From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Matt Giusto (born October 25, 1966 in San Francisco, California) is an American track and field athlete. He competed for the United States, running the 5,000 meters in the 1996 Olympics.[1]

He was a 1984 graduate of San Mateo High School where he was the 1983 national champion at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships. He went on to finish third in the 3200 meters at the CIF California State Meet.[2]

While at the University of Arizona he was the 1988 NCAA Champion at 5,000 meters,[3] thus he became the first male athlete to win both the Footlocker National Championship and an NCAA Championship.

By virtue of finishing second at the USA National Cross Country Championships, he ran on the USA team at the 1993 World Cross Country Championships.

He was the 1993 and 1994 USA National Champion at 5,000 meters[4] and also in 1994, the Indoor 3,000 meter champion.[5]

He also took a shot at road running, winning the 1994 national road championship at 5K[6] and the 1996 Crescent City Classic, which also was the national championship race.[7]

Deena Kastor Sets Four World Masters Records at Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - (Sept. 21, 2014) - Nothing appears to be stopping American distance-running ace Deena Kastor. The 41-year-old Olympic bronze medalist and American marathon-record holder added another mark to her impressive and extensive resume this weekend: the Masters world record in the half-marathon. Kastor, who lives and trains in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., clocked 1 hour, 9 minutes and 36 seconds to finish third at the Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon on Sunday morning.

Along the way, Kastor also set three more Masters world records at 15K (49:03), 10 miles (52:41) and 20K (1:05:52). She also broke her own American Masters half-marathon record of 1:11:38.

Her showing was a 20-second improvement over the previous world best set by Russia's Irina Permitina in 2008.

Ethiopia's Aberu Kebede, the 2012 Berlin Marathon Champion, won the women's race in 1:08:40. Kenya's Caroline Rotich came in 41 seconds later at 1:09:21. Kastor said being able to keep an eye on both Kebede and Rotich throughout the race spurred her stay competitive during the miles where she had her doubts.

Course Records Fall at USA 50K Championships

BEND, Ore. (Sept. 21, 2014) - It was a fast day at the
USA 50K Trail Championships, held today at Bend's Flagline 50K. A cloudless sky with temperatures in the 50s would bode well for the athletes to set off at a fast pace and as a result, both the men's and women's course records were broken.

For the women, first-timer at the distance, Megan Roche, 24, Mountain View, Calif., led from the start and, in a competitive field, finished eight overall in a time of four hours, 40 seconds,, smashing the 2012 record of 4:11:28 set by Erica Baron.

The men's race saw Tim Tollefson, 29, Mammoth Lakes, Calif. (pictured above, photo by Richard Bolt), in his debut trail race break away from the field some six miles into the race and finish with a course-record performance of 3:24:04.

Ryan Hall Teams Up With MetroPCS Dallas Marathon as Elite Ambassador

DALLAS - Two-time U.S. Olympic marathoner and American half-marathon record holder
Ryan Hall has signed a multi-year partnership agreement with the MetroPCS Dallas Marathon to serve as an ambassador for Dallas' oldest and largest marathon. In addition to participating in the MetroPCS Dallas Marathon, Half Marathon and Behringer Relay weekend activities each December, Hall will appear in promotional campaigns for the event.

The 31-year-old Hall (image courtesy PhotoRun) posted the best-ever American time in the marathon and has represented the U.S. in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic games. Hall made his marathon debut at the 2007 London marathon, where he placed seventh at 2:08:24, now the American record for a debut marathon. He is married to Sara Hall, also a professional distance runner, and together they operate the nonprofit Hall Steps Foundation, which funds mentoring and running programs for at-risk youth.

Hales, Stephen Win XTERRA Trail Run Nationals

OGDEN, Utah (September 21, 2014) - Brett Hales made quite the first impression on Snowbasin Resort and the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.

Although he lives in Layton - about 35 miles away from Snowbasin - Hales had never raced on the picturesque trails at Snowbasin until Sunday. All he did in his first XTERRA Trail Run was win the overall National Championship.

"It was phenomenal, I loved it," said Hales, 28, who was competing in his first-ever trail race. "Holy cow, that was so addicting. Looking left and seeing the valley, looking right and seeing the valley, it was unlike anything I've ever done before."

In the women's race, Liz Stephen (pictured), a two-time Olympic cross country skier from Vermont who spends her off-season in Park City, captured the elusive women's championship title after two close second-place finishes on this course in 2011 and last year.

