14 MAY 2017 Report Columbia, USA
Competing in just his second outdoor 400m of the season, NCAA indoor champion Fred Kerley smashed his PB and rocketed up the world all-time list when running 44.09 at the SEC (Southeastern Conference) Championships in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Texas A&M student recorded that time in the heats, running a strong but controlled race before easing off slightly before the finish line. On Saturday (13), the final day of the three-day championships, Kerley won the final in 44.30. Jamaican duo Nathon Allen and Akeem Bloomfield, both representing Auburn University, set PBs of 44.52 and 44.81 in second and third respectively.
Kerley’s 44.09 clocking elevates him to equal 17th on the world all-time list, equal 11th on the US all-time list, and second on the collegiate all-time list.
“Winning is always fun, but at the end of the day you’re still learning from every win,” said Kerley. “Every win is not necessarily a perfect race. In the final I didn’t adjust anything for the weather, but I was racing instead of just running my race today.
Kerley later teamed up with his younger brother Mylik to win the 4x400m for Texas A&M in a world-leading 3:00.72. Auburn University finished second, thanks to a 43.48 anchor from 400m runner-up Allen.
On a good weekend for Texas A&M, Grenada’s Lindon Victor broke his own collegiate record in the decathlon with a world-leading 8539.
He was close to his lifetime bests in the opening two events, clocking 10.64 in the 100m and leaping 7.35m in the long jump. He managed 15.18m in the shot put and cleared 2.05m in the high jump before rounding out his opening day with 48.74 in the 400m.
Victor opened the second day with a PB of 14.45 (1.8m/s) in the 110m hurdles and followed it with a discus PB of 55.22m, the best ever throw by a collegiate decathlete. He then set a Grenadian record of 4.70m with a third-time clearance in the pole vault and hurled a season’s best of 68.97m in the javelin.
The 24-year-old rounded out his SEC Championships title defence by clocking 4:55.91 in the 1500m, bringing his tally to a Grenadian record of 8539.
Victor was the lone decathlete to surpass 8000 points in the competition. Estonia’s Karl Saluri, representing the University of Georgia, placed second with 7948.
“It’s always a good thing when you win and break a collegiate record,” said Victor. “I still think there is a lot to improve upon in the decathlon. I’m still disappointed in some of my events and really happy in others. It’s typical of the decathlon, though, to up and down. It’s all about having a level head and refocusing every time.”
During his Texas Relays victory in March, when Victor set a collegiate record of 8472, he established the best collegiate first-day score with 4516 points. This weekend he produced the best collegiate second-day score with 4174 points.
“It shows my versatility,” said Victor. “If I have a bad first day, I know I can come back and have a good second day. Now it’s a matter of putting both of them together. If you add together my best two days, then I have a score of 8690.
“Nationals (NCAA Championships) is going to be a lot harder than this. There are some really good guys in the NCAA and I’m not going to take my competition lightly. I think there are three or four guys who could break this collegiate record, so it’s going to be really fun competing against these guys.”
The Tennessee student won the 100m in 9.97 (0.6m/s) from British LSU student Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake. Exactly one hour later, he won the 200m in a PB of 19.98 (0.6m/s), once again finishing ahead of Mitchell-Blake (20.09).
The 21-year-old becomes just the eighth man in history to go sub-10 and sub-20 on the same day.
Ja'Mari Ward smashed his lifetime best in the long jump, coming from behind to take the victory with a sixth-round leap of 8.13m (0.0m/s). His jump is the best mark by an U20 US athlete since 2009.
The women's event was won by Quanesha Burks with a world-leading 6.82m (0.2m/s).
Elsewhere, Decathlon specialist Devon Williams smashed his personal best in the 110m hurdles, first with 13.52 (0.7m/s) in the heats and then 13.37 (0.2m/s) to win the final.
After an 11.02 clocking in the 100m heats, LSU's Aleia Hobbs won the final in 11.12. In between those rounds, she anchored her team to a convincing 42.56 victory in the 4x100m.

Coleman achieves historic double
Double NCAA indoor champion Christian Coleman once again showed his versatility across sprint disciplines, becoming the first collegiate sprinter to achieve a one-day sub-10-second and sub-20-second double in the 100m and 200m.The Tennessee student won the 100m in 9.97 (0.6m/s) from British LSU student Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake. Along with the 13 event champions, several of Saturday’s preliminary heats set up some intriguing storylines heading into Sunday finals.

