MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin junior Morgan McDonald is well-known for his ability on the track, winning a Big Ten title last winter in the 3000 meters and earning first-team All-America honors in the outdoor 5000 meters last June.

McDonald showed that he's also a force to be reckoned with on the cross country course on Friday as the Sydney, Australia, native claimed third at the 2016 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour on Friday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.

The junior finished with a time of 23 minutes, 55.4 seconds after making a late surge on the homestretch to propel himself into the top three. McDonald led the No. 16 Badgers to an 11th place finish against the talented field that included 19 ranked teams from the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Poll.

"It feels amazing, I feel like I haven't really been this accomplished in a big cross country race like this before," McDonald said. "It means a lot to me, and you know it looks really good the rest of the season if I keep going up."

Justyn Knight of Syracuse won the individual title with a time of 23:53.1, just ahead of Northern Arizona's Futsum Zienasellassie, who clocked in at 23:55.1. Zienasellassie helped No. 1 Northern Arizona capture the men's team title with 78 points, 40 ahead of second-place finisher Stanford.

"This is awesome, if you're into cross country, this is where it's at. Look at the crowd out here today," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "When you look at the teams and look at the ranked teams that were here, and how competitive both races were, this was a great day for our sport."

For the Badgers, freshman Olin Hacker took 60th with a time of 24:41.9 coming across the finish line. Following Hacker was junior Joe Hardy (24:51.9) and freshman Ben Eidenschink (24:52.7), taking 77th and 81st respectively.

Senior Russell Sandvold followed up his Badger Classic victory with a fifth-place finish for UW, taking 92nd overall with a time of 24:56.7.

McDonald started the eight-kilometer race near the front of the pack, but was sitting outside of the top 10 until the mid-way point of the competition.

"Morgan made a mistake and he went out too slow," Byrne said. "When the big guns up front were just relaxing after one mile, Morgan was working hard just to get back into that race. But he'll learn from that, but that was a big statement for him to come out in that type of field and I think he's going to get a lot of confidence from it."

McDonald made his big push around the six-kilometer marker of the race, edging into the top five with Knight, Zienasellassie, Stanford's Grant Fisher and North Carolina State's George Parsons, who was the leader of the race for most of the afternoon.

"I just tried to be there when the move was made and just stick on the back of the front pack and to be able to respond and have a good finish," McDonald said.

Once the runners began their dash to the finish line, McDonald reared back for his final kick and passed two others to earn a third-place result.

"You just get that second wind down the final straight," McDonald said. "There was such a good crowd and you just know that you are doing it for them and you are doing it for your team and it really pulled me through to finish pretty strong at the end there."

Individually, Fisher wound up with a fourth-place finish while Parsons placed fifth. Knight added to his prestigious collegiate accolades with the victory, as the junior earned All-America honors in 2015 to go along with his No. 4 individual ranking in the Saucony Flo50 Men's National Poll.

"There were a lot of major players that are going to be around in November out here today," Byrne said. "Both races were awesome. To see those top individuals getting after it like that, it's exciting, it's great for our sport."

Zienasellassie, who came in ranked No. 3 in the individual poll, and teammates Matthew Baxter, Tyler Day and Cory Glines all finished in the top 20 to give Northern Arizona its third team win of the year in as many meets. Stanford took second with Fisher and Sean McGorty each earning top-10 finishes to give the Cardinal 118 points.

BYU took third place with 144 points, followed by last year's champion, Syracuse. The No. 2 Orange finished with 167 points. Rounding out the top five was Iona with 240 points, including a pair of runners in the top 15.

"We were solid, we obviously wanted to be in that top 10," Byrne said. "There were a couple of schools that were right ahead of us that I think are going to be big players down the road when it comes to at-large points, and we missed an opportunity. But you have to grow from this, you have to learn from this."

"I said to the guys the other night, look, on Monday morning the race is over, we are going to turn the page. We have to prepare now for the Big Tens."

The Badgers will travel back to the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minnesota for the 2016 Big Ten Cross Country Championship on Oct. 30. Wisconsin won the Oz Memorial Invitational earlier this year at the course, and will look to win the Big Ten for the 16th time in the last 18 years. The men's eight-kilometer race will begin at 11 a.m. following the women's six-kilometer race at 10 a.m.