Her winning time of 1:27:55 was more than two minutes ahead of runner-up Kimber Mattox from Eugene.

NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships – Men's 110 meter hurdles

$
0
0
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of the NCAA outdoor champions in the 120 yard high hurdles until 1975, with the metric 110 meters hurdles being contested in Olympic years starting in 1932. Metrication occurred in 1976, so all subsequent championships were at the metric distance. Hand timing was used until 1973, starting in 1974 fully automatic timing was used. The height of the hurdles and the spacing between the two races are identical, 110 meters is 29 cm just slightly under a foot longer from the last hurdle to the finish line.

09.15.2014 T&D Conversation With Joe Keever
Encounters with the Elders: Joe Keever Talks about Life and Sport
By Bruce Colman
Joe Keever has the distinction of being second-oldest still-working official in Pacific Association.
At virtually any meet held at Stanford, UC Berkeley, College of San Mateo, DeAnza College—or at Cal Poly-SLO’s annual two-day meet—look for Joe at the throwing venues, often working with colleagues he has recruited or organized to help with the meet.
Over cheese and crackers at his newly re-built home in the Dos Palos neighborhood of Los Altos—xeriscaping out front; vegetable garden and fruit trees in the back yard--he talked with Turns and Distances about his athletic career, his volunteer work, and his officiating practices.
BC: You took an unusual route into officiating. Tell us about it.
JK: One day I was driving around Stanford and saw all these athletes around the track, and thought, what’s going on?
I parked the car and walked over to the hammer cage. John Luppes, was working the hammer and I said, “What’s going on here?” He told me a little bit about it. I said “How do I get involved?” So that was it. He introduced me right then to Rich Zulaica the certification chairman. We talked on the phone. He sent me the rule book and test. I got certified in 1999. I haven’t been around that long compared to some of you folks, you gray beards.
BC: Growing up, did you compete in athletics?
JK: I’ve always been involved in athletics, even back in Ohio.
BC: Ohio? So you’re not from around here. Where did you actually grow up?
JK: We moved from the inner city of Cleveland to a suburb, Bay Village, A small town situated right on Lake Erie, a beautiful place to grow up. That’s where I went to high school.
BC: Okay, back to sports.
JK: In high school, I threw the discus, the shot and played football and basketball. We had a relatively small school. My claim to fame in football is that I made All County, so I was recruited by some well-known coaches, including Woody Hayes, Wes Fesler, you probably never heard of him, he was the Ohio State coach at the time, and also Bernie Biermann at Minnesota.
We ran a single wing, and I was the end. I cleared the way, and did fairly well.
I chose to go to Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, because my coach, Jack Llewellyn, was an all-Ohio fullback there and in fact, Woody Hayes recruited me to Miami, he was the varsity coach and I was on the freshman team. The next year he went to Ohio State and Ara Parseghian became my coach, my second year.
Well, I got hurt and I saw I wasn’t going to go anywhere, so I quit.
But I stayed on the track team and threw the discus.
6 09.15.2014 T&D Conversation With Joe Keever 20-Sep-14
BC: What was your PR?
JK: I’d be embarrassed to tell you, because any ninth grade girl could beat it now. But my claim to fame is we were going over to Ball State for a meet, which was right across from Miami, in Indiana, and Coach Rider stood up on the bus and said, “Anyone ever throw the javelin?”
I said, I did, because one of my coaches in Ohio, gave me one of his javelins from college. It was wooden and broken, but I fixed it and used it to practice. Anyway, I was entered in the javelin and I won, because the rest of them were worse than I was.
But in the discus in high school, I made the state finals and I came either eighth or ninth in the state of Ohio, but I was the only left-hander who made the finals. So I say that at the time I was the best left-hander throwing the discus in the state.
BC: You carry something unusual in your bag—beyond the usual rule books, clip boards, pencils, jackets and such.
JK: One thing I carry is plastic ties because at some of the schools, I need to repair the netting. Where there’s an opening, I’ll twist-tie it together. As an example, at Cal Poly, theirs is a disaster. I’ve put up quite a few twist ties there to repair the cage and make it safe. The first thing that I do when I go to a venue is walk around the cage and see what kind of shape this thing is in and see if it needs a little repair.
BC: Then we have observed you doing a special ritual with athletes.
JK: I like to pick an imaginary line and line the throwers up according to the throwing order. Then I ask them, look to your right and that’s the handsome dude you’re going to follow. During the competition, they then know who they’re going to follow and can get ready so there’s no time lag. That’s the reason I do it.
BC: Do you line them up again before finals?
