17-time NCAA Champion Edward Cheserek Headlines TrackTown Tuesday
View this email in your browser
Hosted by TrackTown USA President Vin Lananna, the special guests at this month's TrackTown Tuesday will be UO student-athlete Edward Cheserek, three-time Olympian and U.S. record-holder Shannon Rowbury, Oregon Track Club Elite newcomer Andrew Osagie, and Pre Classic meet director Tom Jordan.
  • Oregon senior Edward Cheserek is the winningest track and field athlete in NCAA history with 17 national titles, a three-time finalist for The Bowerman award, and the reigning collegiate record-holder in the mile. The UO distance superstar will be joined on stage by UO associate head coach Andy Powell.

  • Nike Oregon Project's Shannon Rowbury will be accompanied by Pre Classic meet director Tom Jordan. Rowbury, who currently holds three American records, will be one of the headline performers at the 43rd annual Prefontaine Classic, May 26-27 at Hayward Field. She’s entered in the 1,500 meters, competing against a stacked field that includes seven runners with lifetime bests under 4 minutes. The Portland resident set the U.S. 1,500m record of 3:56.29 in 2015 and won the bronze medal in the 3,000m at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland.

  • OTC Elite’s Andrew Osagie is a native of Great Britain, and is scheduled to open his outdoor season at the UO Twilight Meet on May 5. Osagie, a two-time World Indoor bronze medalist in the 800 meters, set his personal best of 1 minute, 43.77 seconds in the famed 2012 London Olympic final.
The popular town hall meetings are free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a social hour, followed by the one-hour show at 7 p.m. Sasha Spencer Atwood, the director of external affairs at TrackTown USA, will be the emcee.

