Division III XC All-Region Honorees Announced for 2015

November 16, 2015

NEW ORLEANS– All-Region honorees for NCAA Division III Cross Country were recognized Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following last Saturday’s NCAA regional championship meets.
A total of 560 student-athletes (280 men and 280 women) from 244 programs earned the distinction by finishing among the top 35 individuals at one of eight regional sites across the country.
MORE: Regional Recap/Results | Regional Championships Central
There were five women’s teams and four men’s teams that landed all seven of their runners on the All-Region lists. Those women’s teams are Atlantic champion Geneseo State, South/Southeast champion Emory, New England champion Williams, West runner-up Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Mideast champion Johns Hopkins. Joining those women’s teams with that distinction are the following men’s teams – Mideast champion Haverford, West champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, West runner-up Pomona-Pitzer and Mideast third-place team Carnegie Mellon.
To break it down further, the men’s All-Region list was dominated by runners from NESCAC teams. Out of the 35 runners who earned All-Region honors from their effort in the New England Region, 33 were from the NESCAC. The next closest conferences were the SCIAC (22) and WIAC (21).
The top conference in the women’s All-Region list was the UAA (25) with the NESCAC (23) close behind.
The NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, November 21 at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisconsin.
A full list of the honorees can be found below. It is sorted alphabetically by team and then in descending order based on athletes’ finishes at the regional championships.
Only athletes from USTFCCCA member institutions are eligible for the award.

New Mexico No Longer Unanimous in Coaches’ Poll

Courtesyt By Tyler Mayforth, USTFCCCA
November 16, 2015

NEW ORLEANS– The dust has nearly settled on the 2015 NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country season. This coming Saturday will mark the final day of the season as 31 teams will vie for the national championship in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to the most recent National Coaches’ Poll, released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), New Mexico is still the clear-cut favorite to win the championship, but is no longer unanimous. The Lobos can thank No. 2 Colorado for that.

Last Friday, the Buffaloes beat New Mexico by one point for the Mountain Region title and took two first-place votes from Joe Franklin’s team a few days later. This marks the first time since the Week 3 poll that the Lobos shared first-place votes.
Elsewhere in the poll, dominant or surprising efforts at regional championships were rewarded – such was the case when it came to No. 4 Providence, No. 8 Boise State and No. 11 Oklahoma State.
The Friars, led by a second-place finish by Sarah Collins, ran away with the Northeast Region crown. Providence scored 49 points compared to runner-up Syracuse’s 92 and appears to be a solid contender to podium in five days.
And thanks to another win by standout freshman Allie Ostrander and a strong team effort behind her, the Broncos nearly authored another shocking upset – this time at the expense of No. 5 Oregon. Boise State romped to a team title at the Roy Griak Invitational earlier this season and would have added more hardware to its trophy case last Friday if the Ducks’ depth didn’t prevail.
The Cowgirls, ranked No. 30 in the preseason, continued their late-season surge. Fresh off a historic win at the Big 12 Championships, Oklahoma State made quick work of the field in Lawrence, Kansas for the Midwest Region crown. Three Cowgirls finished in the top-10 and Oklahoma State scored 51 points to runner-up Iowa State’s 98.
While the rest of the poll more or less remained the same other than an eight-spot jump by Vanderbilt, there were two new additions to the back end – Tulsa (tied for 27th) and San Francisco (No. 29). Both the Golden Hurricane and the Dons earned at-large berths to NCAAs following strong races at their respective regional meets. This is the first time since 2010 that Tulsa is ranked and San Francisco’s first appearance in the poll since 2013.
All but one team in the final poll of the season will contend for the NCAA title at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park this Saturday. No. 30 North Carolina was left out of the mix after it finished third in a cutthroat Southeast Region.

Wild Regional Weekend Jumbles Final DIII National Polls

By Tyler Mayforth, USTFCCCA
November 16, 2015

NEW ORLEANS– An absolutely wild weekend full of regional action shook up the final NCAA Division III Cross Country National Coaches’ Polls of the season.
In the polls, which were released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), only 12 of the 64 teams ranked last week (32 men’s, 32 women’s) remained in place. There were 11 teams that jumped five or more spots and six that fell six or more spots from the previous week.