JK: I have, but usually not.
BC: What is the A Team?
JK: We have a very close group of throws officials, plus Baird Lloyd, who’s a horizontals jumps specialist, and so for some reason years ago I would put out a plea for help for an upcoming meet, at whatever school we were going officiate. And all of a sudden, we named it the A Team, just to make sure that we’re the best.
So I would put out a notice that, okay, guys, we’re going to Cal a week from Friday, who’s available? That evolved to where I would put out a monthly calendar. I narrowed it down to the local meets. Some of us have played golf together. The last few years, Deanna Bower, has hosted a potluck at her house for the A team. Deanna is a long-time throws official. We have a great group and enjoy working together.
BC: How can people join the A Team? Or can they?
JK: I recruit qualified throws officials.
BC: Tell us about your military service.
JK: I actually washed out of the Air Force with high blood pressure, but I was allowed to go back to school, to finish. I had a semester to go, then I was drafted. This was ’53 or ’54. Nineteen, not eighteen, thank you very much.
20-Sep-14 09.15.2014 T&D Conversation With Joe Keever 7
I went to basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was shipped to the Signal Corps at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Eventually I became a platoon sergeant, in charge of about 90 soldiers. My job was to teach them communications. Unfortunately, those men, many of them, were sent to Korea. That was near the end of the Korean War.
The Army wanted to find out, in times of conflict, if they could effectively teach soldiers all over the country over television. They chose what I was teaching as ideal for the experiment. This is to show you how you luck into things. Private Downey--I remember his name--and I tried out for the position. He had such a deep southern drawl, they couldn’t understand him, so I got the job by default. Every Monday and Tuesday, I would teach over television and my face and voice went to Army classrooms and movie theaters all over the east coast.
We did that for about a year. Interestingly, I was the only non-New York-network person in the studio, and it was my program. Everyone else was from NBC, ABC and I think CBS. So I was the rookie in the studio.
In fact, I would have stayed in if the program continued, but the Army brass found out what they wanted to know and the program was discontinued. So I was discharged and joined the reserves for about 8 years. But a very interesting thing to do in the Army. I was very lucky. Oh, another interesting Army experience. In 1955 a bunch of us were recruited to be marshals at the Masters in Augusta Ga. Dr. Middlecolf won that year.
BC: Then from the Army you went to…
JK: I started out as an IBM salesman. Funny, I was not a good student in college, in fact I graduated near the bottom of my class. IBM was the most difficult company to get in at the time. My transcript came in before I was hired and my manager, Dick Surface, said, “What’s this?, you graduated near the bottom of your class.” But I told him that I’m in the top 2% of all males in the country and I graduated, so he hired me. And I made the 100% Club my first year, so I did well with IBM for five years. Then I went with Merrill Lynch for about five years and later EF Hutton. I was in the investment business for 42 years.
BC: Did that bring you to California?
JK: I had a chance to move my business from Cleveland in 1983 and open an office in Danville with Prudential Securities. And then after about 10 years we moved down here to Los Altos.
BC: Now you and Mrs. Keever have had a lot of drama in this house.
JK: November 8, 2011, right after midnight, the smoke alarm went off. Shirley woke up first then woke me. Down the hallway, we could see, the entire other end was ablaze. We could see the smoke coming at us. There was a short in the fish tank and that’s what started it. The fireman said, in two minutes, you would not have made it out. Interestingly enough, Shirley had bought a new cell phone that day. In the house, the electricity was out. So that was her first call, to 911.
8 09.15.2014 T&D Conversation With Joe Keever 20-Sep-14
Within a few minutes, the fire department came and also News Channel 5. They evacuated the houses on either side of us as a precaution. No one was hurt.
We were treated relatively well by the insurance company. We hired an outside company to represent us with State Farm. We could not have done it by ourselves and for that we paid a fee. We are very pleased with how the house turned out. It took almost two years. It shouldn’t have taken that long but as we would make changes that added to the time.
Anyway, we got all the upgrades, including a ceiling sprinkler system, which is now code in our town. Overall, we’re very pleased with the outcome. We had two different places that we lived in that two years. A house around the corner here, and then finally an apartment in Sunnyvale. But here we are.
Oh, and we had no furniture. It all burned up. So we not only have a new house, but new furniture. Also I had about 20 pairs of pants that hung in the closet. We were paid on all 20, at a reduced price, but only two fit anyhow, so it didn’t make any difference.