- OREGON’s Raevyn Rogers is seeking a third Pac-12 crown in the women’s 800-meter run, but was the second-best qualifier (2:06.67) behind Ducks’ teammate Brooke Feldmeier (2:06.05).
- Two-time defending Pac-12 champion Marcus Chambers of OREGON posted the top qualifying time in the men’s 400-meter dash at 46.55.
- WASHINGTON STATE’s CJ Allen will go for a third league title in the men’s 110-meter hurdles after recording the best heat time of 50.83.

A Pac-12 Title For Peter Simon

Simon led the field through four rounds before USC's Nicholas Ponzio moved ahead. When it came time for his last final throw, Simon needed an improvement of seven inches to retake the lead and win the event. He did that and more, with his mark being the best for a Cal shot putter since Rhuben Williams' 64-9.75 in 2004. Simon's previous PR was 63-8.25 set at the Big Meet earlier this season. Dave Porath, in 1981, was the last Cal thrower to win the shot put at the conference meet.
"Peter's last winning throw was a big PR in an epic competition that saw the order change throughout the day," Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval said. "To win it all on his last throw just after Nick Ponzio's PR was spectacular."
Simon was not the only Bear to score in the shot as McKay Johnson took fourth with a throw of 60-7.25.
Two other Bears also earned their spots on the podium Saturday. First, Trent Brendel came from the middle of the pack and claimed runner-up status in the men's 10,000 meters with his time of 29:20.52. Then, Bethan Knights took third in the women's 10K, crossing the line in 33:30.13.
In the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, Takeshi Okada (8:59.66) and Max Leach (9:04.33) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Overall, the Cal men stand in third place with 36 points, which also includes Tyler Brendel's third-place showing in the decathlon from last weekend. The Cal women have six points from Knights with more opportunities on the horizon.
While a number of Pac-12 champions were determined on Saturday, much of the day was spent on qualifying heats for Sunday finals. Leading the way for the Bears is Ashtyn Davis, who posted the fastest time of the day in the men's 110-meter hurdles, running 13.65. The time equaled his PR, but the wind was just over the allowable (2.3 mps).
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Paramveer Chohan posted the second-fastest qualifying time (52.42), and he will be joined in the final by Connor Meech, who was clocked in 52.48. Thomas Joyce (3:46.83) and Garrett Corcoran (PR 3;46.98 will be racing Sunday in the men's 1500 meters, Josh Lewis advanced in the 800 meters (1:51.95), and Cal's 4x100 relay qualified for the final.
Among the Cal women, Jordyn Colter (2:07.02) and Rebecca Croft (2:07.78) reached the 800-meter final, as did Marissa Williams in the 1500 meters (4:24.37). In addition, the 4x100 relay qualified fifth.
Two Bears competed in finals, with Megan Bordes taking 10th in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:53.05) and Ashley Anderson finishing 15th in the long jump (18-1.75w).
"Overall, it was a good day with most who should have advanced doing so under some intermittent heavy rain and cold throughout the day," Sandoval said.
On Sunday, field events get underway at 12:45 p.m., with running events starting at 3 p.m. The Pac-12 Network will televise the meet live from 3-6:30 p.m.

