Release: Tuesday 09/16/2014
FOSTER CITY, Calif. - Former Olympian and Cal Bear Don Bowden is among four who will be inducted into the USA Track & Field Association's Pacific Association Hall of Fame on Tuesday night in Foster City, Calif.
In 1956 Don was an Olympian in the 1500 meters, but what he is remembered most for was the run he accomplished in 1957. He was the first American to run a sub-4 minute mile (3:58.7) at the AAU Pacific Association Championships in Stockton, on June 1, 1957 which made him the first American to run under 4 minutes and set a USA record. While at Cal Don was world ranked #3 in the 800 meters, and on May 24, 1957 he ran the third leg (1:49.5) for the Golden Bears' 4X880yd. relay world record of 7:21.0 in Los Angeles. Don was inducted into the USATF Hall of Fame in 2008 and currently resides in Saratoga, Calif.
The other three inductees are Ed Burke, Irene Obera and Ruth Anderson. Burke is a three-time Olympic hammer thrower and American record-breaker, Oberais a world record-breaking masters sprinter-hurdler and Anderson is a record-breaking ultrarunner.

1. Gerry Lindgren (Washington State) 13:47.8
Gerald ("Gerry") Paul Lindgren (born March 9, 1946 in Spokane, Washington) is an American track and field runner who set many long-standing high school and national records in the United States. In 1965, Lindgren and Billy Mills both broke the world record for the six-mile run when they finished in an extremely rare tie at the AAU National Championships, both running exactly 27:11.6.[2] Lindgren won multiple NCAA collegiate championships with Washington State University.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerry_Lindgren

Keith Conning:  I was born on March 16, 1941 in San Francisco, California.  Gerry Lindgren was born almost five years later in Spokane, Washington.   I attended the 1965 AAU meet in San Diego, California with my wife Marian.  It was the first and only outdoor track meet that she has attended in our 50+ years of marriage.  She did see our daughter Sarah Conning run in an indoor meet in Minnesota representing Carleton College of Northfield, Minnesota in 1991.  I was not able to attend that meet, because I was teaching Consumer Economics and Business Law and coaching track at Berkeley High School in Berkeley, California.

5. Tom Heinonen (Minnesota) 14:07.2
One of Dellinger's assistants, hired in 1975, Tom Heinonen, was promoted to the head coach for the women's cross country and track and field team in 1977. Prior to Heinonen, no other full-time head coach at Oregon had exclusively coached the women's disciplines. He was a strong advocate for women's sports and was a force in making the Oregon Twilight Meet a co-ed event.[31] Women's cross country and track and field blossomed under Heinonen's leadership. He led the women's team to win its first three NCAA team championships and coached 14 NCAA individual champions. He produced 134 All-Americans and his athletes made 17 appearances in the Olympics.[32] He retired in 2003, after which the University of Oregon Athletic Department decided to combine the men's and women's programs under one head coach.[33]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Ducks_track_and_field

Keith Conning:  I have known Tom Heinonen for many years.  He regularly attended the Kinney Western Regional Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.  Bill Cockerham and his wife Judy were the directors of the meet.  Doug Speck and I wrote for their magazine California Track News.

9. Ambrose Burfoot (Wesleyan) 14:20.6
Ambrose ("Amby") Joel Burfoot (born August 19, 1946) is an American marathoner whose peak competitive years came in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was the winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon. After retiring from competition, he became a running journalist and author. Burfoot was the top editor (editor-in-chief) at Runner’s World for many years and both writes for Runner’s World and serves as editor-at-large.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amby_Burfoot

Keith Conning:  I subscribed to Runner's World magazine for many years.  I went on two of their trips to the Olympic Games in Munich 1972 and in Montreal 1976.

