How accurate is the Unbroken movie?

So how closely did the filmmakers stick to Zamperini’s account, as told by Hillenbrand?
Quite closely—though, as those reviews have mentioned, a lot of details are left out from the 137-minute running time. The film ends, for instance, soon after the war ends, whereas Hillenbrand spends several chapters delving into what occurred post-war. Below, I take a look at some of the other major ways the movie reflects, and occasionally diverges from, its source.

Keith Conning: I enjoyed reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. I look forward to seeing the movie.

How Grant Fisher Did It

...in a Foot Locker field where many of the young men are pushing 100 miles a week, Fisher’s volume was half that. But Scannell (Fisher's coach) cautions: “Who cares? I mean, miles a week is nothing to me. The way you train, the manner you train, the how you train—is everything to me.

Fernando Cabada to be coached by Brad Hudson

Fernando Cabada
5 hrs · Edited ·
Excited to announce that I will be reunited with coach Brad Hudson. Back in 2012 Brad coached me to a 7th place finish at the USA Olympic Marathon Trials and breaking 2:12 (2:11:53) in the distance for the first time. I have been self coached the past 18 months or so and have seen great success running 1:02:00 for the 1/2 marathon and 2:11:36 for the Full marathon distances. Every year I learn so much, but still lack knowledge and need someone who has the experience in coaching high level athletes on my side once again. If I am to be serious about making the 2016 USA Olympic Marathon Team for Rio I will need a lot of help and can't do it alone. I am confident and will let Brad take the wheel for my training and race decisions. With both our experience put together, I believe it'll be more than enough to make that Olympic Team! 2015 and beyond......here we come!

When Cabada graduated from high school he achieved his boyhood dream of competing for the highly successful University of Arkansas program led by the legendary John McDonnell. Claiming that he was not physically or mentally ready to compete there, Cabada left the school in 2001. He stopped running for nearly eight months and took a break from college for a year, taking a job laying tile where his mother worked. He agreed to compete for Minot State University, but before he would ever run a race for Minot, head coach Scott Simmons took the head coaching job at Virginia Intermont and Cabada and several runners followed. In the two years since, he has won seven national titles for the NAIA school. After completing his collegiate eligibility in 2006, later that season Cabada capped his breakout year with a spectacular debut over the Marathon distance in Fukuoka, Japan. In running the ninth-fastest debut marathon ever by an American (2:12:27), Cabada underlined the fact that he is one of the top young distance runners in the United States. In 2006, Cabada set new personal bests in everything from the 3000m to the Marathon.

Bob Rush and the Crystal Springs Cross Country Course

$

The Human Race by Len Wallack

There's a scraggly pine tree standing along at the crest
of the long uphill leg of the Crystal Springs cross-country
course in Belmont.

"This tree is dedicated to Bob Rush for his contribution to cross-country running."

http://library.la84.org/SportsLibrary/NCRR/1977/ncrr67.pdf

============================================================

Boy, you really went into the archives. I had forgotten about that article by Len Wallach. If Len Wallach were still alive he would be surprised to know that the original tree died and that it was replaced by a tree out of Dick Connors back yard. It is about 15 feet tall and doing very well.
My two sons added another more stable plaque that should be there long after I am gone.
I have estimated that about a half of million runners have competed on Crystal Springs since 1971. My biggest concern is who will care and preserve the course after I can no longer do it. The time is nearing-- I will be 80 in June.

Bob Rush, Dec. 27, 2014

==========================================================================

Bob Rush was inducted into the College of San Mateo Hall of Fame in 2011.

Eight months have passed since the stirring race through Beantown that made Keflezighi, then just two weeks shy of his 39th birthday, a marvel among the globe’s greatest distance runners. More significantly, his fist-pumping, arms-raised triumph lifted the spirits of not only that battered city and its tragedy-marred event, but his entire country.

NEW YORK - As 2014 comes to a close, thousands of New Yorkers and runners from across the country will dash into 2015 at the stroke of midnight at the 36th NYRR Midnight Run in Central Park on December 31. American road-racing power couple Cole Atkins, the defending champion, and Esther Erb, the 2014 USA Marathon champion representing the local New York Athletic Club team, will lead a talented field of professional athletes. A new addition to this year's race is the New Year's Resolution Bib, a back bib for runners to write what they will be running for in 2015. Runners and spectators alike are invited to the free pre- and post-race festival at Central Park's Naumburg Bandshell, featuring a dance party amidst the only fireworks display in Manhattan.

"The NYRR Midnight Run is one of our longest standing races and a New York City tradition," said Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of New York Road Runners. "The high-spirited event brings together top local and national athletes, along with thousands of others running to bring in the New Year. It's a fun night filled with music, fireworks, and the first run of the season."