Matched Against the Nation's Best, No. 1 NAU Shines at Nuttycombe Invite
MADISON, Wis.– How do you celebrate a spectacular team victory at one of the nation's most touted cross country races of the year? Apparently when you're in Wisconsin, you do so with cheese.
The No. 1 Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks stepped up to the challenge in what was the squad's first true test of the 2016 season, living up to their ranking with a first place finish at the 2016 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Friday afternoon.
In total, the Lumberjacks—competing against the likes of 18 other top-30 teams—mustered 78 points compared to second-place Stanford's 118 and third-place BYU's 144.
"All seven of our athletes were in the upper quarter of the race and as the pace started to pick up, I felt like our men were able to handle it," said Director of Cross Country Eric Heins. "Coming in, I would think our athletes had a lot of expectations on them from back home, and there's a lot of pressure when you come into a race like this with that 'No. 1' on your back. I was really pleased with how they handled that."
"In terms of making a statement, I think there were so many publications that didn't know what we were about because honestly, we hadn't raced yet. It was great for the men to show up today and show where we're at."
From the get-go, it was clear Heins' crew wanted to set the tone and maneuver their way into the lead pack among the field of 30 teams and 207 athletes. Never truly wavering, each scoring Lumberjack placed within the top-31 runners, including top-10 performances from Matt Baxter and three-time XC All-American Futsum Zienasellassie.
The low stick for the Lumberjacks so often in his career, Zienasellassie debuted his 2016 season with a second-place finish and 23:55.1 time. Sticking with the lead pack for basically the entire duration of the race, never falling out of the top-15, Zienasellassie maintained a solid pace as he was able to glide in as the event's runner-up.
Not to be outdone, Baxter—coming off a first-place finish at the Sycamore Invitational last month—hovered just a few strides back of Zienasellassie in order to secure that second single-digit finish Heins was hoping for (8th—24:02.5).
"[Ziensellassie] ran perfectly today; it was just what we needed from him," said Heins. "We needed him to get a low stick and he maintained a good position in the lead pack but also made sure he wasn't too far from his teammates, either. I thought it was a great race from him."
True sophomore Tyler Day also made his inaugural 2016 XC appearance, hustling his way in at 17th with a 24:15.7 mark. In fact, compared to last year's Wisconsin race, Day improved his time by nearly three seconds and jumped 57 places on the individual leaderboard from 2015 to 2016.
Redshirt-junior Cory Glines (24:19.5) and redshirt-sophomore Geordie Beamish (24:26.2) turned in 20th place and 31st place performances, respectively,  and rounded out the scoring for the Lumberjack men.
The NAU women also competed on Friday, running before their male counterparts in the 6K championship race. Highlighted by a top-three of Melanie Townsend (33rd—20:46.1), Mikayla Malaspina (83rd--21:15.6) andKylie Goo (Westmoor HS, Daly City, CA) (115th--21:36.1), the Lumberjacks produced a gusty and effortful 24th-place team finish. In fact, all three moved up significantly on the individual leaderboard compared to last season's Wisconsin race, with Townsend moving six spots up this year, Malaspina 23 ticks and Goo 26 places.
Emily Roughan (163rd—22:08) and Miranda Myers
(Carmichael, Calif. / St. Francis High School)
(196th—23:02.9) also turned in scores for NAU today, while Paige Gilchrist ran in the women's 6K "B" race during the morning session and pieced together a solid showing in her first competitive race of the year.
"We wanted our women to move up throughout the race," said Heins, "and every single one of our runners—if you took their split where they were positioned at the 4K mark to where they finished—did that. From the one mile to the finish, they moved up the entire time, which was a great confidence boost for them."
The 'Jacks will send some athletes to Tempe, Ariz., next weekend for a race at Arizona State before traveling to Moscow, Idaho, for Big Sky Conference Championships on Friday, October 28.