Event Highlights

For the U.S. men and women who set the track world on fire last summer, the road from Rio de Janeiro to London passes directly through Sacramento.
The Brazilian coastal city was the site of the 2016 Olympic Games, where the United States collected 32 medals in track and field, nearly triple the number of the second-strongest nation. London is the site of the 2017 IAAF World Championships.
To get to London, U.S. athletes must punch their tickets at the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships, to be held June 22-25 at Sacramento State. For most, it means finishing in the top three of their events at Hornet Stadium. For a select few who have wild-card selections to the World Championships, they’re still required to show up and compete in Sacramento.
In other words, the field of nearly 1,000 athletes in Sacramento will be the strongest assembled in Sacramento since the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials. In fact, two of the biggest names expected in Sacramento this summer had their coming-out parties at those 2004 Olympic Trials – sprinters Allyson Felix and Justin Gatlin.
Overall, though, the current elite of U.S. track trends much younger than Gatlin, 35, and Felix, 31. Brenda Rollins, the 100-meter hurdles winner in Rio de Janeiro, is 25. Olympic shot put champion Ryan Crouser is 24.  Keni Harrison, the 100-meter hurdler who failed to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team but broke the 28-year-old world record two weeks later by clocking 12.20 seconds in London, is just 24.
And the youngest members of last year’s U.S. Olympic team – high jumper Vashti Cunningham and 40-meter hurdler Sydney McLaughlin - will still be teenagers when they arrive in Sacramento. (McLaughlin doesn’t turn 18 until August.)
2014 USATF 3
Combine the veterans and the up-and-comers with a deep pool of experienced competitors in the late 20s and it’s safe to say that the momentum from the 2016 Olympics should carry over into the post-Olympic year.
The Junior Championships will be held in conjunction with the main event.  NBC will provide live coverage from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, and Sunday, June 25.
Here are some of the main story lines heading into what will be Sacramento’s seventh national championship meet since 1968:
Glut of great hurdlers
Harrison was the clear Olympic favorite until she stumbled to a sixth-place finish at the Olympic Trials. No matter: Rollins, Nia Ali and Kristi Carlin finished 1-2-3 in Rio de Janeiro, the first-ever Olympic sweep in U.S. women’s track and field. With warm weather and a fast track, the world record could be threatened in Sacramento. Harrison (12.20) and Rollins (12.26) rank first and equal-fourth on the all-time list.
Devon Allen was a two-sport standout at Oregon who recently gave up football to run track professionally. Allen won the 110-meter high hurdles at the 2014 USATF Championships in Sacramento and placed fifth in the Olympics.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Kerron Clement and Dalilah Muhammad won the men’s and women’s gold medals in Brazil. Sacramento fans may recall Clement’s win at the 2005 NCAA Championships back in 2005.
Spotlight on the sprints
2014 USATF sprints
Sacramento crowds love the sprints, and this should be an interesting year. Usain Bolt of Jamaica has lorded over the sprints for the last decade, but he says this will be his final season. Gatlin has been Bolt’s main challenger over the last several years and remains the top American sprinter until someone proves otherwise. Trayvon Bromell is up and down, but he gave Gatlin a run for his money at the Olympic Trials and is just 21 years old.
Despite being shut out of the medals in Brazil, U.S. hopes in the men’s 200 meters are bright with Noah Lyles and Michael Norman. Weeks after graduating from high school, Lyles and Norman placed fourth and fifth at the Olympic Trials. Lyles skipped college to turn professional; Norman is a freshman at USC.
Tori Bowie emerged as the top U.S. female sprinter in 2016, winning three medals at the Olympics, including a gold in the 4x100 relay. English Gardner won the Olympic Trials in 10.74, making her the seventh-fastest sprinter in history.
Felix, the 2012 Olympic champion at 200 meters, won three medals in Rio de Janeiro, giving her nine Olympic medals for her career, the most in U.S. women’s track history. It remains to be seen whether she’ll defend her 2015 world title in the 400 or contest the 200 instead.
King of the metric mile
Former Oregon standout Matt Centrowitz became the first U.S. male to win the Olympic 1,500 meters in 108 years when his 50.5-second last lap in Rio de Janeiro brought him the gold medal. Centrowitz doesn’t run super-fast times on the European circuit, but he’s an extraordinary big-meet runner with a great finishing kick.
In the women’s 1,500, Olympic bronze medalist Jenny Simpson and Shannon Rowbury, the U.S. record holder at 3:56.29, will renew their fierce rivalry unless Rowbury chooses to run the 5,000 instead.
Golden shot putters
This marks the first time that the U.S. has the reigning men’s and women’s Olympic shot putters. Crouser broke the Olympic record by throwing 73 feet, 10 ¾ inches in Rio, and Michelle Carter became the first American woman to win the Olympics with a national-record 67-8¼. Carter, the daughter of former San Francisco 49ers great Michael Carter, won the Capitol Shot at the 2014 nationals in Sacramento.  Joe Kovacs won the men’s Capitol Shot in 2014 and claimed the silver medal in Rio.
More gold in long jump
Just as Sacramento will showcase the Olympic gold medalists in the shot, the same holds true in the long jump. Jeff Henderson and Tianna Bartoletta won the men’s and women’s long jump in Rio, Bartoletta winning a stirring duel with the 2012 Olympic champion, Brittney Reese.
High-flying vaulters
The pole vault is always one of the most popular events, and there should plenty to cheer in Sacramento. Sam Kendricks won Olympic bronze in the men’s vault, and Sandi Morris claimed silver in the women’s event before becoming just the third woman to clear 5 meters (16-4¾) in a post-Olympic meet. Jenn Suhr, the 2012 Olympic champion, has also exceeded 5 meters.
Local flavor
Kate Grace’s career took off last year when she moved to Sacramento to train with the NorCal Distance Project. Grace won the 800 meters at the Olympic Trials and reached the Olympic final in Brazil. Grace’s training partner, Kim Conley, qualified for her second Olympic team in the 5,000 meters.
2014 USATF 2
Stephanie Brown-Trafton of Galt put off retirement after narrowly missing out on her fourth Olympic team in the discus. Brown-Trafton won an Olympic gold medal in 2008.