Three teams that didn’t move were the top-3 in the men’s poll. No. 1 UW-Eau Claire captured the Midwest Region title over No. 3 North Central (Ill.) and No. 2 Williams edged No. 4 Amherst by one point for the New England crown. The Lord Jeffs, who had thought they won the region title, traded spots with No. 5 St. Olaf.
Likewise, the top-2 teams in the women’s poll were unaffected. No. 1 Johns Hopkins, the three-time defending national champion, is still unanimous and should be after it dismantled the field in the Mideast Region. No. 2 Williams made it look easy in the New England Region and appears to be a threat to a four-peat by the Blue Jays.
There were three teams that soared more than 10 spots from the previous week and they were the Elizabethtown men (No. 27 to No. 15), the Wesleyan (Conn.) men (No. 32 to No. 17) and the Wellesley women (No. 32 to No. 16). All three of those teams had surprising finishes in their respective regions as both Elizabethtown took second in the Mideast, Wesleyan (Conn.) finished fourth in the New England and Wellesley topped a few others to finish fifth in the New England women’s race.
Four teams fell eight or more spots – the MIT men (No. 8 to No. 21), the Washington (Mo.) men (No. 16 to No. 28), the Williamette men (No. 21 to No. 29) and the Rochester (N.Y.) women (No. 17 to No. 26).
Five teams returned to the poll, led by the UW-Platteville men. After receiving votes last week, UW-Platteville surged to tie for 17th after finishing fifth in the Midwest Region. The Wartburg men (No. 30), the Emory men (No. 31), the Allegheny (Pa.) women (No. 30) and the St. Olaf women (No. 31) are the others.
Most – if not, all – of these teams will be competing at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this weekend. The meet will be held Saturday at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wisconsin.

Stags first, Athenas second at NCAA D-III Cross Country Regionals

The CMS cross country teams finished first and second at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday, Nov. 14 and both teams qualified for the NCAA Championships.  Running in front of a crowd of alumni, friends and family across the street at the Pomona Wash in Claremont, the Stags, the region's top ranked team, beat #3 Pomona-Pitzer 51-62 in the men's race while the Athenas, ranked first in the region, finished second to third ranked Willamette 64-79 in the women's race.  This is the second year in a row that CMS has had all 14 competitors earn All-Region honors by finishing in the top 35 overall, and the third time this has happened for any team in region history.
The Stags won the region title for the third time in four years and for the seventh time in team history.  Zorg Loustalet (HMC SR) led the team as he has all season, with a third place finish running a time of 25:28.76. Claremont McKenna senior Evan Molineux finished in 8th, closely followed by Kyle Lund (HMC JR) in ninth.  The next four runners were Jack Wilson (CMC SR) 15th, Kevin Huang (HMC SO) 16th, Joshua Sealand (HMC SO) 20th and Jacob Higle-Ralbovsky (HMC SR) 26th.  Senior Loustalet earned All-Region honors for the fourth time, rounding out an impressive history of 1st, 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes at NCAA Regionals. Jack and Jacob earned their second All-Region honors. The Stags had the top finishing third, fourth, fifth and sixth runners in the race, which brought together 19 teams and 126 runners to compete.
The women finished 18 points ahead of #2 ranked Whitworth. The Athenas also had all seven runners earn All-Region honors.  Senior Bridget Blum led the Athenas as she has all season, with a strong finish to take 5th in a time of 21:58.59. Junior Jen Lehr (SCR) finished 9th, greatly improving upon her 17th place finish in 2014. Caroline Willian (CMC JR) was 16th, Laura Broderick  (SCR SO) was 23rd, Carmen Mejia (SCR JR) was 26th, Rachel Mow was 27th and Roselyn Cantu (CMC SO) was 30th. Bridget, Jen and Caroline earned All-Region honors for the second time. Rachel, Laura and Roselyn all earned All-Region honors for the first time in their regional debuts. 19 teams and 133 runners competed in the race.
By finishing in the top two, both teams automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships, which will take place November 21st in Winneconne, WI. The women will race at 11am, followed by the men at 12:30pm Central time. This will be the 8th straight year that both CMS will be competing at the National Championships. It will be the Athenas' 18th NCAA appearance and the 14th NCAA appearance for the Stags.

