Diego Estrada: Learning the tools of his trade

Home /  Race  /  Trials Blog /  Diego Estrada: Learning the tools of his trade

November 13, 2015
Diego Estrada isn’t afraid of hard work. And that has been a problem.
Landscaping? He’s been doing it since he was 10 years old, helping his father, Francisco, turn plain back yards into small paradises. Gutting a house? He bought a fixer-upper in Flagstaff, AZ, in 2014 and for five weeks that spring spent 60 hours a week ripping out drywall, tearing up floors, taking out windows, you name it.
In the process, he was demolishing more than just his living quarters.
“I would have a good workout and then struggle for over a week to have another decent one,” Estrada said in a telephone interview this week. “I just felt like I was running out of gas. At night, I couldn’t sleep: It felt like I had done a road trip and was tired but was jacked on caffeine.”
Blood tests showed that his levels of cortisol—which the body produces to cope with stress—were “off the charts.” Much of his track season ended up on the rubbish pile.
Estrada learned his lesson. Since then, PlayStation and the TV remote have been his allies in winning a pair of national titles, at 5K in September 2014 and in the half marathon last January. He won the latter in 1:00:51—the seventh-fastest time ever by an American—in his first serious attempt at racing 13.1 miles.
After competing in the .US National 12K this Sunday, where last year he finished as runner-up by one second, the 26-year-old will buckle down to train for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles on February 13, where he will make his debut at the distance.
“I’m not really nervous, but I am aware that it’s not an ideal situation,” said Estrada, whose 1:00:51 currently ranks him as the fastest half-marathon Trials qualifier by more than a minute. “I’m just trying to tell myself that if it doesn’t work out then it’s not the end of the world, and trying to be mature with it and look at it as one of those circuit races I’ve been doing with a bunch of American athletes, and … yeah, I guess I’m slightly nervous.”
He expects to have plenty of support on the course. Born in Mexico, Estrada came to the U.S. when he was 13 months old, settling with his family in East Salinas, CA, about 300 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Those California roots drove him to pester his coach, Joe Vigil, into letting him attack the marathon distance sooner rather than later.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever have another Olympic Trials basically at home,” he said, predicting that he could have up to 50 friends and relatives cheering for him on every loop, backed up by fans from a county boasting the largest Latino population in the U.S. “I was going to have a big argument with my coach if he didn’t allow me to run. Fortunately, it didn’t come down to that.” Vigil, who coached Deena Kastor to her Olympic bronze medal, finally gave the thumbs up in late September.
Should Estrada make the team, it won’t be his first Olympics. Although he became a U.S. citizen in 2011, confusion over his eligibility to compete for this country led him to accept an invitation from Mexico to run the 10,000 meters at the 2012 London Games. Grateful for the opportunity, Estrada nonetheless acknowledges that his heart wasn’t entirely in it.
“Hopefully I make a U.S. team and get to experience it differently,” he said.
Meanwhile, he is relishing his new identity as marathoner-to-be.
“I’m loving the atmosphere, the positive vibes of people, the support,” he said. “Everybody’s so involved, especially in Flagstaff; everybody’s gearing up for this, and it kind of makes me feel that I’m one of the cool kids now.”

Juan Diego Estrada Constantino (born 1989 in Chilchota, Michoacán)[2] is a Mexican American long-distance runner. He competed in the 10,000 metres at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London for Mexico.[3] After some confusion about his eligibility after becoming a U.S. citizen, he was excluded from the U.S. Olympic trials even though it was later known that Estrada was misinformed on his eligibility possibilities.[4] Estrada resides in Flagstaff, Arizona.
He became eligible to represent the United States internationally in May 2014.[5]

Running career[edit]

High school[edit]

Estrada attended Alisal High School (Salinas, California), for which he competed in track. In cross country he qualified three times for states, and in the outdoor track season he finished fourth in the 3200-meter, recording a high school personal-best time of 9:04.80.[6]

Collegiate[edit]