Four Takeaways From Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational

By Tyler Mayforth, USTFCCCA
October 14, 2016

NEW ORLEANS— We said the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational was going to be a good one.
With 37 ranked teams in attendance from the most recent 60-team NCAA Division I Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll, how could it not?
Well, both championship races lived up to those high hopes.
QUICK LINKS: Meet Recap | Men’s Results | Women’s Results
Team titles went to the top-ranked men from Northern Arizona and the fourth-ranked women from Washington. Syracuse’s Justyn Knight and Boise State’s Brenna Peloquin earned the individual victories.
Here are four takeaways from a busy day of racing in Madison, Wisconsin.

NAU Proves It’s A Rightful No. 1

It was No. 1 versus No. 2 versus No. 3 for the first time in the short history of the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. Northern Arizona took on defending national champion Syracuse and BYU, a team that knocked off the Orange earlier this season.
We would soon learn if the Lumberjacks deserved their top billing, a spot they held down since the Cougars edged Syracuse at the Panorama Farms Invitational.
NAU staked its claim in a major way Friday as it unveiled its “A” team for the first time this season and clobbered the “A” teams from 11th-ranked Stanford, 3rd-ranked BYU and 2nd-ranked Syracuse, in that order. The Lumberjacks scored 78 points, compared to 118 for the Cardinal, 144 for the Cougars and 167 for the Orange.
Futsum Zienasellassie debuted for NAU and finished runner-up to Syracuse’s Justyn Knight. This was Zienasellassie’s first sanctioned XC race since 2014 and proved to be in top shape, which came as no surprise after his strong outdoor track season.
The Lumberjacks showed off their depth behind Zienasellassie as they finished 8th, 17th, 20th and 31st. Their 31.1-second spread was third behind 21st-ranked Colorado State and 29th-ranked Illinois.
NAU’s next test will come at the Mountain Region Championships and then eight days later at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Future Is Bright For Knight

For the second consecutive meet, Syracuse’s Justyn Knight proved that he’ll be a game contender come November — even more so than last year when he finished fourth — and that’s a scary proposition for three-time individual champion Edward Cheserek, Futsum Zienasellassie and Villanova’s Patrick Tiernan, among others.
A few weeks after breaking the course record with a hellacious final 3K at the Panorama Farms Invitational, Knight kicked down NC State’s George Parsons in the final 100 meters for his second win of the season. Knight crossed the finish line in 23:53.1, two seconds ahead of Zienasellassie, who finished runner-up. Parsons faded to fifth.
These past two races proved Knight has elite-level fitness and closing speed.
Will it be enough to take down The King come November 19?
We know it takes two things to beat Cheserek: Elite-level fitness and closing speed. If Knight can put those together in a month, we could see a new heir to the throne.

The Time Is Now For Washington

If the Women’s Championship Race at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational proved one thing, it’s that the national title will be up for grabs. Preseason favorite New Mexico isn’t what it was last year and current No. 1 Providence did little to instill confidence.
Why not Washington?
For the second consecutive meet, the Huskies proved their worth. This time they took down 17 other ranked teams, including the top-ranked Friars and No. 3 NC State, across 6K on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
Washington showed it has zero depth issues as it put its entire lineup inside the top-50. Amy Eloise-Neal and Charlotte Prouse went 4-5, with its next five runners finishing 34-36-45-48-50. Plus, the Huskies’ seventh finisher, Katie Knight, struggled a bit on Friday as her history shows she’s closer to No. 3 than the back of the scoring lineup.
We’ll learn a lot more about Washington over the next month as it will take on a stacked field at the Pac-12 Championships and West Region Championships before turning its attention to Terre Haute, Indiana and the NCAA DI Cross Country Championships.