NCAA & NJCAA Outdoor National Athletes of the Week (May 2)

NEW ORLEANS– Collegiate records were shaking in their boots this past weekend.
That’s because a trio of athletes took aim at them and fell just short of the lofty marks.
Nonetheless, two of the National Athletes of the Week honored Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) notched marks that were No. 2 in collegiate history: Emmanuel Korir in the 800 and Aleia Hobbs in the 100.
Here are the 10 athletes honored by the USTFCCCA, which include Hobbs and Korir.
Find out more about these athletes by clicking their names or scrolling below.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 10 collegiate outdoor track & field athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and the two in NJCAA).
Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.

NCAA DIVISION I MEN – Emmanuel Korir, UTEP

Freshman | Mid-Distance
Iten, Kenya
Stop us if you heard this before: Emmanuel Korir is fast.
One week after he ripped off a sub-45 second open 400 (44.67), Korir returned to the track at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge in Berkeley, California, and nearly rewrote collegiate history.
Korir clocked a time of 1:43.73 over 800 meters, narrowly missing Donavan Brazier’s collegiate record of 1:43.55 that he set last year at the NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It’s even more impressive considering Korir won by eight seconds and negative split the race in the process (52.5, 51.23).
How crazy would that be if Brazier’s record doesn’t even last a full year, especially knowing that it took someone (Brazier) 50 years to eclipse Jim Ryun’s previous all-time mark?
If you want to know how special Korir is, take one look at the NCAA DI Descending Order List. It’s there that you’ll find him ranked 1st at 800 meters and 3rd at 400 meters as one of three men this season to go sub-45 seconds during the collegiate season (Fred Kerley and Michael Cherry).

NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN – Aleia Hobbs, LSU

Junior | Sprints
New Orleans, Louisiana
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a woman who had a better weekend than Aleia Hobbs.
Hobbs started things off by anchoring LSU’s 4×100 relay team to a collegiate record-tying time of 42.12. It wasn’t an easy run for Hobbs in the slightest as she ran into a stiff headwind on the home stretch at Bernie Moore Track Stadium. When she crossed the finish line, however, it was clear Oregon’s women have company on the 4×100 landscape.
Less than two hours later, Hobbs returned to the track for the open 100 and dazzled. Hobbs ran 10.85, the fastest low-altitude time in collegiate history and the 2nd fastest time in collegiate history regardless of conditions. No one has come closer than Hobbs to breaking Dawn Sowell’s collegiate record of 10.78A in the event, which was set back in 1989.

NCAA DIVISION II MEN – Jordan Crayon, Ashland

Senior | Throws
Toledo, Ohio
Jordan Crayon added his name to the NCAA Division II outdoor collegiate record book over the weekend with his solid outing in the hammer throw at the Ashland Alumni Open.
The senior from Toledo, Ohio, posted the top hammer throw in NCAA Division II this year at 69.87m (229-3), a mark that was the 5th-best on the week behind only 4 throws from Cornell’s Rudy Winkler. Better than that though was the fact that Crayon’s throw makes him the 6th-best performer in the history of the event during the NCAA Division II outdoor season.
After placing 3rd at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships a year ago, Crayon could be on his way to his first hammer throw national championship.

NCAA DIVISION II WOMEN – Stachia Reuwsaat, Chadron State

Senior | Sprints/Jumps
Black Hawk, South Dakota
What a week for NCAA Division II women’s track & field athletes. There were some superb performances, including Tia-Adana Belle’s win in the 400 hurdles at the Penn Relays and Mel Hurl’s annihilation of the competition in the shot put at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational.
But historically, none lived up to Stachia Reuwsaat’s outing in the long jump at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational. The senior from Black Hawk, South Dakota, recorded the top mark in NCAA Division II this year in the event, leaping 6.61m (21-8¼) to etch her name in 3rd in the NCAA Division II outdoor collegiate record book.
In Irvine, California, over the weekend, Reuwsaat defeated the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Champion, Ayana Gales of UNLV, and 2017 WAC Indoor Champion, Kayla Wilson of Grand Canyon, as well as 24 other NCAA Division I athletes. In all of collegiate outdoor track & field this year, only 4 NCAA Division I athletes have posted further leaps in 2017.

