Diego Estrada: Learning the tools of his trade
Diego Estrada: Learning the tools of his trade
November 13, 2015
Diego Estrada isn’t afraid of hard work. And that has been a problem.
Landscaping? He’s been doing it since he was 10 years old, helping his father, Francisco, turn plain back yards into small paradises. Gutting a house? He bought a fixer-upper in Flagstaff, AZ, in 2014 and for five weeks that spring spent 60 hours a week ripping out drywall, tearing up floors, taking out windows, you name it.
In the process, he was demolishing more than just his living quarters.
“I would have a good workout and then struggle for over a week to have another decent one,” Estrada said in a telephone interview this week. “I just felt like I was running out of gas. At night, I couldn’t sleep: It felt like I had done a road trip and was tired but was jacked on caffeine.”
Blood tests showed that his levels of cortisol—which the body produces to cope with stress—were “off the charts.” Much of his track season ended up on the rubbish pile.
Estrada learned his lesson. Since then, PlayStation and the TV remote have been his allies in winning a pair of national titles, at 5K in September 2014 and in the half marathon last January. He won the latter in 1:00:51—the seventh-fastest time ever by an American—in his first serious attempt at racing 13.1 miles.
After competing in the .US National 12K this Sunday, where last year he finished as runner-up by one second, the 26-year-old will buckle down to train for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles on February 13, where he will make his debut at the distance.
“I’m not really nervous, but I am aware that it’s not an ideal situation,” said Estrada, whose 1:00:51 currently ranks him as the fastest half-marathon Trials qualifier by more than a minute. “I’m just trying to tell myself that if it doesn’t work out then it’s not the end of the world, and trying to be mature with it and look at it as one of those circuit races I’ve been doing with a bunch of American athletes, and … yeah, I guess I’m slightly nervous.”
He expects to have plenty of support on the course. Born in Mexico, Estrada came to the U.S. when he was 13 months old, settling with his family in East Salinas, CA, about 300 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Those California roots drove him to pester his coach, Joe Vigil, into letting him attack the marathon distance sooner rather than later.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever have another Olympic Trials basically at home,” he said, predicting that he could have up to 50 friends and relatives cheering for him on every loop, backed up by fans from a county boasting the largest Latino population in the U.S. “I was going to have a big argument with my coach if he didn’t allow me to run. Fortunately, it didn’t come down to that.” Vigil, who coached Deena Kastor to her Olympic bronze medal, finally gave the thumbs up in late September.
Should Estrada make the team, it won’t be his first Olympics. Although he became a U.S. citizen in 2011, confusion over his eligibility to compete for this country led him to accept an invitation from Mexico to run the 10,000 meters at the 2012 London Games. Grateful for the opportunity, Estrada nonetheless acknowledges that his heart wasn’t entirely in it.
“Hopefully I make a U.S. team and get to experience it differently,” he said.
Meanwhile, he is relishing his new identity as marathoner-to-be.
“I’m loving the atmosphere, the positive vibes of people, the support,” he said. “Everybody’s so involved, especially in Flagstaff; everybody’s gearing up for this, and it kind of makes me feel that I’m one of the cool kids now.”

Minooka rises to 11 as NXN MW looms
By Adam Kopet for DyeStat
Two big weekends filled with state meets have brought a variety of upsets and interesting performances and new intrigue heading into NXN regional meets. So the rankings have been shaken up some, but the podium spots remain the same, but after that, there have been some significant changes.
NXN regional meets in the Midwest, which is stacked, Heartland and Northwest all appear to be wide open as some teams appear to be peaking while others might slip. No. 6 Edina and No. 10 Centerville OH are new to the top 10 after winning their state meets. Minooka IL races all the way up to 11 with their huge performance in Illinois and knocking off Naperville North. And Birmingham Seaholm rises to No. 16 after winning the Michigan D1 title by 46 points.
Desert Vista AZ (previously the No. 11 team) takes a tumble with its off day at the Arizona state meet, but on most days we'd still pick them against Chandler, which gets the No. 30 spot.

Sandburg retains top spot with IL win
By Paul Schmitz for DyeStat
The Woodlands TX zooms up this week after the Highlanders destroyed the competition in the Texas 6A meet with 24 points. Led by No. 1 finisher Daniel Golden (16:17) and No. 2 finisher Noah Wells, The Woodlands 16:27 average on the mud-filled course was impressive. They beat second place Southlake Carroll's top-five team average by more than 40 seconds.
In New York, consider this: Liverpool beat Fayetteville-Manlius 32-36 in the Section 3 Championships and F-M did not make it to its state meet. These teams are virtually inseparable at No. 12 and No. 13.
Lyons Township of Illinois impressed with a strong second place finish behind US#1 Sandburg, which won its first Class 3A team title, and is in the rankings at No. 17. Rockford MI also enters the rankings, led by individual champion Isaac Harding (15:10) and third-place finisher Cole Johnson (15:15).
Downingtown West continued its fantastic season with a convincing win at Pennsylvania state meet. The Whippets scored 57 points to runner-up North Allegheny’s 105 and had a 16:08 team average.
One of the upsets of the week came in North Carolina's Class 4A meet where regional No. 4 Mount Tabor beat previous US#8 Needham Broughton and won its first team championship in 27 years. Mount Tabor moves into the rankings at No. 26. Staying in the Southeast, Trinity Prep Florida won its Class 2A (of 4 classes) title handily but just misses our top 30. Trinity was bumpbed by new entrant St. Xavier of Kentucky, which won the 3A title with five finishers in the top 11.
In Iowa, Dowling Catholic (16:06 team average) eked out a 10 point win over unranked Cedar Falls High (16:10 team average). Dowling stays on our watchlist but drops from the top 30. In Ohio, St. Ignatius ran a very fast 15:51 average on the way to a 30 point win, but Mason (16:04 average) and Solon (16:01 average) both ran fast, too. La Salle RI returns to the rankings with its impressive state meet win.
Things get complicated in the Heartland, where we are placing Edina back in front of Minneapolis Washburn even though Washburn beat them head to head two weeks ago in Section 6AA. Edina qualified three individuals, but not a whole team. Those three runners all ran great and give the team a boost. US#10 Hopkins looks like the team to beat, but Edina showed enough improvement that they are our pick for the No. 2 spot at NXN Heartland.
Other teams to watch not mentioned so far: St. Thomas Aquinas KS went 1-4 in the Kansas 5A meet and finished with a 16:12 top-five average. Tahoma (4A) and North Central (3A) won their Washington state meet races with identical 15:48 5K top-five averages. Both appear to be rounding into form just in time for NXN Northwest.