Peloquin Shines Once Again

Brenna Peloquin finished 9th at NCAAs last year as a freshman.
It’s safe to say Peloquin wants much more after watching her past two races.
Peloquin showed a ton of moxie at both the Roy Griak Invitational and Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, both of which ended up as wins for the sophomore.
It was at the former where she broke Michigan’s Erin Finn, a tough runner in her own right (see: finishing last year’s NCAA meet with no shoes), and won by 11 seconds.
Peloquin tried to crush the spirits of Notre Dame’s Anna Rohrer and New Mexico’s Alice Wright— two other NCAA individual contenders — the same way she did Finn, but they fought back. Rohrer even took the lead from Peloquin at one point down the stretch.
Did Peloquin back down? No. She threw in another surge and pulled away for another major victory. Peloquin crossed the finish line in 20:00.8, one second ahead of Wright.
Over the course of two weeks she took down many of those same runners she’ll see in Terre Haute, Indiana on November 19. At this point, very few stand in her way between her and a national title (other than teammate Allie Ostrander, who has yet to run this season). She’ll see almost of them by NCAAs with the notable exception of Colorado’s Erin Clark, who finished 11th last year in Louisville, Kentucky.

Cowboy Cross Country Closes Regular Season with Win

Hassan Abdi
Bookmark and Share
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Hassan Abdi didn't disappoint in his long-anticipated debut for the Cowboy cross country team, taking second at the Penn State Open and leading Oklahoma State to its third-straight meet victory, Friday in Happy Valley.

The team win came against some of the best teams in the country with the likes of No. 10 Mississippi, 19th-ranked Virginia, No. 28 Virginia Tech and Big 12 rival Texas toeing the line at the PSU Cross Country Course.

A pair of Texas men took the lead early, but were run down by the pack, including Sylvester Barus and Abdi, among others before the 5K mark.

"Hassan ran an incredible race," coach Dave Smith said. "He's the real deal and he's a cross country guy who can do big things for us."

Barus and Abdi kept pace with the lead-pack, opening up the door for Josh Thompson, and leading the Pokes to a first place finish with 47 points, topping Mississippi by two points.

Abdi's run of 25:01 got him second overall, and Thompson earned a third-place finish with a 25:03 on the 5.2 mile course. Luis Martinez (11th), Anthoney Armstrong (14th), and Barus (17th), helped secure the win for the Cowboys.

"Josh ran his typical solid race," Smith said. "He and Sylvester have been going really hard in practice and that might be why Sylvester struggled a bit today. Luis and Anthoney had the best races of their cross country careers and I'm really proud of how they ran today."

Ole Miss senior MJ Erb won the individual title in 24:49.

Friday also marked a big day for another OSU newcomer in Michelle Magnani who suited up in orange for the first time in the women's 6K.

The Cowgirls surged back from fifth place with a kilometer to go to take third behind hosts and No. 8 Penn State (47), and No. 25 Mississippi (94), scoring 114 points behind a strong showing from Aurora Dybedokken who took ninth overall.

"I think our front three did a great job," Smith said. "Aurora, Molly and Michelle ran great, and Savannah is running than she's ever run, but I know and she knows she can run better."

Molly Sughroue took 12th and true freshman Magnani finished 13th in her first official race for OSU. Savannah Camacho crossed the line in 26th, while Anna Boyert came in at 54th to wrap up the Cowgirl top-five.

"We're still not where we want to be, and we're looking for a fifth runner," Smith said. "Our ace in the hole is Kaela, who has been looking great in practice recently, but we have to get some our girls back on track for the championship season. We still got a lot of effort out of the team today, and that's what I want to see."

Penn State's Tessa Barrett won the women's individual title followed by two other PSU runners in second and third, all but securing the team title for the eighth-ranked Nittany Lions.

The regular season is over and the real test begins for Oklahoma State in two weeks at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships where the Cowboys and Cowgirls seek to defend their conference titles from a season ago.

BERKELEY --- California's cross country teams performed at a pair of competitions on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Bears prepare for this month's Pac-12 Championships and next month's NCAA meets,

Cal sent groups of the NCAA Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind. - home of the NCAA Championships - while keeping some Bears local to run in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.

Both men's and women's teams in Indiana finished in the top 10 of their fields, with the women taking 8th overall and the men finishing 10th. In Santa Clara, the men's group was 7th overall while he Bears only sent a three-woman contingent to race locally.