BC: You do quite a bit of volunteer work in the community, we understand.
JK: Every Tuesday, I’m at the Ronald McDonald House, been there almost nine years. I volunteer with the families, tending to their needs and so on.
Prior to that I taught aeronautics to school kids at NASA for about eight years. I had a run-in with the head of the department over there and I lost. So that’s when I started at the Ronald McDonald House.
I’m also at the Veterans Administration once a week, been there about 9 years, except in the summer, because the high school kids take over. I work with Bill Hawkes there, another track and field official.
We volunteer in the patient escort office. We escort the patients in wheelchairs or gurneys to their appointments. They’re all soldiers or veterans.
Joe teamed with Bill Hawkes to mark the hammer.
And I do it to help and it’s close by, it’s good exercise, and I feel like I’m contributing.
I do a lot of mystery shopping. I shop car dealers, apartments, banks, and stock brokers. This is checking on customer service, making sure the people are following the company guidelines. Shirley and also have “shopped” restaurants.
During the school year, I’m a Red Coat at Stanford. Technically, that’s Guests Services. We do anything to make visiting teams, our teams, visiting parents, coaches--anything to make them feel welcome.
I have worked most of the sports over there. Stanford has 35 NCAA sports, eighteen women and seventeen men, and I probably have worked most of them. It’s paid. You get to know some of the athletes, a lot of the parents and coaches.
Every Christmas morning, I’m at the VA, and I sing, with a group, in the wards to the soldiers and veterans that are in the hospital.
BC: Are you trained as a singer?
JK (laughing): No.
JK: When not officiating, I like to play golf. During the off season for track and field, I usually play once a week and with the same guys for many years.
20-Sep-14 09.15.2014 T&D Conversation With Joe Keever 9
BC: What do you think are the qualities, attitudes, knowledge and skills a Pacific Association official should bring to the field of play?
JK: First of all, you have to have the time and a commitment. You can’t do a meet a month, I don’t think. If you’re going to do it, let’s do it. So you have to have the time, probably retired or semi-retired, and be willing to work, sometimes, in the hot sun.
I think it’s one of our obligations to look for people who we think are potential good recruits and bring them in. Talk to the people leaning over the fence that you see there every week, and parents, and every once in a while you’ll get somebody who will make a good official.
I think all officials should take it on their shoulder to talk to other people whom you think would make a good official. They don’t come to us, we have to go to them.
BC: Finally, one of our colleagues asked that you tell the Wild Boar Story.
JK: I was the manager of the Cleveland branch of EF Hutton for about 10 years and sponsored a family picnic for all employees every year. Games, gifts, and a cookout.
One year I decided to have a wild pig roast at one of these outings. One of my brokers belonged to a hunting preserve in southern Ohio. We decided if he would go down--200 miles or so---shoot a pig and I would arrange to fly down and bring it back.
I was a private pilot and part owner of a Cessna 172. John drove to southern Ohio and went hunting and did indeed shoot a wild pig. He had it frozen since it wouldn't fit in his car. We both flew down a few weeks later--just before the family picnic--to pick it up.
So here was the problem. It was frozen with the legs extended. We had a real chore getting the pig into the airplane plus the two of us. Well, we managed with some help from the manager of the preserve to finally get the pig into the plane.
We flew back to Burke Lakefront Airport in downtown Cleveland without any problem. The tower directed me to a location since I told him we had some things to unload. He allowed my friend to bring his truck to the plane.
Now here's the interesting part. We had trouble getting the pig out of the plane. The tower thought we had a human body since it was wrapped in canvas--and he summoned the police. Two cars came with their lights flashing--one car on either side of the plane and guns drawn. Yep. We were frightened.
Once they saw it was not a human body, but a frozen pig, they helped us get it out of the plane and into my friend’s truck. Quite a short term frightening experience for us--with a happy ending.
Oh--the pig roast was a success
BC: How long will you keep officiating, do you think?
JK: I’d like to do it as long as I can. I can always do something. I don’t work in the field anymore. I haven’t done that in a number of years. But I can run the board. That is, call them up, call fouls, run the event.
I think it’s great working with these young folks. Some come in and some haven’t the foggiest idea what they’re doing. It’s fun to watch them progress and great to get to know them on a personal level.
I admire excellence.
BC would like to thank Don Collins, Shirley Connors, Sonny Maynard and (of course) Margaret Sheehan for their help with this interview.