World Athlete of the Year 2015 women's finalists: Dibaba, Schippers and Wlodarczyk

Genzebe Dibaba, Dafne Schippers and Anita Wlodarczyk are the three women’s finalists for the 2015 IAAF World Athlete of the Year award.
Dibaba won the 1500m title at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015, having broken the world record in the event one month earlier with her time of 3:50.07 in Monaco. The Ethiopian also set a world indoor 5000m record of 14:18.86 and took the bronze medal at that distance at the World Championships.
Schippers clocked a European and championship record of 21.63 to win the 200m title in Beijing to go alongside the silver medal she took in the 100m where she set a Dutch record of 10.81. Earlier in the year, she set a world-leading mark of 7.05 over 60m.
Wlodarczyk was utterly dominant this season in the hammer. The Pole won all 11 of her competitions, including the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015. She also became the first woman to throw beyond 80 metres, setting a world record of 81.08m in Cetniewo in August.
Last month the IAAF Family* was asked to select nine men and nine women from each of the following categories: sprints, hurdles, middle and long distance, road running, race walking, jumps, throws, combined events and multi-terrain.
The top-voted athletes in each category formed the longlist, from which an international panel of 10 experts** selected the three finalists. The men’s finalists will be announced tomorrow.

*IAAF Family: IAAF & IAF Council members; IAAF national member federations; IAAF Committee & Commission members; IAAF meeting directors; IAAF athlete ambassadors; athletes’ representatives; top athletes; members of the international press; IAAF staff members and the IAAF’s official partners
**The international panel of athletics experts includes representatives from all six continental areas of the IAAF

The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be contested November 21 in Louisville, Kentucky, hosted by Louisville. The meet will be broadcast live online via NCAA.com.

MEN’S ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

GREAT LAKES REGION – Mason Ferlic, Michigan

Ferlic, a senior from Minneapolis, Minnesota, topped an exceptional field at the Great Lakes Regional with two second victory over Big Ten champion Matt McClintock of Purdue. The win was his third of the season, to go along with a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships and a top-15 finish at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.

MID-ATLANTIC REGION – Patrick Tiernan, Villanova

All Tiernan has done in 2015 is win. In five races this year the junior from Toowoomba, Australia, has yet to be defeated, with his most recent victory coming in a 26-second win at the Mid-Atlantic Region Championships. He also scored a 21-second win at the Big EAST Championships to become the first man to win the conference three years in a row.

MIDWEST REGION – Marc Scott, Tulsa

No one has been able to top Scott in 2015. The senior from North Yorkshire, England, is unbeaten in four races this season, including a one-second win at the Midwest Regional and another close win at the exceptionally deep Wisconsin adidas Invitational. He also claimed the American Athletic Conference title.

MOUNTAIN REGION – Anthony Rotich, UTEP

Rotich, a senior from Nairobi, Kenya, finished side-by-side with teammate Jonah Koech to go 1-2 at the Mountain Regional Championships – technically finishing runner-up by less than a tenth of a second. But it was Rotich who has emerged as the top Miner for much of the season, including wins at the Notre Dame Invitational and the Conference USA Championships. He was also third overall at the Pre-National Invitational.

NORTHEAST REGION – Justyn Knight, Syracuse

Knight, a sophomore from Vaughan, Ontario, in Canada, led a Syracuse 1-2-3 sweep at the Northeast Regional Championships. He finished no lower than runner-up all season long, as he started his season with a win at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown and finished runner-up at both the Wisconsin adidas Invitational and the ACC Championships.