Estrada was recruited by Northern Arizona, where he decided to major in Spanish for secondary education.[7]
In his sophomore year with Northern Arizona University, one of his lungs collapsed, and Estrada's career was brought into question.[8] Estrada ran NCAA regional qualifying 10K time at the Payton JordanStanford Cardinal Invitational (28:40.19) & NCAA regional qualifying 5K (13:49.35) in the 5K at the Mt. SAC Relays.
In his junior year, Estrada opened outdoor season with the third-fastest 1,500m time in NAU history at the Mt. SAC Relays when he crossed the finish line in 3:41.80 ... At the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships, finished fourth overall in a NAU indoor-record time of 13:29.01 for first All-America award on the track.
Redshirt year, Estrada ran a personal-best time in the 10K (27:32.90) at the Payton Jordan Invitational as an unattached athlete to punch his ticket to London ... Competed in front of 80,000 fans at London'sOlympic Stadium on August 4 in the Athletics at the 2012 Summer Olympics, finishing 21st in a time of 28:36.19.
In his senior year, Estrada finished in third place in the 5000-meter race at the 2013 NCAA D1 Outdoor T&F Championships. Estrada earned his eighth and ninth All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in record fashion with a runner-up finish in the 5,000m (13:30.24), the second-fastest all time indoors at NAU, and a fourth-place mark in the 3,000 meters (7:49.53), the third-fastest in NAU history. Estrada capped his year at the International Association of Athletics Federations2013 World Championships in Athletics where he finished 25th in the 5000 meters semi-final while representing Mexico.[9]

Post-collegiate[edit]

Diego Estrada is an Asics sponsored runner[10] and coached by Joe Vigil, known for his spell with Adams State and coaching Pat Porter.

2014-5[edit]

Diego Estrada finished 1st at 2014 USA Road 5k Championships Watch the 2014 men's 5k.[11] Estrada won his 2nd USATF Title[12] in Houston on January 18, 2015 by running the 7th fastest American half marathon[13] ever in 60:51.[14]

Minooka rises to 11 as NXN MW looms

By Adam Kopet for DyeStat

Two big weekends filled with state meets have brought a variety of upsets and interesting performances and new intrigue heading into NXN regional meets. So the rankings have been shaken up some, but the podium spots remain the same, but after that, there have been some significant changes.

NXN regional meets in the Midwest, which is stacked, Heartland and Northwest all appear to be wide open as some teams appear to be peaking while others might slip. No. 6 Edina and No. 10 Centerville OH are new to the top 10 after winning their state meets. Minooka IL races all the way up to 11 with their huge performance in Illinois and knocking off Naperville North. And Birmingham Seaholm rises to No. 16 after winning the Michigan D1 title by 46 points.

Desert Vista AZ (previously the No. 11 team) takes a tumble with its off day at the Arizona state meet, but on most days we'd still pick them against Chandler, which gets the No. 30 spot.

Sandburg retains top spot with IL win

By Paul Schmitz for DyeStat

The Woodlands TX zooms up this week after the Highlanders destroyed the competition in the Texas 6A meet with 24 points.  Led by No. 1 finisher Daniel Golden (16:17) and No. 2 finisher Noah Wells, The Woodlands 16:27 average on the mud-filled course was impressive. They beat second place Southlake Carroll's top-five team average by more than 40 seconds.

In New York, consider this: Liverpool beat Fayetteville-Manlius 32-36 in the Section 3 Championships and F-M did not make it to its state meet. These teams are virtually inseparable at No. 12 and No. 13.

Lyons Township of Illinois impressed with a strong second place finish behind US#1 Sandburg, which won its first Class 3A team title, and is in the rankings at No. 17. Rockford MI also enters the rankings, led by individual champion Isaac Harding (15:10) and third-place finisher Cole Johnson (15:15).

Downingtown West continued its fantastic season with a convincing win at Pennsylvania state meet. The Whippets scored 57 points to runner-up North Allegheny’s 105 and had a 16:08 team average.