STANFORD MEN ADVANCE, WOMEN WAIT
Card teams compete in NCAA Regional Cross Country
SEATTLE – The Stanford men finished second at the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships on Friday, earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.
The Cardinal women were fourth (121 points) and will require an at-large berth to advance. The fields for the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky, will be announced Sunday.
The top two teams in each of nine regionals around the country qualified automatically. Thirteen more advance at-large to create a pair of 31-team fields. Stanford is seeking to advance both teams to the NCAA’s for the 22nd consecutive year.
In the men’s race, Stanford scored 83 points to trail only Washington’s 63. Oregon, paced by winner Edward Cheserek, was third with 99. Two-time defending NCAA champion Cheserek ran 30:43.2 over 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) at Jefferson Park Golf Course to win. Stanford placed three runners among the top eight.
Sean McGorty, the Pac-12 runner-up behind Cheserek, ran in the lead pack much of the way, but faded after Cheserek broke free late in the race. Still, McGorty worked together with teammates Jim and Joe Rosa to finish solidly.
Jim Rosa, Stanford’s No. 5 runner in his season debut at the Pac-12 Championships on Oct. 30, was the Cardinal’s No. 1 on Friday, leading a group of three that finished within one second of each other. Jim Rosa ran 31:14.9, McGorty ran 31:15.1, and Jim’s twin brother Joe Rosa ran 31:15.3.
At the NCAA Championships at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Stanford is expected to have two of its top runners available who were rested Friday, freshman Grant Fisher and junior Jack Keelan.
The Stanford women were a distant 41 points behind Boise State for the second automatic qualifying spot. Oregon (79) won and Washington was (105). Stanford ran without two-time Pac-12 champion Aisling Cuffe, who sat out as an injury precaution, but is expected to race at nationals.
Instead, Sophie Chase led the Cardinal. It was the first time in her career that the junior has finished as Stanford’s No. 1. Chase covered the 8K (3.73-mile) course in 21:04.6 to place 15th, with sophomore Julia Maxwell next for the Cardinal in 18th (21:06.4). It was Maxwell’s highest-ever team placing as well.
The Cardinal benefited from balance. All seven finished within 24 seconds of each other and were separated by 24 places. The individual winner was Boise State freshman Allie Ostrander, who ran 20:10.9.
Media outlets project the Stanford women to advance based on season points accumulated against qualifying teams in an at-large qualifying system. The Cardinal is seeking its 23rd consecutive NCAA team berth.

Division I XC All-Region Honorees Announced for 2015
Division I XC All-Region Honorees Announced for 2015

By Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA
November 13, 2015
NEW ORLEANS– All-Region honorees for NCAA Division I Cross Country were recognized Friday evening by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the day’s NCAA regional championships meets.
A total of 450 student-athletes (225 men and 225 women) earned the distinction by finishing among the top 25 individual finishers at one of the nine regional sites across the country. Only athletes competing for USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for the award.

Only two teams in the country were deep enough on Friday to earn seven All-Region awards, and it’s a pairing that portends a spectacular match-up at the NCAA Championships in Louisville next Saturday: the men of No. 1 Colorado and No. 2 Syracuse. The Buffaloes won the Mountain and the Orangemen claimed the Northeast.
Four women’s teams were represented on the All-Region list by six runners. Mountain champion No. 2 Colorado, South Central champion No. 3 Arkansas, Great Lakes champion No. 7 Michigan and Mid-Atlantic champion No. 14 Georgetown.
Northeast men’s runner-up No. 9 Iona also earned six All-Region honors.
Led by the Syracuse men, no conference in the country scored more All-Region honors than the 30 amassed by the ACC. Next up was the Pac-12 led by Colorado with 25, followed by the Big Ten with 24 and the SEC with 22.
The ACC was also the top women’s conference with 27 honorees. Then came the SEC with 25, the Big Ten with 24 and both the Big 12 and Pac-12 with 21 apiece.
Freshman runners – including West Region women’s champ Allie Ostrander of Boise State – accounted for 33 of the women’s awards and 16 of the men’s.
Five women’s teams featured two All-Region honorees – all of which finished first or second in their regions’ team standings. Those include Mountain champion No. 2 Colorado and South champion No. 27 Vanderbilt, as well as West runner-up No. 9 Boise State, Southeast runner-up No. 8 NC State and Great Lakes runner-up No. 15 Notre Dame.
The men of Princeton and Lamar both depended on two frosh All-Region honorees.
The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be contested November 21 in Louisville, Kentucky, hosted by Louisville at the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. The meet will be broadcast live online at NCAA.com.
Regional athletes and coaches of the year will be announced Tuesday.