Release: Thursday 10/30/2014
Freshman Bethan Knights hopes to lead the Golden Bears as the squad seeks its first Pac-12 title Friday at the conference Championship meet in Oakland. Knights headed to Berkeley after a stellar high school season that saw her break a national record in the two-mile. The Irvine, California, native led Cal in her debut race, placing 15th at the Roy Griak Invitational with a mark of 21:37.7. She followed up with a standout fifth-place finish at the prestigious Pre-Nationals (20:51.3) meet to earn Cal’s top performer.
Knights and the Golden Bears head to Oakland on Friday to host this year’s Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships at the Metropolitan Golf Links. As the rookie runner prepares, CalBears.com caught up with Knights to get her take on her first semester at Cal and the conference championships.
CalBears.com: How are you feeling about the upcoming Pac-12 Cross Country Championships?
Bethan Knights: Being a freshman and being able to host is so exciting. It is going to be a great experience, because we are going to have loads of fans out there. Since the beginning of the year, I have been telling people about this race. With cross country we are usually traveling really far, so it has been really exciting to get our fans involved in the championships.
CB: Is anyone special coming to watch you race?
BK: My mom is coming up and I am so excited for her to get to watch me race. My family lives in southern California, so they would watch me race in high school. Now they can only watch me on the live feeds, so it will be nice to have them come up for this race. This is the first college meet that they get to watch me race in.
CB: What has your freshman experience been like?
BK: I came off a really great high school season, but going to college you never really know how you will perform. I didn’t really have any expectations coming into the season, I just really wanted to go out and have a good time, see what I could do and hopefully do some really great things. The past two races have gone really well and it is just a reflection of hard training and my experiences at Cal.
CB: What was it like breaking a high school national record?
BK: It was at the Brooks PR meet in the two mile. It was my last high school race, a few weeks after the state meet, in Seattle. It was an incredible experience. I got to race against a few of my Cal teammates and it was one of the first times I had met some of them. It was an unreal high and is not something I have come down from. It was such a good way to end high school. I was already so excited to go to Cal and I felt that I had even more prove.
CB: With All-American Kelsey Santisteban redshirting the season, how have you taken more of a leadership position on the squad?
BK: It was disappointing that Kelsey wasn’t going to be running this season, because I was so excited to run with her. It gave me the opportunity to push myself in training and become part of this team and become more of a leader than I would have otherwise. I learned a lot from myself this season, but I think next year is going to be really great. I will have had more experience and Kelsey will be back. Everyone is improving and I feel like we can do something really great.
CB: What are your expectations for this weekend?
BK: I have been racing hard and training hard, so it would be great to have a big finish at Pac-12s. There are a ton of really great women in the field, so I want to be able to stick with some of the ones that I know and see what I can do in the last 2k, which is what I did at Pre-Nationals. For the team, we are hosting the course and we will have a lot of fans out, so it would be great to have a good showing and place high. We want to show that Cal is on the rise.
CB: Where did you grow up?
BK: I was born in Bristol, England, which is a big city close to London. I moved over to southern California when I was eight and we loved California, so we stayed here. I try to go back and visit family – my entire family is over there.  They are so supportive. After every race, they wish me good luck. It’s so nice to have that fan base over there.
CB: What is something that Cal fans should know about Bethan Knights?
BK: I love every minute of being at Cal. Every time I go out there and race, I want to do well for my team and the fans. I feel like I have a huge family here at Cal already. I lived in Irvine, and I was ready to get out after high school. I thought I wanted to go somewhere far like New York or Michigan. Berkeley is a whole other world, and is completely different than southern California. I love this atmosphere up here and really enjoy it here.

BOSTON -- Riding the momentum of her runner-up finish at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championship two weeks ago, Wisconsin sophomore Sarah Disanza shattered the Wisconsin and Big Ten Conference 5000-meter record in her indoor track debut at the Boston University Opener on Saturday.

Disanza won her race on the 200-meter banked track at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center in 15 minutes, 20.57 seconds, shattering the school and conference record of 15:37.02, which UW’s Kathy Butler ran back in 1997.

Disanza’s time marks the fourth-fastest time ever by a collegian as Kim Smith of Providence holds the collegiate record with a time of 15:14.18 set on March 12 at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships. Sonia O’Sullivan of Villanova is second on the all-time collegiate list with a time of 15:17.28 while Smith also ran the third-best time of 15:18.54 at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center in 2004. The fastest collegiate time is 15:01.70, run by Olympian Jenny (Barringer) Simpson in 2009 but that was run the 307-meter oversized track at the Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.

“Over the last month, Sarah has taken her performance to another level,” Wisconsin director of track and field and cross country Mick Byrne said. “Her runner-up race at NCAAs has given her a new level of confidence and we felt that it was smart to run her in Boston because she is so fit right now.

“Today’s run was out of the ball park. I’m very happy for Sarah and coach (Jill) Miller, and I’m excited for Sarah’s future in 2015.”

In addition, Disanza’s time ranks second in the world this year behind only Molly Huddle’s time of 15:13.86.

The Badgers resume indoor competition on Saturday, Jan. 17 with their Badger Indoor Triangular against Tennessee State and Marquette at The Shell.