One of the upsets of the week came in North Carolina's Class 4A meet where regional No. 4 Mount Tabor beat previous US#8 Needham Broughton and won its first team championship in 27 years. Mount Tabor moves into the rankings at No. 26.  Staying in the Southeast, Trinity Prep Florida won its Class 2A (of 4 classes) title handily but just misses our top 30.  Trinity was bumpbed by new entrant  St. Xavier of Kentucky, which won the 3A title with five finishers in the top 11.

In Iowa, Dowling Catholic (16:06 team average) eked out a 10 point win over unranked Cedar Falls High (16:10 team average).  Dowling stays on our watchlist but drops from the top 30.  In Ohio, St. Ignatius ran a very fast 15:51 average on the way to a 30 point win, but Mason (16:04 average) and Solon (16:01 average) both ran fast, too.  La Salle RI returns to the rankings with its impressive state meet win.

Things get complicated in the Heartland, where we are placing Edina back in front of Minneapolis Washburn even though Washburn beat them head to head two weeks ago in Section 6AA. Edina qualified three individuals, but not a whole team. Those three runners all ran great and give the team a boost. US#10 Hopkins looks like the team to beat, but Edina showed enough improvement that they are our pick for the No. 2 spot at NXN Heartland.

Other teams to watch not mentioned so far:  St. Thomas Aquinas KS went 1-4 in the Kansas 5A meet and finished with a 16:12 top-five average. Tahoma (4A) and North Central (3A) won their Washington state meet races with identical 15:48 5K top-five averages.  Both appear to be rounding into form just in time for NXN Northwest.

Ben Rainero's up-to-date results

As a Junior (2014-15)

Rainero led the Big Red in the Paul Short Run (19th, 25:10) and at Princeton (13th, 24:29). At Ivy League Cross Country Heptagonals, he finished 24th (25:01.4), helping the Big Red to a second-place team finish.

On the track, Rainero took over as no. 5 all-time in Cornell history in the 1500, finishing in 3:45.81 at Bucknell. He also won the 3000 in 8:19.43 at the Upstate Challenge and the 800 in 1:55.51 at the SPIRE Invitational. He came in second in the mile at IC4A Championships with a time of 4:07.68. At Ivy Indoor Heptagonals, he ran the fastest mile relay split of the day (4:08.4) to help the Big Red place fourth in the distance medley relay.

As a Sophomore (2013-14)
Rainero had a solid sophomore year, beginning with a 4th place finish at the season-opener against Army with a time of 25:24.1. He also ran at the Boston College Invitational and at the Pre-National Meet. He ended the season at the Ivy League/Heptagonal Championships where he finished 47th with his season-best time of 24:45.6.

On the track, Rainero had a solid sophomore season in the middle distances for the Big Red. He kicked off his indoor campaign with a strong showing at the Robert J. Kane Invitational. He marked a 8:34.22 in the 3000 to take home 1st place, while he helped the 4x8 relay team to a 2nd place finish at the event. He came just short of breaking his career best 1000 time, posting a 2:29.36 to take 2nd place at the Deneault Memorial. At the Indoor Heps, he helped the distance medley relay team to a 4th place finish. The following week he again helped the distance medley relay team to a 4th place finish. Outdoors, he posted a new career best of 3:47.33 in the 1500, bringing home 10th place at the Bison Outdoor Classic.

As a Freshman (2012-13)
Rainero had a great freshman campaign, making Cornell's Heps roster and finishing seventh among the Big Red runners -- the highest-finishing freshman on the team. Rainero's season began with a 27th-place showing at the Yellowjacket Invitational, and he followed that with a 34th-place effort at the Princeton Invitational. He also took eighth at the John Reif Memorial Run's five-mile race.

On the track, Rainero qualified for the Indoor IC4As and ran in the mile, taking 26th place with a time of 4:13.81 to set a new personal record. The freshman took part in 13 events for Cornell during his first year with the team.