SOUTH REGION – Antibahs Kosgei, Alabama

Kosgei, a junior from Eldoret, Kenya, has stood out in his first season at the NCAA level after transferring from NJCAA South Plains College. He claimed the South Region title by 10 seconds as part of a three-win season. He also crossed the line first at the SEC Championships, and won his NCAA debut at the Memphis Twilight Classic.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION – Brian Barraza, Houston

Barraza, a junior El Paso, Texas, won the South Central Region title in a two-second victory over Lamar’s Iliass Aouani. The win was his third of the season, along with wins at the Texas A&M and Rice invitationals. He was fourth in the American Athletic Conference and 25th at Pre-Nationals.

SOUTHEAST REGION – Thomas Curtin, Virginia Tech

Curtin, a senior from Leesburg, Virginia, added to an impressive season with a strong four-second win in the Southeast Region this past weekend. The victory was his third in a row, coming after an ACC Championships win and a victory over two-time defending national champion Edward Cheserek at the Pre-National Invitational.

WEST REGION – Edward Cheserek, Oregon

Cheserek, a junior from Newark, New Jersey, is looking to become the first man in NCAA Division I history to win three consecutive individual national titles. His regular season indicated he’s in form to accomplish just that, with decisive victories at the Pac-12 and West Region championships. He also won the Washington Invitational and finished runner-up at the Pre-National Invitational.

WOMEN’S ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

GREAT LAKES REGION – Molly Seidel, Notre Dame

The senior from Hartland, Wisconsin is picking the perfect way to wrap up her senior season. Following an easy win at the ACC Championships, Seidel put the field in the rearview mirror after 4K and pulled away for a 14-second win. The 2014 NCAA 10K champ has only raced four times this season, but each of those outings she finished third or better including a second-place finish at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational where she ran faster than the course record.

MID-ATLANTIC REGION – Blanca Fernandez, Temple

Using a strong kick in the final 400 meters, the senior from Leon, Spain surged to a win in the Mid-Atlantic Region. This was Fernandez’s sixth race of the season and she’s registered nothing but low stick for Temple. Fernandez also won the Big 5 Cross Country Invitational, the Main Line Invitational, the Paul Short Run, the Princeton Invitational and finally the American Athletic Conference championship.

MIDWEST REGION – Erin Teschuk, North Dakota State

With a majority of runners in the Midwest Region focused on qualifying their teams for NCAAs, the senior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada dedicated her energy on an individual crown. She did just that Friday afternoon as she beat the runner-up to the line by five seconds. This was her third consecutive win of the season, as she also won at the Summit League Championships and the Stanford Invitational in September.

MOUNTAIN REGION – Hannah Everson, Air Force

With so much talk about runners from Colorado and New Mexico, it would be easy for people to forget about the junior from Colorado Springs, Colorado. Well, they won’t after her performance at the Mountain Region Championships. Everson distanced herself from the pack and won the individual title by 10 seconds in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This was Everson’s second win of the season and her fifth top-3 finish in six meets.

NORTHEAST REGION – Dana Giordano, Dartmouth

Progression was the name of the game for the senior from Bernardsville, New Jersey. After a 19th-place showing at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, Giordano took second at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships and then earned her biggest win of the season Friday morning at Franklin Park in Massachusetts. Giordano qualified for her third consecutive trip to NCAAs and went from 29th in the Northeast as a freshman to 17th as a sophomore to eighth as a junior and then won as a senior.

SOUTH REGION – Chelsea Blaase, Tennessee

With a second consecutive trip to the NCAAs on the line, the senior from St. Joseph, Illinois wasn’t about to let it slip through her fingers. Using the experience she gained from finishing second at the Southeastern Conference Championships and third at the Pre-National Invitational, Blaase dug deep and surged to the region South Region crown.

SOUTHEAST REGION – Letitia Saayman, Coastal Carolina

In a region packed with four ranked teams, the senior from Pretoria, South Africa rose to the challenge once again. Saayman, the 2015 Big South Conference champion, found an extra gear and pulled away down the stretch for the biggest win of her collegiate career. She earned her second consecutive trip to NCAAs and based on her 11th-place finish at the Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky in October, an All-American honor might be in her future.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION – Dominique Scott, Arkansas

Familiarity bred success for the senior from Cape Town, South Africa. Two weeks ago Scott became the first female runner in the history of the Southeastern Conference to win three consecutive individual titles. That victory came on the same course she ran Friday morning in the South Central Region Championships. Scott broke away late at nearly the same spot and took home the championship there as well. That was her third victory of the season as she also won at the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in October.