Juniors Bethan Knights and Nuria Tio Peig had the best performances among the quartet of Cal teams running on Saturday. Tio Peig took 7th overall in the Bronco Invitational's 6K run with a time of 20:47.2 while Knights came in 8th in the 6K at Pre-Nationals (20:21.0). Sophomore Leland Jones paced the Bears in Santa Clara's 8K with an 11th place mark of 24:11.6 and Robert Brandt made it to the Pre-Nationals finish line 25th in 24:27.8.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Vanessa Fraser led a flurry of four Stanford finishers within 19 seconds, as the Cardinal women finished sixth at the Pre-National Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.

Racing on the 6-kilometer (3.73-mile) LaVern Gibson Course that will be used at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 19, Fraser placed 24th in 20:39.7 and was followed by Danielle Katz in 29th (20:45.9), Christina Aragon in 41st (20:53.6), and Ella Donaghu in 47th (20:58.5). No. 5 runner Abbie McNulty was 88th (21:20.0).

Stanford scored 229 points, placing just behind Arkansas with 225. No. 1 Colorado, led by winner Erin Clark, won with 93 points with Oregon second with 154.

Stanford raced without ace Elise Cranny, the 2014 Pac-12 runner-up, who "tweaked" her foot on Friday during the pre-meet shakeout, said coach Elizabeth DeBole. She added that Cranny was held out as a "precaution."

The race marked the collegiate debut of two big-time recruits, Christina Aragon and Ella Donaghu– two of the seven fastest 1,500-meter high school runners of all time. However, without Cranny, Stanford still has yet to race its top seven together. The next opportunity is at the Pac-12 Championships on Oct. 28 in Tucson, Arizona.

When Katz raced at Pre-Nats last year in Louisville, Kentucky, she was Stanford's No. 6 runner. Since then, she has emerged as one of the Cardinal's best, as a solid No. 3 behind Cranny and Fraser.

Overall, DeBole felt good about her team's performance.

"It was really positive," she said.

Wanjiru breaks Amsterdam course record

Surprise winner Daniel Wanjiru broke the course record at the TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday (16), taking almost three minutes off his PB to win the IAAF Gold Label Road Race in 2:05:19.
Ethiopia’s Meselech Melkamu secured her second marathon victory of the year, winning the women’s race in 2:23:21.
Wanjiru, still just 24 years old, made his marathon debut in Frankfurt two years ago, finishing seventh in 2:08:18. He looked set to improve on that in Amsterdam as he had set PBs earlier this year at 5000m, 10,000m, 10km and the half marathon, clocking times of 27:43 and 59:20 in the latter two disciplines.
With temperatures rising from 9C at the start to 12C at the finish and with barely any wind, the conditions in Amsterdam were almost perfect for marathon running. “And I’m very grateful for the perfect organisation,” said Wanjiru said. “At 10km I missed my bottle, but they always have another one available. That was very important.”
During the first five kilometres, covered in 14:57, the pace was a bit too slow and a big group of 16 athletes followed the three pacemakers: Reuben Maiyo, Albert Kangogo and Edwin Kiptoo. After a bit of chaos at the first drinking spot, the pace settled down.
With intermediate times of 29:46 at 10km and 44:41 at 15km, the pacemakers gave the elite men a great chance of attacking the course record of 2:05:36 set by Wilson Chebet in 2013. Three-time winner Chebet was in the first group, trying to defend his position as the fastest man in the Amsterdam Marathon.
The leading group of 14, plus the one remaining pacemaker, passed the half-way mark in 1:03:18. With the wind on their backs, they were on their way back from the bridge across the Amstel river in Ouderkerk towards the city centre and Amsterdam’s Olympic stadium.
Sammy Kitwara started to push and the rest followed him and Kiptoo. There was a little gap at 30km, reached in 1:29:44, but the athletes regrouped. Chebet soon began to drift behind though, and he was followed by defending champion and two-time winner Bernard Kipyego.
Kiptoo, the last pacemaker, stepped aside at 32km, leaving just three athletes out in front: Kitwara, Mule Wasihun and Geoffrey Kirui. Wanjiru then joined them a few moments later.
Kirui pushed the pace and Wasihun was the first victim. Going into the final five kilometres, Kipyego, Ezekiel Chebii and Marius Kimutai were trying to hunt down the leading trio.
Kitwara, whose PB of 2:04:28 made him the fastest man in the field, seemed to be on his way to a big victory. But he had no response to Wanjiru’s acceleration over the last few kilometres in the Vondelpark as the Kenyan took victory in 2:05:19.
“After 30 kilometres I felt very comfortable and I decided that I could go to the leading group,” he said. “At 35km I had closed the gap and shortly afterwards I thought, ‘I can win this race. Let me try it’.”
Kitwara finished second in 2:05:45, his fastest time since his second-place finish at the 2014 Chicago Marathon when he set his PB. “All the others were running after me in the second half of the race,” he said. “But I knew I had to take initiative to run a good time. It’s just a pity that I didn’t win.”
Kimutai was another surprise, taking third place in 2:05:47, taking more than three minutes off his personal best.
With eight men finishing within 2:07 and 10 men running faster than 2:08, this was the second-best marathon in history in terms of depth. Only the 2012 Dubai Marathon had more sub-2:07 and sub-2:08 finishers.