NCAA DIVISION III MEN – Luke Winder, North Central (Ill.)

Junior | Pole Vault
Joilet, Illinois
No man has vaulted higher than Luke Winder during an NCAA Division III outdoor season.
Winder made sure of that this past weekend at the Drake Relays.
Competing in the Division I section against a number of other talented vaulters, Winder was the last man standing once the bar went up to 5.35m (17-6½). Winder went over that bar on his first try, while Sioux Falls’ Scott Greenman fouled on all three of his attempts.
Once he had the event title square in his pocket, Winder pushed the bar up to 5.53m (18-1¾). It was on his 3rd attempt that he got over and set a PR and the NCAA DIII season-long record in the process (Allegheny’s Jeremy Scott notched a best of 5.55m (18-2½) at the 2002 NACAC Championships).

NCAA DIVISION III WOMEN – Wadeline Jonathas, UMass Boston

Freshman | Sprints
Gonaives, Haiti
Only five women in NCAA Division III history have gone sub-23.80 in the 200.
Only two of those didn’t have a strong wind at their back.
One of them is NCAA DIII record holder Rhondale Jones. The other is Wadeline Jonathas after this past weekend’s action at the NEAC Championships.
Jonathas clocked a wind-legal 23.79 in a winning effort to move up to 5th on the NCAA DIII all-time chart in the event. The native of Gonaives, Haiti, now trails Jones (23.72), Denise Shotwell (23.73w), Amber James (23.73w) and Musu Jackson-Buckner (23.75w).
We could see an incredible race between Jonathas and several others at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships later this month.
Strong consideration for National Athlete of the Week was also given to Maya Weigel of Pomona-Pitzer. Weigel ran the 10th fastest time in NCAA DIII history over 1500 meters (4:22.83) and moved up to 2nd on the NCAA DIII Descending Order List. She is also No. 1 on the NCAA DIII DOL at 5000 meters.

NJCAA DIVISION I MEN – Keitavious Walter, Hinds CC

Freshman | Sprints
Ruston, Louisiana
No one in the country was faster than Keitavious Walter in the 200 meters this past weekend. Nobody.
Walter, a freshman at Hinds CC, notched a wind-legal time of 20.43 in the 200 meters at the Southern Miss Open, topping this week’s top-10 collegiate marks list. Additionally, his time is faster than any NCAA Division II or NCAA Division III men’s sprinter and would be tied for 12th in the nation at the NCAA Division I level.
Walter wasn’t done with that performance, though. The native of Ruston, Louisiana, also posted a 10.21 in the 100 meters, ranking 4th on the week, as well as 4th in all of NJCAA Division I on the season.

NJCAA DIVISION I WOMEN – Zakiya Denoon, Monroe College

Sophomore | Sprints
Belle Garden, Trinidad & Tobago
Zakiya Denoon already owned the top 200 meter mark in all of NJCAA Division I this season. But, that wasn’t good enough for her.
The native of Trinidad & Tobago ran a blistering 11.31 in the 100 meters at the Penn Relays, placing 3rd overall ahead of athletes from Auburn, Oklahoma, Clemson and North Carolina State, amongst others. Denoon’s mark is good for 2nd on the NJCAA Division I descending order list this year, and also ranked 6th on the week by any collegiate athlete.
The sophomore also ran in the 4×100 relay for Monroe College at the Penn Relays, posting the 5th-best time in NJCAA Division I this season at 46.03.

NJCAA DIVISION III MEN – Jake Caruso, Rowan-Gloucester (N.J.)