WEST REGION – Allie Ostrander, Boise State

The freshman from Kenai, Alaska announced her presence with a course record at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. Then Ostrander romped to an easy win at the Mountain West Conference Championships. Not too long after, she continued her incredible freshman year with a historic win at the West Region Championships. Ostrander won by 22 seconds over a talented field and led Boise State to a second-place finish, just one point back of champion Oregon.

MEN’S COACHES OF THE YEAR

GREAT LAKES REGION – Kevin Sullivan, Michigan

Sullivan, in his second season guiding the Michigan men’s program, has made an immediate impact on the Wolverines’ program. For the first time since 1998 his No. 5 men won the Big Ten title, and two weeks later they claimed the team title at the Great Lakes Region Championships. Individual leader Mason Ferlic won the Great Lakes title and finished runner-up at the Big Ten Championships.

MID-ATLANTIC REGION – Steve Dolan, Penn

(Harry Groves Award)
Dolan, in his fourth year as the director of track & field and cross country at Penn, led his No. 21 Quakers to a place no Penn squad since 1975 had been: the NCAA Championships. With a runner-up finish at the Mid-Atlantic Region Championships, Dolan’s Penn squad grabbed the region’s second automatic qualifying bid. Penn finished runner-up in the Ivy League.

MIDWEST REGION – Steve Plasencia, Minnesota

(Roy Griak Award)
Few teams around the country showed better late-race strength so far this postseason than Plasencia’s No. 16 Golden Gophers. In his 20th season guiding Minnesota, he watched his squad rally from fifth to third over the final kilometer at the Big Ten Championships and from fourth to second over the last two miles at the Midwest Regional. The latter performance gave the Gophers their first NCAA team berth since 2011.

MOUNTAIN REGION – Mark Wetmore, Colorado

(Chick Hislop Award)
From the preseason all the way through the lead-up to the NCAA Championships, Wetmore – in his 21st season leading the Colorado men – has led the Buffaloes to the No. 1 rank in the National Coaches’ Poll. No one has topped Colorado in 2015, as the Buffaloes won the West Regional Championships, the Pac-12 Championships and the Pre-National Invitationals.

NORTHEAST REGION – Chris Fox, Syracuse

Fox, in his 11th year at the helm for Syracuse, has guided the program to one of its best seasons in history. The Orange have been No. 2 for a majority of their undefeated season with victories at the Northeast Regional, the ACC Championships, the Wisconsin adidas Invitational and the Boston College Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.

SOUTH REGION – Bob Braman, Florida State

(Dave Walker Award)
Braman, in his 16th year in charge of the men’s program at Florida State, guided FSU to its first South Regional Championships team title since 2012. His squad took down defending region champ Ole Miss with a 58-62 victory. FSU was seventh in the deep ACC and 18th at the year’s deepest meet at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION – Chris Bucknam, Arkansas

Bucknam, now in his eighth season guiding the Arkansas men, defied preseason expectations and has built his young Razorbacks into the No. 8 squad in the country. His Arkansas group scored a win at the South Central Regional just two weekends after crushing the field at the SEC Championships by 73 points.

SOUTHEAST REGION – Dale Cowper, Louisville

Cowper, in his third season at the reins of the Louisville program, guided his Cardinal men from outside the National Coaches’ Poll to Southeast Region champs this past weekend. Louisville defeated five top-30 teams en route to its first-ever region title to secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships for its first appearance since 2010.

WEST REGION – Greg Metcalf, Washington

Running on their home course in Seattle, Metcalf’s Washington men won their first-ever West Region title in what was one of the deepest regions in the country. Metcalf, in his 14th year leading the program, guided the No. 11 Huskies to victories over national top-10 teams in Stanford and Oregon just two weekends after an impressive fourth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships.