BERKELEY – Jeff Kent, the former California baseball player who retired from the Major Leagues in 2008 as one of the most prolific second basemen in history, has created The Jeff Kent Women Driven Scholarship Endowment to support the education of female student-athletes at Cal, it was announced Monday.

Kent’s donation of $531,000, augmented by $100,000 in matching funds, will create a fully endowed scholarship in perpetuity for Cal Athletics.

“The creation of this endowment demonstrates Jeff’s continued leadership in philanthropy, particularly in supporting student athletes at Cal. He stands as a role model to both former collegiate and professional athletes,” said Phil Esten, Deputy Director of Athletics and External Relations. “The University is delighted to see the value he places on his Cal education by his continued involvement, whether through women’s athletics or men’s baseball. Jeff’s dedication is truly remarkable.”

Kent will return to the Bay Area to be recognized for his generosity and commitment to Cal during the Golden Bears’ football game against Colorado at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 27.

Monday’s announced endowment will provide a full scholarship each year to one female student-athlete selected from soccer, softball, tennis, track or cross country at the University. The criteria for the scholarship include a preference for non-recruited student-athletes with a minimum 2.8 GPA, an interest in community service or mentoring, and demonstrated financial need.

The Women Driven Scholarship Endowment has its origins in the Women Driven fund created by Jeff and his wife, Dana, together with the San Francisco Giants in 1998. That original entity earmarked funds for the program with every RBI Kent produced in addition to an annual celebrity golf tournament. Combining Kent’s $500-per-RBI commitment with corporate matching funds, Women Driven raised over $115,000 toward scholarships for female walk-on athletes at Cal in its first year, and over $600,000 throughout his career with the Giants.

Kent’s desire to support female athletes was fueled by the birth of his first child, daughter Lauren, along with his personal memories of how tough it was to make ends meet while at Cal. Kent entered Cal as a walk-on athlete with a partial scholarship before receiving a full scholarship in his final year. Recognizing that many female athletes coach and mentor others after graduation, Kent chose to encourage this tradition of service by emphasizing the involvement in community service and mentoring as a key criterion for the awarding of each scholarship. This element remains in the language for the current endowment.

Kent credited everyone who joined the cause when Women Driven began 16 years ago for adding to his desire to create a long-term endowment. “It was the goal from day one of the original Women Driven program to create an endowed scholarship,” he said. “Having the opportunity to get an education at Cal can make a profound difference in life. I know how much I benefited. Everybody should have a shot, and this is my chance to ensure others have their shot.”

“It’s not every day you get a phone call from a former Golden Bear and professional athlete who says he wants to endow an athletic scholarship, let alone for a male athlete to be such an outspoken champion of women’s athletics,” said H. Michael Williams, Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “Jeff came to us with this idea. Supporting 30 sports programs at Cal is a challenge and he is making a significant difference for female student-athletes in five of those programs, differences that will have an impact throughout the rest of their lives.”

About Jeff Kent
Jeff Kent (Baseball, 1987-89) was a three-year starter for Cal at shortstop. He set a school record with 25 doubles during the 1987 season, a mark that stood until 1998. His 1988 team won the NCAA Central Regionals in Austin, Texas, and advanced to the College World Series. After Cal, Jeff emerged as one of the greatest second basemen in MLB history, earning All-Star recognition with the San Francisco Giants in 1999, 2000 and 2001; with Houston in 2004; and with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005. He won the 2000 National League Most Valuable Player award, hitting .334 with 33 home runs and 125 RBI as a part of the Giants’ National League West Division championship team, and earned four Silver Slugger awards. After a 17-year career in the major leagues, Jeff owns the all-time career home run record (377) for second basemen and is the only second baseman in the history of the game to produce six consecutive 100-RBI seasons. His post-MLB highlights include being the first-ever former player to participate on the reality television show Survivor Philippines. Kent owns three locations of Kent Powersports and a working ranch, the Diamond K, in Texas.

About the Jeff Kent Women Driven Fund
The Women Driven Fund was established by Jeff Kent and his wife, Dana, with the support of the San Francisco Giants in 1998 to help fund scholarships to walk-on women athletes at the University of California, where Jeff played baseball on a partial scholarship as a walk-on athlete before receiving a full scholarship his final year. The original annual scholarships were awarded based on academic achievement, economic need, coaches’ recommendations, community service and athletic ability. From its inception, the program included a mentoring program to involve professional women and former scholarship recipients in the lives of younger women. The realization of the current Women Driven Scholarship Endowment completes the commitment the Kents made at the fund’s creation to fully endow a scholarship in women’s athletics at Cal.