BOSTON, Mass. -Four more American stars who have graced an Olympic or World Championships podium- Jenn Suhr, Mary Cain, Matthew Centrowitz, and Brenda Martinez - have been added to the roster   for the 20thrunning of the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Feb. 7, organizers announced.

Among the most-anticipated races of the evening will be an attempt at a World Best in the women's Distance Medley Relay, an event featuring distances, in order, of 1200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, and 1600 meters that will be contested for the first time in meet's 20-year history. Martinez, the 2013 IAAF World Championships bronze medalist at 800 meters, will be among the featured athletes on a  Team New Balance
squad, which will be challenged by teams from, among others,
New Balance Ireland, anchored by Irish 1500-meter champion
Ciara McGeean; the New Jersey-New York Track Club;
Boston College; and  Harvard University.

The current World Best for the women's indoor DMR is 10:50.98, set at the 2009 NCAA Championships by a University of Tennessee team consisting of Phoebe Wright, Brittany Jones, Chanelle Price, and Sarah Bowman.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -  Alexa Efraimson, 17, shattered the previous U.S. 5K road record for Junior women (ages 19-and-under) with a time of 16 minutes and 8 seconds at the 10th
Applied Materials "Silicon Valley Turkey Trot" in San Jose, Calif. on November 27, 2014 (Thanksgiving Day). Competing in the elite women's section of the 5-kilometer race, the high school senior from Camas, Wash. placed ninth overall. The previous Junior record of 16:23 was set by U.S. standout
Molly Huddle in 2002.

USA Track & Field has officially approved (ratified) Efraimson's mark as a new U.S. Junior record.

The magnitude of Efraimson's performance is reflected in the fact that Huddle is a two-time U.S. women's outdoor 5,000 meter record holder. The 30-year-old Huddle set her current U.S. record of 14:42.64 this past July at a track meet in Monaco.
Efraimson's Junior record-setting road 5K performance in San Jose would have been even faster, by approximately 8 to 10 seconds, had she not stumbled and briefly fell as she approached the Turkey Trot finish line.

CANTON, Ohio - The Pro Football Hall of Fame Marathon
will be offering prize money for those who establish age division records in the Marathon and the Half Mara thon.

The inaugural event in 2014 set all of the base line age group records for the Marathon and Half Marathon. All participants are eligible to compete for the prize money and $100 will be awarded to those who establish new event records in each age group. Current age group records can be viewed on Pro Football Hall of Fame Marathon website.

"Our intention is to recognize and reward runners who are no longer contending for the overall placements but are still running great times in their age group," said
Jim Chaney, Executive Director.

(December 1, 2014) Running USA, the national non-profit trade organization for running events and businesses, announced today that it will seek to raise  $50,000 to fund grant awards that support under-funded running programs.
rusa trademark 2012

Running USA has a strong history of supporting other non-profit running entities, but CEO Rich Harshbarger explained that this year's fundraising effort is different: adopting a grassroots approach open to donors at all funding levels, Running USA is asking anyone who loves runners and the sport of running to

"Previously, we've held an auction at our annual conference to raise money for these grants, but we realized that such an approach wasn't reaching the huge numbers of contributors who want to support some of running's most underfunded, yet truly exceptional, teams and programs," said Harshbarger. "This approach gives everyone whose life has been touched positively by running the chance to give back to the sport they so enjoy."

The grants that will be supported by the fundraising effort include: The Allan Steinfeld Development award, which supports one elite distance training organization annually, and the Running USA Youth Program of the Year and Youth Event of the Year. In the past, the Allan Steinfeld Award has been $25,000 and the two youth awards have each been $5,000. Dependent on the fundraising results, Running USA hopes to increase the number of grants awarded.

NAIROBI, (Xinhua) -- More Kenyans were caught doping beyond the names released by International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), Athletics Kenya (AK) President Isaiah Kiplagat confirmed Friday.
16 more cases have not been reported because the AK cannot track down the suspected athletes to hear their version of the story.
So far 32 cases of doping were reported and only 16 have been made public from Kenya.

Release: Monday 12/08/2014
BERKELEY, Calif. – California Director of Track & Field and Head Cross Country Coach Tony Sandoval announced the signing of 10 standouts to National Letters of Intent, bolstering an already strong lineup. Sandoval, along with his staff, look forward to what this talented group will accomplish during their collegiate careers as Golden Bears.
"I'm pleased that we added some quality recruits for the new early signing period in November,” said Sandoval. “The staff has recruited tirelessly since July 1 both in and out of California. Building upon last year’s MPSF indoor title, "big meet sweep" and our first No. 1 U.S. dual meet ranking, we continue to be a broad-based program within a team experience. Our mission is a national presence for both men's and women's squads in the three championships: cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field."