Freshman | Distance
Berlin, New Jersey
Jake Caruso has sat on the cusp of picking up a National Athlete of the Week honor for a few weeks. This week, he finally broke through.
The Berlin, New Jersey, native ran a 4:08.25 in the 1500 meters at the Lions Invitational for the top mark on the NJCAA Division III descending order list this year. This weekend marked the 2nd-consecutive weekend in which Caruso set a personal-best mark in the event.
On the season, Caruso also owns the top 5000 meter time in NJCAA Division III at 15:47.03.

NJCAA DIVISION III WOMEN – Casey Pedone, Suffolk CC

Sophomore | Sprints/Jumps
Port Jefferson Station, New York
Sophomore Casey Pedone had a solid showing at the Lions Invitational for Suffolk CC this past weekend, recording a 5.45m (17-10¾) in the long jump for the 2nd-best mark in NJCAA Division III on the season.
Pedone won the event title – the 1st of her career – and did so by defeating NCAA Division I athletes from Villanova, Rider and Farleigh Dickinson. Pedone also competed in the 4×400 relay for Suffolk CC that finished 4th at the meet with a time of 4:38.68.

Ivana Spanovic teleconference highlights – IAAF Diamond League

With just three days to go until the start of the 2017 IAAF Diamond League series, world and Olympic long jump bronze medallist and 2016 Diamond Trophy winner Ivana Spanovic spoke to the media via a teleconference on Tuesday (2).
In addition to her Diamond League laurels last season, the 26-year-old Serbian also won medals at the three biggest events of the year: bronze at the Olympic Games, silver at the IAAF World Indoor Championships and gold at the European Championships. Earlier this year she retained her European indoor title on home soil in Belgrade with a lifetime best of 7.24m, the longest indoor leap since 1989.
Spanovic will make her 2017 IAAF Diamond League debut at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on 27 May. Ahead of that appearance, Spanovic recalled the early days of her competitive career and shared some of her thoughts and expectations for the 2017 season. Here are some of the highlights.

On how difficult it was to resume training after her emotional victory at the European Indoor Championships in March:

It was really tough when the competition ended because it was an indoor championship and in front of my Serbian crowd. There was a lot of expectation so I knew that I had to do something more than just win. I knew that I had to do something really big. And I did. There was really good positive energy from the people there. I think it was also really good preparation for the outdoor season.
Afterwards I was really tired. I had the flu after that because I was emotionally and physically empty, so I had some time to relax. Then I started to train again. And for now, I’m really satisfied on how I’ve worked since then and I cannot wait to start with the season.

On the importance to of testing herself regularly against the best jumpers in the world during the Diamond League season:

I like good competitions. I love to go into a competition where I know that I need to jump farther, where I need to feel 100% in everything that day.
I know that there are a few girls who can jump pretty far, and it will be pretty exciting to jump in Eugene. It will be my first competition and I know that I won’t be able to jump 7.20m or a result like that, but I’ll be on my level like at the start of every season and I’m just going to try and beat my PB from the (debut) competition of each (previous) year.

On her chief competitors in 2017:

Besides the Americans (three-time world champion Brittney Reese and world and Olympic champion Tianna Bartoletta), the girls who I expect to be at a high level will be Shara Proctor and Lorraine Ugen. (Lorraine) jumped really good this indoor season and the previous one, and I know what kind of motivation a home crowd (provides), and I expect from them to jump more than seven metres. But for gold, I think much more than that will be needed.

On the changes in the IAAF Diamond League format this year:

I’m not really happy that we (women long jumpers) have two Diamond League meetings less this year. There will always be some changes and that’s okay. Last year was a little bit tough because we didn’t have time to take a pause during the series. It was going too fast. But the rules are the same for all of us and we’ll find a way to be the best in our competitions.