About Cal Athletics
The University of California is represented by 850 student-athletes in 30 sports. Striving for excellence in the classroom and the arenas of competition, Cal teams have earned 85 national championships in 15 different sports, with 264 individual national championships won by student-athletes. September 23, 2014

NEW ORLEANS – With three weeks of competition in the books since the preseason, three new teams sit atop their respective regions in the first regular-season edition of the NCAA Division II Cross Country Regional Team Rankings, released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The men of Lock Haven and Florida Southern rose to the top of the Atlantic and South regions, respectively, while the lone new women’s No. 1 was Montevallo in the Southeast.

Regional Rankings Summary PDF | DII XC Rankings Central
QUICK LINKS: Men’s Regions | Women’s Regions

Lock Haven (ranked No. 12 nationally) performed well against Atlantic preseason favorite Shippensburg(No. 9 nationally) at the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational to take the top spot from the Raiders. Shippensburg dropped to No. 2.

A strong runner-up showing among non-Division I schools at the Florida Mountain Dew Invitational boosted Florida Southern up two spots in the South, while a fourth-place showing by Tampa launched it up five spots.

Preseason region favorite Saint Leo finished fifth and fell three spots to No. 4. Though the season is still quite young, but as it currently stands Saint Leo is on the outside looking in; the region will only qualify three teams to the NCAA Championships.

Montevallo‘s women won the GRU Augusta Invitational in dominant fashion to jump three spots to the pinnacle of the Southeast Region. North Georgia, the runner-up at GRU Augusta, likewise leapt three spots to the region’s No. 2 spot. Preseason favorite Wingate dropped to No. 3.

Other teams making moves toward the top? The men of Mars Hill (Southeast) and the women of Shippensburg (Atlantic), Saint Leo (South) and Simon Fraser (West) all moved to the No. 2 positions in their respective regions.

The biggest jumps in the rankings came from the aforementioned Tampa and UW-Parkside men (up five to No. 4 in the Midwest) and the women of Assumption (up five to No. 3 in the East) and Wayne State (Mich.)(up six to No. 3 in the Midwest).

Eighteen new teams joined the region rankings, with the West Alabama women joining in with the highest rank at No. 5 in the South Region. The Bentley (East) and Shorter (South) men both debuted at No. 6.

The National Coaches Polls will be released Wednesday. Regionals will be held around the country on November 22 and 23. More information can be found on the USTFCCCA’s Regional Championships Central.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.

Grace and Katie Open Cross-Country Season In Washington State

Grace Thompson and Katie Harris both represented Collingwood in the Sundodger Invitational meet hosted by the University of Washington today in Seattle. This meet featured many of the top runners in both BC and Washington so the competition was fierce. Grace finished 7th, while Katie was 13th. These were outstanding results for both girls.

Katie is only in Grade 10, but she is challenging girls two years older than her in these big events.

Grace Thompson and Emma Rastad Win National Championships In Track

Grace Thompson and Emma Rastad capped their summer vacations by each winning a gold medal at The Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships. This meet brings together the best young track stars in the country so it was a significant win for both girls.

Grace won the U-18 girls 1500m race with a time of 4:33.32. She also ran a 2:12.24 in the 800m race. Emma jumped 5.50 to win the U-16 girls longjump. Congratulations to both girls. Their Collingwood cross-country and track coaches can't wait to get them back into school colours for events this year.

UT Director of Track and Field leads Team Americas at Continental Cup

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee has a long history of success in international competition from its student-athletes and coaches. This month, Tennessee's newest head coach became the latest to join that elite club.

UT Director of Track and Field Beth Alford-Sullivan served as the head coach for The Americas at the 2014 Continental Cup. Held every four years and formerly known as the World Cup, the Continental Cup is an IAAF event that splits the world into four regions for international track and field's only scored team competition.

"It was a great honor to represent the Americas and to represent Tennessee at the same time," said Alford-Sullivan. "Not a lot of people get to do international competitions. I've had the opportunity to grow as a coach and learn from my experiences and bring it back to our teams here."

For a college coach, building and fostering the team concept while also pushing the individual athletes to achieve personal bests is just another day at the office.