USTFCCCA News & Notes
![]()
We saw an all-out assault on the overall collegiate record book, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III record books by athletes across the nation.
You may see a lot of familiar names as National Athletes of the Week and that’s because they’re doing major things.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 10 collegiate outdoor track & field athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and the two in NJCAA).
Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.
Atlanta, Georgia
There was no shortage of incredible efforts this past weekend in NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track & Field ranging from Lindon Victor bettering his collegiate record in the decathlon to Fred Kerley running the 2nd fastest time in collegiate history over 400 meters and everything in between that we didn’t see in Columbia, South Carolina, at the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Then there is what Christian Coleman did.
This past weekend at the SEC Championships, Coleman became just the 8th man in world history – and the 1st man in collegiate history – to go sub-10 seconds in the 100 and sub-20 seconds in the 200 in the same day.
Coleman opened things up with a wind-legal time of 9.97 in the 100 to beat LSU’s Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake by .02.
Not too long after, Coleman doubled back in the 200 and clocked a wind-legal time of 19.98. He beat his LSU rival once again, but this time by 11 one-hundredths of a second.
Both of those efforts might have left him *right* outside the all-time top-10, but rest assured he’ll have a few more chances to get his name written down in history.
Westchester, New York
Since 1988, only one woman had run a wind-legal time of 22.17 or better over 200 meters – and that’s the collegiate record holder herself, Dawn Sowell. It was back in 1989 that Sowell clocked a time of 22.04A at the NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Well, Sowell has some company and might lose her collegiate record in the near future if Deajah Stevens has her say.
This past weekend at the Pac-12 Outdoor Championships, Stevens destroyed the competition in the 200 meters with a time of 22.09. Stevens became just the 2nd woman in collegiate history to go sub-22.10 in the 200 (3rd, if you’re counting wind-aided marks, which we’re not).
That was just one of the event titles for Stevens at Historic Hayward Field as she also captured 1st place in the 100 and helped the Ducks’ 4×100 team to Pac-12 glory.
Blue Springs, Missouri
There’s nothing like having an outstanding performance a last chance qualifier to guarantee your spot at the national meet. Just ask Pittsburg State’s Kai Miller.
Miller, a sophomore from Blue Springs, Missouri, tied for the top pole vault mark in NCAA Division II on the season, clearing 5.31m (17-5). His mark automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in just a few weeks, and was the 1st automatic qualifying mark by Miller on the year after only clearing 5.00m just twice on the season.
Should Miller be able to replicate this performance at the national meet in just a few short weeks, he could find himself on the podium when the dust settles.
Eaton, Colorado
Mel Herl wrapped up her final regular season in grand fashion this past week.
Not only did she break RMAC Outdoor Championship meet records in all 3 of her throws early in the week, but she also became the 4th-best performer in NCAA Division II outdoor history in the hammer throw, recording a toss of 63.62m (208-9) that is good for the top spot on the descending order list.
The native of Eaton, Colorado, pulled double-duty on the week, too, as she also competed at the Concordia (Neb.) Last Chance Meet this past Friday. While there, Herl recorded the top shot put mark on the season in NCAA Division II at 16.92m (55-6¼), a mark that also makes her the 5th-best performer in the event in NCAA Division II outdoor history.
Green Bay, Wisconsin
The top-10 list at 5000 meters in the NCAA Division III record book had one notable absence for a while and that’s the name of Ian LaMere, who owned the top mark at 10000 meters.
That all changed this past weekend as LaMere threw down a time of 13:56.76 and moved up to 3rd on the NCAA DIII All-Time Top-10 behind Dan Henderson (13:50.0) and Dale Kramer (13:53.2) – both of whom ran their marks back in the late 1970s.
LaMere scorched the track at the Dr. Keeler Track & Field Invitational hosted by North Central (Ill.). Running in the fastest section, LaMere made quick work of the competition and won by nearly 24 seconds over Calvin’s Andrew Philipose.
Gonaives, Haiti
Maybe it’s time to take note of what Wadeline Jonathas is doing.
Jonathas, a freshman from Gonaives, Haiti, earned her third consecutive National Athlete of the Week honor following a standout performance at the NEICAAA Outdoor Championships.
Eight days after starring at the New England Outdoor Championships, Jonathas clocked NCAA DIII’s fastest time over 400 meters. Jonathas’ mark of 54.01 also stands as the 8th fastest mark in NCAA DIII history and fastest since Hulerie McGuffie ran 53.55 last year.
Take a look at the NCAA DIII Descending Order List and you’ll see Jonathas’ name atop the 100 (11.59w), 200 (23.67) and 400 (54.01). Another glance at the NCAA DIII record book and you’ll see Jonathas’ name 1st (200), 3rd (100) and 8th (400).
Pretoria, South Africa
It was quiet week in terms of NJCAA Division I outdoor track & field with the championships coming up this weekend. But that didn’t stop Moses Dirane from getting in another strong performance.
One week after winning the Region VI Outdoor Championships in the 1500 and 5000 meter races, in addition to finishing 2nd in the 10000 meters, the native of Pretoria, South Africa, took part in the Spire Twilight, posting the top steeplechase mark in all of NJCAA Division I at 9:19.61. His mark is a shade over 8 seconds better than anyone on the descending order list this season.
Monticello, Arkansas
Kyelah Hodges had a very strong outing at the Region VI Outdoor Championships a week ago, placing 3rd in the 800 meter while helping the 4×800 relay squad claim 1st place. But that didn’t stop her from trying to improve in other events ahead of the NJCAA Division I Championships this weekend.
The sophomore from Monticello, Arkansas, competed at the Spire Twilight this past weekend, winning the event title in the 400 meters with a time of 55.88. In what was just her 2nd time competing in the event this outdoor season, Hodges time puts her at 20th on the NJCAA Division I Descending Order List.