On the secret of her season-long consistency:

(Laughs). I really don’t know but I really enjoy everything about my training, about my rest, about eating what I need to eat because I know that will bring me the extra centimetres. And I’m enjoying every single day and every single competition.
This year is 20 years after my first training in track and field. Now I can say that I’m finally where I want to be.

On her experiences in age group competition, where she won world youth silver in 2007 and world junior gold in 2008:

I just remember that those days went by really, really fast. Suddenly I was a senior in the water with really big sharks who already had so many medals from major championships, and big jumps, and I was such a small fish that it was really hard for me to just find myself there.
There were a few years that were really, really hard but I knew what I needed to do. Just to work harder and harder and not think too much about my emotions and feeling that I’m not the best. I just had to keep fighting for my dreams.
After the first junior medal it became so much easier to just to be myself and do what I do best. Back in those days I remember those competitions as when I met and made a lot friends, and it was fun. And there was no pressure.

Erasing world records set before 2005 is a cynical PR charade that will do nothing but punish the innocent

  • Svein Arne Hansen has put forward the idea of erasing pre-2005 world records
  • The move is intended to clear up the name and integrity of athletics
  • Under this move the likes of Jonathan Edwards would lose remarkable records
  • It is outrageously unfair if an athlete who has never used performance enhancing drugs is now wiped from history

The man behind the ill-conceived idea to erase any athletics world record set before 2005 is Svein Arne Hansen.

European Athletics endorses record ‘revolution’ plan

The European Athletics Council has accepted a project team’s recommendations that would lead to the rewriting of the world and European records lists.
The project team’s report, which calls for higher technical standards, increased doping control measures and new personal integrity requirements for record holders, will be forwarded to the IAAF with the recommendation that the two organisations coordinate the implementation of new record ratification rules.
Speaking after the Council’s meeting in Paris, from 28 to 30 April, President Svein Arne Hansen said: “Performance records that show the limits of human capabilities are one of the great strengths of our sport, but they are meaningless if people don’t really believe them.
“What we are proposing is revolutionary, not just because most world and European records will have to be replaced but because we want to change the concept of a record and raise the standards for recognition to a point where everyone can be confident that everything is fair and above board.”
The standards proposed by the project team include that world and European records can only be recognised if 1) the performance is achieved at competitions on a list of approved international events where the highest standards of officiating and technical equipment can be guaranteed, 2) the athlete has been subject to an agreed number of doping control tests in the months leading up to the performance, and 3) the doping control sample taken after the record is stored and available for retesting for 10 years.
The project team also recommended that record recognition be withdrawn at any time if the athlete commits a doping or integrity violation, even if it does not directly impact the record performance.
Current records not established in accordance with the agreed standards will remain on the all-time list but recognition will be transferred to performances that meet the criteria.
“It’s a radical solution for sure, but those of us who love athletics are tired of the cloud of doubt and innuendo that has hung over our records for too long,” said Hansen. “We need decisive action to restore credibility and trust and I want to thank the project team, led by Pierce O’Callaghan, for their great work in showing us a way forward.
“This will now go to the IAAF Council Meeting in August and on behalf of European Athletics I will be encouraging them to adopt this proposal,” said Hansen. “In the meantime we will be checking with our legal advisors to make sure the new rules will stand up to any challenges that might come.”
IAAF President Sebastian Coe, who attended the final session of the meeting together with other European members of the IAAF Council, said: “I like this because it underlines that we [the governing bodies] have put into place doping control systems and technology that are more robust and safer than 15 or even 10 years ago.
“Of course, for this to be adopted for world records by the IAAF it needs global approval from all area associations. There will be athletes, current record holders, who will feel that the history we are recalibrating will take something away from them but I think this is a step in the right direction and if organised and structured properly we have a good chance of winning back credibility in this area.”
The European Athletics Council also accepted recommendations to revoke a number of European Athlete of the Year Awards and European Athletics Coaching Awards, subject to legal review.
The Project Team Report on the credibility of European Records can be viewed in English, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

PHILADELPHIA– The Stanford women's 4x800 relay team finished third at the 123rd Penn Relays at Franklin Field on Saturday.