"Most of the kids in our continent have gone to school in the states," Alford-Sullivan said. "Many of the athletes have gone through the American system, so they were able to pull back in the college rivalries. It was fun to spark that scoring sense again and remind them that they don't get to do this very often anymore."

Alford-Sullivan's team included athletes from Canada, Mexico, and the United States as well as countries in the Caribbean and South America. The team had two representatives in each event, though the two had to be from different countries. Among them were some of the most talented track athletes in the world.

"We had 33 medalists from the 2012 Olympics, and 14 Diamond League Champions," Alford-Sullivan said. "And the unique look of Jamaican athletes and American athletes running together on the same relay."

The trip was not Alford-Sullivan's first international coaching stint. She served as the women's head coach for Team USA at the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Championships in 2013. She was also on the Team USA coaching staffs for the 2004 Olympic Games, 2001 and 2003 World Championships, 2011 Junior Pan American Championships and 2008 NACAC U-23 Championships.

It is an international profile that she intends to continue building.

"I've appreciated the efforts on both sides," Alford-Sullivan said. "From Tennessee's side in allowing me to go and USA Track and Field and Americas Track and Field to have me in that position."

Sullivan, 48, joined Penn State after five seasons at Stanford, where she coached more than 30 NCAA All-American athletes and one NCAA individual champion as the women's coordinator for the Cardinal track program.

Career[edit]
Spearmon is a graduate of Fayetteville High School and attended the University of Arkansas, where he competed collegiately for two seasons before turning pro. While at Arkansas, he won the 200 meters NCAA Outdoor title in 2004 and 2005 as well as the NCAA Indoor 200 m title in 2005. In August 2005, he won the silver medal in the 200 m at the 2005 World Championships and in August 2007, he won the bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships. Spearmon won the 200 m at the USA outdoor athletics championships in 2006 and finished second in 2007. At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin he won another bronze. He ran a world best time of 31.88 for the 300 m indoors in February 2006.[1]

His personal best in the 200 m is 19.65 seconds. This time (achieved in Daegu, Korea) made him the third fastest man over the distance at that point.[2] He is currently ranked as the seventh fastest runner ever. Only world record holder Usain Bolt (19.19), Yohan Blake (19.26), Michael Johnson (19.32), Walter Dix (19.53), his training partner Tyson Gay (19.58), and Xavier Carter (19.63) have run faster. Despite the fact that he normally runs a "slower" first half of his 200 m races and goes on to pass people down the stretch, his 100 meters personal best is 9.96 s. He set that mark running in Shanghai on September 28, 2007, beating 100 m world champion Tyson Gay.

Spearmon initially finished in the bronze medal position in the 200 m in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but was disqualified for stepping out of his lane. The second place finisher, Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles, was also disqualified, giving Americans Shawn Crawford and Walter Dix the silver and bronze medals, respectively.[3]

He posted a quick time of 19.98 seconds in the 200 m in Kingston, Jamaica in April 2010, finishing behind Usain Bolt.[4] He reached the 2010 IAAF Diamond League 200 m final at the Weltklasse Zurich meeting, and (in the absence of points leader Walter Dix) he won the first Diamond Race Trophy with a meeting record of 19.79 seconds.[5] Following the Diamond League win, he ran 19.85 seconds to win at the Rieti IAAF Grand Prix.[6]

At the start of the 2012 season, he broke Michael Johnson's 200 m meet record at the Drake Relays with a run of 20.02 seconds.[7] He finished fourth in the 200 metres final at the 2012 London Olympics. His time of 19.90 seconds was 6/100 of a second outside of a medal placing.

At a meeting in Edmonton in July, 2014, Spearmon tested positive for methylprednisolone contained in a medicine he was taking without asking for an exemption. USADA accepted the excuse so it was treated as a minor violation. On September 19, 2014 it was announced he would receive a 3 month suspension, backdated to August 27.[8]

Personal life[edit]
Spearmon's father, Wallace Spearmon, Sr, was also a sprinter. He was the 1987 bronze medalist in the 200 meters at the Pan American Games.

He is good friends with fellow sprinter Usain Bolt; they are known for there jokes and good friendship.

Spearmon was formerly engaged to fellow American track athlete Monica Hargrove.[9]

On an April 2011 episode of MythBusters, he worked with Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman to investigate the possibility of a human running on water. In May 2013 he returned to the show to race 30 ft against a race car.