Convincing victory for Melkamu

The three favourites in the women’s race – Priscah Jeptoo, Meselech Melkamu and Meseret Hailu – ran alongside some men and official pacemakers during the early stages. Abebech Afework, Dibaba Kuma and Eunice Chumba were also in the leading pack and they passed 5km in 16:49.
The lead group was still together at 10km, reached in 33:45, 15km, which was covered in 50:37, and halfway, which they passed in 1:11:11.
Kuma was the first of the leading six who couldn’t cope with the pace. At 30km, reached in 1:40:59, just Melkamu, Chumba and Afework remained at the front with Hailu five seconds adrift and Jeptoo a further five seconds in arrears.
Melkamu was the strongest during the closing stages of the race. The 2009 world 10,000m silver medallist entered the stadium on her own and finished in 2:23:40.
“We were running in this big group, but when the pacemakers were gone, I decided that I had to break away,” she said. “And at 30km I was on my own.”
It was Melkamu’s third podium finish in a marathon this year, following her third-place finish in Dubai and her victory in Hamburg.
Afework finished second in 2:24:27 and Chumba was third in 2:25:00, taking more than six minutes off her PB.
Jeptoo, the 2013 London Marathon winner and the fastest woman in the field – albeit still recovering from serious injuries – was fourth in 2:25:57. Hailu, who set the course record when she won the 2012 Amsterdam Marathon in 2:21:09, was fifth in 2:27:50.
In the Dutch Championships, held in conjunction with the TCS Amsterdam Marathon, Khalid Choukoud and Ruth van der Meijden took the men’s and women’s titles respectively in 2:11:22 and 2:33:42.

Bronco Men Run Well, Freshmen Step up at Bronco Invitational

Bronco Men Run Well, Freshmen Step up at Bronco Invitational
SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Santa Clara cross country had balanced production from its veteran and freshmen runners as host of Saturday's Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park. Newcomer Jack Davidson took 35th place in the men's 8k Invitational race to and senior Hannah Wood took 68th place in the women's 6k Invitational to lead their respective teams.
Men's 8k Invitational

Davidson and Xander Olivero each bested the program's freshman 8k record, previously held by Ben Demaree '14. Ryan Greenough battled through illness to finish within seconds of Olivero. Junior Noah Westfall and freshman Fernando Gonzalez rounded out the Bronco scoring — Ben Davidson and Aaron Brumbaugh finished second behind Gonzalez.
As a team, the Broncos finished in 8th place of 18 Division I schools.
"Our men ran their best race of the year," Montoro said. "If we can get one of our 5-9 runners to close the gap on Noah, we will be where we need to be at the conference championships in two weeks.
"How well our freshmen competed was really exciting, but it was Ryan Greenough who really performed well today. I'm looking forward to a healthy Ryan at conference."

"We haven't yet had five women all click at the same time in a race this season. If we do, we can surprise some teams at WCCs. That will be our focus going forward."

Jeffrey Stalun ran a 26:33.4 in the men's 8k Open and Emma Eikelberner finished in 30th place with a 6k Open time of 23:16.8.
