the 40-year-olds age group. It’s something that I wanted to do, and we’ll see what happens in the 200 meters next.”
Chaunte Lowe
On competing at USATF Masters Indoor Championships
“It’s fun because they’re doing it for the love of sport, and a lot of times it’s always so intense at the U.S. nationals and international competitions. I like the feel of enjoying the sport.”
On her goal coming into the day
“My goal was to jump 1.97m/6-5.5, and I felt like I had it in my legs. It’s a little frustrating to be so close at not make it at those heights. But at the same time, it is what it is.”

Edward Burke (hammer thrower)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Ed Burke (hammer throw))
For other people named Edward Burke, see Edward Burke (disambiguation).
Edward ("Ed") Andrew Burke (born March 4, 1940) is an Americanhammer thrower, especially famous for carrying the flag of the United States at the Olympics in Los Angeles 1984. He was born in Ukiah, California. His best result at the Olympics was the 7th place in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He also threw in the 1968 Summer Olympics, coming in as a favorite after setting the U.S. record of 235' 11" at the 1967 AAU Championships in Bakersfield, California (the same meet Jim Ryun ran his long standing 3:51.1 mile record), then the number two performance in history. After being (unjustly) called for a foul on his first two throws, he was so disappointed in his results that he retired from the sport following the Olympics. In 1979, he watched the World Cup on television with his daughters who had never seen dad throw. He marveled at the relative small size of champion Sergei Litvinov (URS). Just shy of his 40th birthday, he decided to give the Hammer one more whirl. After training he made the United States team at the first IAAF World Championships, and achieved his lifetime best of 243' 11" in the process of qualifying for his third Olympics at age 44 (a feat his contemporary Al Oerter also attempted and failed that year). He was the first American to achieve qualifying for Olympic teams 20 years apart (since equalled by Francie Larrieu-Smith, also from the San Jose area, in 1992). Being the oldest member of the team and a remarkable story, he was selected to carry the flag in the hometown Olympic Opening Ceremonies by the team captains.
“ | That’s what I’m known for. It’s one of those quirks of fate. People can’t remember who won the gold medal, but they remember the guy who carried the flag into the stadium.”[1] | ” |
Promoting throwing[edit]
Following the Olympics, he again retired to tend the Los Gatos Athletic Club. He joined fellow Olympian, Discus Thrower Mac Wilkins in forming Explorer Post 813 in San Jose, California, dedicated to introducing boys and girls to the art of throwing. They constructed throwing cages next to Highway 85, enlisting the help of other world-class athletes training in the hotbed San Jose area. 30 graduates of their program have gone on to throw for NCAA Division I schools, two of them Dave Popejoy and Kevin McMahon made U.S. Olympic teams.[1]Masters[edit]
21 years after his second retirement, he returned to competition in the 65-year-old division.[1] and promptly set the World Record for his age division.[2] After turning 70 in 2010, he did it again in his new age division.[3]“ | I like training, but I like training for a purpose. I don’t really care how far I throw, I like the movement. It’s a puzzle. It’s been a puzzle my whole life.”[1] | ” |

Morgan and Cowart crowned Pan American cross-country champions
05 MAR 2016 Report Vargas, Venezuela
Allison Grace Morgan (Bend, Oregon) and Donald Cowart of the USA took the elite titles at the 2nd Pan American Cross Country Championships at the Caraballeda Golf Course in the state of Vargas, Venezuela, on Friday (4).
The duo, wearing the USA uniform for the first time, led their country to top the overall standings after compiling results from all six races (under 18, under 20 and senior) for both men and women. A total 130 athletes from 11 countries braved the 30C temperatures.
Morgan, 32, covered the 10km distance in 37:42 and prevailed over Canada’s Pan American Games 1500m bronze medallist Sasha Gollish (37:54) and Luiz Mery Rojas of Peru, third in 38:05.
In the men’s 10km race, Morgan’s compatriot Cowart held off the challenge from Brazil’s Gilberto Silvestre, silver medallist at the 2015 edition, to cross the finish line first in 31:20, ahead of Silvestre (31:36) and USA’s Max King (31:43).
Peru featured prominently in the event with their athletes winning medals in five of the six races, including two titles in the under-18 category.
Ruth Karina Basilio became the first continental champion on Friday as she covered the 4km race in 14:35, in a close battle with Mexico’s María de Jesus Ruiz, second in 14:36. Another Peruvian, Lida Meneses, rounded out the podium in third with 14:56.
Edward Condori gave the South American nation its second win of the day as he covered the 6km race in 20:27 ahead of Jose de Sousa of Brazil (20:35) and Venezuela’s Frammik Semprun (20:47), the only medal winner for the host country.
The U20 crowns went to Canada’s Branna McDougall and Brazil’s Daniel Ferreira, who both improved from their bronze medal performance a year ago in Colombia.
McDougall and fellow Canadian Madeleine Ghazarian moved away from defending champion Saida Menenses in the 6km race to set the stage for a photo finish, with just 0.39 seconds separating both athletes: McDougall (21:31.33) and Ghazarian (21.31.72). Meneses settled for third in 21:58.
Ferreira covered the 8km distance in 26:06 to win Brazil’s only title on Friday. Thomas Pollard of the USA and Omar Ramos of Peru joined him on the podium.
Athletes from Ecuador, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Colombia and Trinidad and Tobago also took part in the annual event, held for the first time in Barranquilla, Colombia, in 2015.