Before Cornell
Rainero ran the middle distance track events along with cross country for two years in high school. He placed 11th at the California state track championship in 2011 and was 10h at the USATF Junior National Championships in 2012.
Personal
Benjamin Rainero de Haan is the son of Pieter de Haan and Ruth Rainero. He has an older sister, Ilana.

STANFORD MEN ADVANCE, WOMEN WAIT

Card teams compete in NCAA Regional Cross Country

SEATTLE – The Stanford men finished second at the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships on Friday, earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.

The Cardinal women were fourth (121 points) and will require an at-large berth to advance. The fields for the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky, will be announced Sunday.

The top two teams in each of nine regionals around the country qualified automatically. Thirteen more advance at-large to create a pair of 31-team fields. Stanford is seeking to advance both teams to the NCAA’s for the 22nd consecutive year.

In the men’s race, Stanford scored 83 points to trail only Washington’s 63. Oregon, paced by winner Edward Cheserek, was third with 99. Two-time defending NCAA champion Cheserek ran 30:43.2 over 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) at Jefferson Park Golf Course to win. Stanford placed three runners among the top eight.

Sean McGorty, the Pac-12 runner-up behind Cheserek, ran in the lead pack much of the way, but faded after Cheserek broke free late in the race. Still, McGorty worked together with teammates Jim and Joe Rosa to finish solidly.

Jim Rosa, Stanford’s No. 5 runner in his season debut at the Pac-12 Championships on Oct. 30, was the Cardinal’s No. 1 on Friday, leading a group of three that finished within one second of each other. Jim Rosa ran 31:14.9, McGorty ran 31:15.1, and Jim’s twin brother Joe Rosa ran 31:15.3.

At the NCAA Championships at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Stanford is expected to have two of its top runners available who were rested Friday, freshman Grant Fisher and junior Jack Keelan.

The Stanford women were a distant 41 points behind Boise State for the second automatic qualifying spot. Oregon (79) won and Washington was (105). Stanford ran without two-time Pac-12 champion Aisling Cuffe, who sat out as an injury precaution, but is expected to race at nationals.

Instead, Sophie Chase led the Cardinal. It was the first time in her career that the junior has finished as Stanford’s No. 1. Chase covered the 8K (3.73-mile) course in 21:04.6 to place 15th, with sophomore Julia Maxwell next for the Cardinal in 18th (21:06.4). It was Maxwell’s highest-ever team placing as well.

The Cardinal benefited from balance. All seven finished within 24 seconds of each other and were separated by 24 places. The individual winner was Boise State freshman Allie Ostrander, who ran 20:10.9.

Media outlets project the Stanford women to advance based on season points accumulated against qualifying teams in an at-large qualifying system. The Cardinal is seeking its 23rd consecutive NCAA team berth.

Seattle, Wash. –– At the NCAA West Regionals held at Jefferson Golf Course in Seattle, Wash. on Friday afternoon, the USF women's cross country team ran an extremely strong race, finishing fifth overall (182 points) in the field of 35 teams.

USF was led by freshman phenom Weronika Pyzik, who placed with a time of 20:52.7, the best finish from a Don at regionals in program history. Pyzik also represented the second finisher from a West Coast Conference school, coming in right after Gonzaga's Shelby Mills, the winner of the WCC Championships.

Redshirt junior Elena Burkard turned in another strong performance, placing 16th with a time of 21:04.9. The next Don to finish was Charlotte Taylor, who ran the course in 21:11.3 to take 23rd overall. Following Taylor was Tatjana Schulte in 46th place with a time of 21:31.9 and Daryl Phill (22:16.1) in 90th.

With their top 25 performances on Friday, Pyzik, Burkard and Taylor were named to the All-West Region team. It marked the highest combined top three performances at regionals in USF cross country history.

"I am so pleased with how our women ran today," said head cross country coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We beat every team we were capable of beating and battled all the way to the finish. If we get the opportunity to compete next weekend, we can be even better than we were today."

Emma Stähr (23:16.0) and Kelsey Nielsen (23:40.2) also competed for the Dons, taking 173rd and 199th respectively.