Malika Waschmann made a move with 250 meters left on the third leg to give Stanford the lead on the final exchange. Oliva Baker, on the anchor, held it until the final 300 meters when she was overtaken by Villanova's Siofra Cleirigh Buttner. Penn State's Danae Rivers slipped ahead of Baker on a late move for second.

Stanford's team of Rebecca Mehra, Christina Aragon, Waschmann, and Baker ran 8:26.89 in a bid for the school's first victory in the event since 2005. However, this year's team ran five seconds faster than the 2005 squad.

Aragon, a freshman, found herself in a duel with Villanova's fifth-year senior Angel Piccirillo on the second leg. On a crowded first exchange, Stanford was fifth and Villanova sixth before Piccirillo (2:03.62) and Aragon (2:03.99) uncoiled the fastest splits of the race to string out the pack.

Mehra ran 2:08.77 to open, and Waschmann split 2:07.48 while moving Stanford from second. Baker completed the race with a 2:06.67 split.

The Stanford men's 4x400 relay team ran a season-best 3:10.53 to place seventh in the college final. Frank Kurtz anchored Stanford in 46.39 – the fourth-fastest split of the 36 in the race. Isaiah Brandt-Sims split 47.30 on the third leg for the Cardinal. It was the team's best of the year by 1.2 seconds.

Brady back in form

AUSTIN, TexasDaniel Brady has raced the 400-meter hurdles three times this season, and his time has dropped substantially his past two meets.

The Stanford junior ran a season-best 52.78 to capture third at the Longhorn Invitational – a 0.43 improvement upon his time at the Cardinal Classic last week and 2.06 seconds faster than his season opener at the Big Meet against Cal.

Brady is back in the territory of his personal best of 51.93, which he hit while placing third at the Canadian Championships last year.

In the men's pole vault, Stanford redshirt decathlete Harrison Williams cleared 17-0 ¾ (5.20 meters) to win Section B. It was his first competitive vault since going 17-7 (5.36m) in the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

Williams passed at 17-2 (5.25m) and 17-4 (5.30m) before three unsuccessful tries at 17-6 (5.35m).

Stanford's top finisher Saturday was Lena Giger, who was second in the shot put at 54-3 ¾ (16.55m). Giger briefly took the lead on her opening throw, of 54-3 ¾ (16.55m), but Texas freshman Elena Bruckner, out of San Jose's Valley Christian High, immediately answered at 54-8 ¼ (16.67m) on her first attempt and it held up for the victory.

In the women's long jump, Stanford junior Daryth Gayles reached 20-6 ¼ (6.25m), a personal record for all conditions, to place third. The jump was aided by a 2.7 meters per second wind, just 0.7 over the allowable limit for record purposes. But the jump will count toward NCAA West Prelims qualifying. The mark came on her sixth and final jump.

Dinger, Buttinger get view of historic race

BERKELEY, Calif.
– Stanford's Tai Dinger and Scott Buttinger were part of history Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Edwards Stadium. In the Lon Spurrier men's invitational 800, Dinger and Buttinger were in the race won by UTEP freshman Emmanuel Korir in 1:43.73 – the No. 2 time in collegiate history.

Korir ran a 52.47 first lap and extended his two-second lead to an eight-second victory with a negative split of 51.25. The time is second in collegiate outdoor competition only to Texas A&M's Donavan Brazier, who ran 1:43.55 to win the NCAA Championships last year. Among all collegians in extended seasons, including international competition, only Joaquim Cruz, Paul Ereng, Brazier, and Mike Boit have run faster than Korir of Kenya.

Dinger was fourth in the race in 1:52.13 and Buttinger was sixth in 1:52.88.

In the women's 1,500, Stanford senior Danielle Katz ran a personal best of 4:22.38 to place third in the Marilyn Davis invitational race.
