USATF President and IAAF Council Member Stephanie Hightower on the IAAF Council action to provisionally suspend the Russian Federation:

Council examined this matter very thoughtfully, fully aware of the extraordinary action we ultimately decided to take. The WADA report was clear in its evidence and unequivocal in its recommendations. From Council's perspective, in light of the evidence, suspension was the only proper course of action. The IAAF has an obligation to protect athletes, and this action sends a clear message to clean athletes that protecting them and protecting the sport, with a culture of accountability, is our top priority. It is my hope as a Council member that this process also will spur a review of the IAAF governance structure, and that we will act to implement WADA's recommendations of instituting an ombudsman and compliance officer. Although this is a difficult time, in the long term, the sport ultimately will be stronger for it.

Fiona O'Keefe (Davis Senior HS, Davis, CA) is heading to Stanford next fall

Mason Myers and 2 others were mentioned in a post.
Super proud to say that Fiona is heading to Stanford next fall! She's going to be running track and cross country there, and of course, getting a fantastic education.
Here she is with her kick-ass coach, Bill Gregg, who played a huge part in her success.
There are a ton of people that are owed a massive "Thank You" for their help/coaching/support over the years, including Mason Myers, Joe Hartman, Kay Nekota, Spencer Elliott, Tim Groth, Tracey Bennett, David Gunther, Bob Bl...akewell - the list goes on (and on). And of course, her teammates and their families have been tremendous. (Apologies if I forgot to mention anyone.)
Oh, and the Stanford team is currently one of the best in the country, and she's going to be joined by 2 other top-ranked recruits, which should make the team a contender for the NCAA cross-country title for her entire time there. Crazy.
EDIT: That sweatshirt in the foreground was given to her by her grandfather and grandmother (Randall Williams and Margaret Williams) back when Fiona was in 5th grade. How did they know???

CARD WOMEN EARN CROSS COUNTRY AT-LARGE

Both Stanford teams advance to NCAA meet

STANFORD, Calif. -- For the 22nd consecutive year, both the Stanford men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Championships, extending the nation’s longest ongoing streak.

The Cardinal women received at-large bid on Saturday, a day after the NCAA West Regionals at Seattle’s Jefferson Park Golf Course. The men had qualified automatically by finishing second, but the Card women were fourth, missing automatic advancement. However, Stanford earned enough qualifying points through season results against teams already in the field to advance.

The top two teams in each of the nation’s nine regionals qualified automatically, and the top four individuals not on those teams who finished in the top 25 of their races. Thirteen teams in each of the men’s and women’s divisions received at-large berths, creating fields of 31. Also, two individuals were selected at-large for each race, creating fields of 255 individual entrants.

The NCAA Championships are Saturday, Nov. 21, at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The women’s race will begin at 9 a.m. PT (noon ET), followed by the men’s at approximately 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET). A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from 9 a.m. PT until the conclusion of the awards ceremony on NCAA.com.

This will be the 23rd consecutive NCAA team appearance for the Stanford women – the longest streak in the nation -- and 28th overall. Stanford has won five NCAA women’s titles (1996, 2003, 2005-07).

The Stanford men have advanced 22 consecutive years and 24 times overall. The Cardinal has won four men’s team championships (1996-97, 2002-03) and was second last year.

Stanford’s teams have had 66 All-Americans combine for 126 All-America honors. The teams have combined for 24 NCAA podium finishes and nine NCAA titles.

PRESS RELEASE

Statement from the IOC President Thomas Bach on the terrorist attacks in Paris

These attacks are deeply shocking. The IOC condemns these barbaric and cowardly acts.
This is not only an attack on the people of France and Paris, this is an attack on humanity and all humanitarian and Olympic Values
We stand united with all people from all around the globe. Our thoughts are of course with the families and friends of those who have been killed or wounded.
We support also the outstanding work of so many men and women in the medical and security fields who are assisting the population in these very difficult moments.
In these dark times, we should remember the unifying power of sport to unite people and communities and to bring peace and reconciliation.  Today all people of goodwill will say: We are all French.
Today,  I have sent a letter of condolence and support to President Hollande and I have ordered that the Olympic flag be put at half-mast to remember this tragedy.

INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE
PRESS RELEASE

Saturday 14 November 2015

Communique following the meeting of IOC President Bach and ROC President Zhukov

President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Alexander Zhukov  has met International Olympic Committee (IOC) IOC President Thomas Bach to discuss the findings of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Independent Commission Report.
Following the meeting, the ROC with the full backing of IOC will undertake the following actions:
1.     Mr Zhukov, as ROC President, informed the IOC President that in order to ensure the participation of the clean Russian athletes at the Olympic Games Rio de Janeiro 2016, the ROC will coordinate all efforts in Russia to address the issues mentioned in the Independent Commission Report with a view to make RUSADA, the anti-doping laboratory in Moscow and the National Athletics Federation (ARAF) compliant with the WADA code and all other international anti-doping regulations as soon as possible;
2.     To achieve this, the Russian Olympic Committee will ensure the coordination of the already ongoing thorough investigation by the national authorities in Russia with respective international organisations, including WADA and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF);
3.     The ROC will initiate the renewal and reform of the National Athletics Federation (ARAF). To achieve this:
· All officials, coaches, etc., implicated in doping will be held responsible and sanctioned;· All doped athletes will be sanctioned in accordance with international anti-doping regulations;· All clean athletes will be protected.
4.     Mr Zhukov, on behalf of the ROC, renewed his strong support of the decision taken at the Olympic Summit on 17 October to make the anti-doping system independent from sports organisations and to request that WADA take over this function as soon as possible.
“I welcome the fact that the ROC expressed its firm commitment to protect the clean athletes, and to sanction all the doped athletes and officials,” said President Bach.
“I appreciated very much the openness of the discussion and welcomed the fact that the Russian Olympic Committee will play the leading role. We are confident that the initiatives being proposed by the ROC, with the responsible international organisations, WADA and the IAAF, will ensure compliance as soon as possible in order to provide participation of the clean Russian athletes at the Olympic Games,” he added.
ROC President Zhukov added: “The Russian Olympic Committee is determined that the clean athletes should compete in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Anyone found guilty of using illegal drugs or anyone who facilitated or was complicit in their use must be punished.”

Senior Fiona O'Keefe (Davis), the defending champion, who is going to Stanford, did not run.  She has tendinitis.
Tendinitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon — any one of the thick fibrous cords that attaches muscle to bone. The condition causes pain and tenderness just outside a joint. mayoclinic.org