Ahead of the Dons in the team standings were Oregon, who won the region title with a score of 79, followed by Boise State (80), Washington (105) and Stanford (121). Individually, Allie Ostrander of Boise State took home first place with a time of 20:10.9, beating the second place finisher by just over 21 seconds. Oregon and Boise State finished first and second in the team standings to gain an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

On Saturday, the NCAA will announce which teams, along with individual qualifiers, will receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Louisville, KY. Please stay tuned to @DonsXCTF and @DonsAthletics on Twitter to find out which Dons qualified for the NCAA Championships next Saturday.

Golden Bear Men Earn At-Large Status After Finishing Sixth At NCAA West Regional

SEATTLE, Wash.– The California men’s cross country team earned an at-large bid for the upcoming NCAA Cross Country Championships after a stellar showing this season that culminated in a sixth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional Championships that were held Friday at Jefferson Golf Course in Seattle.
The Cal men were sixth with 146 points after being led by a 19th-place individual finish from senior Chris Walden.
"Both men and women ran their best team effort for the year," California Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Tony Sandoval said. "We're thrilled that the men qualified as an at - large team.  We know anything can happen at NCAA's and we believe we can run better in Louisville. We ran there in October and it helps that were familiar with the course."
The Cal women placed seventh overall with 234 points behind a 28th-place individual finish from Mariel Mendoza.
"The women ran tough today but not having Bethan Knight hurt our chances to qualify the women to NCAA's as well," Sandoval said. "They have really pulled together in her absence."
California's NCAA Championships bid is the first for the men since the team claimed 31st in 2010.
Walden and John Lawson both earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors for their performances Friday. Walden was 19th at 31:33.2, and Lawson was 25th at 31:44.7.
Oregon won the women's team title, and Washington won the men's team title.

Division I XC All-Region Honorees Announced for 2015

By Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA
November 13, 2015

NEW ORLEANS– All-Region honorees for NCAA Division I Cross Country were recognized Friday evening by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the day’s NCAA regional championships meets.
A total of 450 student-athletes (225 men and 225 women) earned the distinction by finishing among the top 25 individual finishers at one of the nine regional sites across the country. Only athletes competing for USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for the award.

Only two teams in the country were deep enough on Friday to earn seven All-Region awards, and it’s a pairing that portends a spectacular match-up at the NCAA Championships in Louisville next Saturday: the men of No. 1 Colorado and No. 2 Syracuse. The Buffaloes won the Mountain and the Orangemen claimed the Northeast.
Four women’s teams were represented on the All-Region list by six runners. Mountain champion No. 2 Colorado, South Central champion No. 3 Arkansas, Great Lakes champion No. 7 Michigan and Mid-Atlantic champion No. 14 Georgetown.
Northeast men’s runner-up No. 9 Iona also earned six All-Region honors.
Led by the Syracuse men, no conference in the country scored more All-Region honors than the 30 amassed by the ACC. Next up was the Pac-12 led by Colorado with 25, followed by the Big Ten with 24 and the SEC with 22.
The ACC was also the top women’s conference with 27 honorees. Then came the SEC with 25, the Big Ten with 24 and both the Big 12 and Pac-12 with 21 apiece.
Freshman runners – including West Region women’s champ Allie Ostrander of Boise State – accounted for 33 of the women’s awards and 16 of the men’s.
Five women’s teams featured two All-Region honorees – all of which finished first or second in their regions’ team standings. Those include Mountain champion No. 2 Colorado and South champion No. 27 Vanderbilt, as well as West runner-up No. 9 Boise State, Southeast runner-up No. 8 NC State and Great Lakes runner-up No. 15 Notre Dame.
The men of Princeton and Lamar both depended on two frosh All-Region honorees.
The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be contested November 21 in Louisville, Kentucky, hosted by Louisville at the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. The meet will be broadcast live online at NCAA.com.
Regional athletes and coaches of the year will be announced Tuesday.