WOMEN’S COACHES OF THE YEAR

GREAT LAKES REGION – Mike McGuire, Michigan

McGuire, in his 24th year leading the Michigan women’s program, guided the No. 3 Wolverines to a nearly undefeated season. They won the Great Lakes Regional Championships title, along with victories at the Pre-National Invitational, the Greater Louisville Classic and the Commodore Classic. Only a runner-up upset defeat to Penn State at the Big Ten Championships stood between UofM and a perfect regular season.

MID-ATLANTIC REGION – John Gondak, Penn State

Gondak, in his second season at the helm at Penn State, has already put his stamp on the program with an upset victory over Michigan for the team’s first Big Ten title since 2009 and just the second in program history. His No. 9 Nittany Lions followed that performance up two weekends later with a victory in the Mid-Atlantic Regional over Georgetown.

MIDWEST REGION – Dave Smith, Oklahoma State

For the first time since 2005, Oklahoma State’s women claimed the Midwest Regional title, led by seventh-year head coach Dave Smith. “Firsts” was a continuing trend in the Cowgirls’ postseason, as two weeks prior OSU had won its first-ever Big 12 title and its first league title since the 1986 season.  His Cowgirls have finished first in every meet they’ve run this season.

MOUNTAIN REGION – Joe Franklin, New Mexico

Franklin, in his ninth season at the helm of the New Mexico program, has guided his No. 1 Lobos to their best season in history. The top-ranked team for much of the year, the Lobos scored dominant victories at the Notre Dame Invitational, the Wisconsin adidas Invitational and the Mountain West Championships.

NORTHEAST REGION – Ray Treacy, Providence

Treacy, in his 32nd year leading the Providence women, guided the No. 4 Friars to the Northeast Regional Championships title as part of a strong 2015 campaign. Led by individual champion Sarah Collins, his Friars scored a decisive win at the Big EAST Championships and also earned another victory at the Boston College Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.

SOUTH REGION – Steve Keith, Vanderbilt

After having never won the South Region prior to 2014, Keith’s No. 19 Vanderbilt squad can now call themselves two-time reigning champions. Keith, in his 10th season leading the Commodore program, guided his women to 13-point victory over Mississippi State as part of a season that also included a third-place finish in the SEC and a fourth-place finish at Notre Dame.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION – Lance Harter, Arkansas

Harter, in his 26th season guiding the Arkansas women’s program, has his No. 3 Razorbacks poised for another run at the NCAA Championships podium. Led by individual national title contender Dominique Scott, his Razorbacks were the South Central Region and SEC Champions by convincing margins, as well as the runners-up to No. 1 New Mexico at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.

SOUTHEAST REGION – Todd Morgan, Virginia

Morgan, in his fourth year in charge of the Virginia women’s program, has guided his No. 7 Cavaliers to top honors from among the nation’s toughest regions and conferences. Virginia won the Southeast Region title over another top-10 team in NC State, just two weeks after having topped the Wolfpack at the ACC Championships. Morgan’s Cavaliers were third at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.

WEST REGION – Corey Ihmels, Boise State

In the span of just three seasons, Ihmels has taken Boise State from a program that had never qualified to the NCAA Championships as a team to a squad now making its second-consecutive trip to nationals as the No. 8 team in the country. Led by individual national title-contending frosh Allie Ostrander, his Broncos made a statement early with a win at the Roy Griak Invitational and have since followed with runner-up finishes in both the Mountain West and the West Region.

Usain Bolt, Ashton Eaton and Christian Taylor are the three men’s finalists for the 2015 IAAF World Athlete of the Year award.
Bolt successfully defended his 100m, 200m and 4x100m titles at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015. The Jamaican sprinter clocked a world-leading time of 19.55 when winning the 200m.
Eaton won his second successive gold medal at the World Championships, setting a decathlon world record of 9045. Within his series, the US athlete set a world decathlon best of 45.00 for 400m.
Taylor won the triple jump title in Beijing with a North American record of 18.21m, the second-best jump in history. The US jumper also won the Diamond Race title in his event.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For the 22nd consecutive year, Stanford sends both its men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which take place Saturday  at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. It is the longest ongoing streak in the country.
Stanford, which has combined for nine team championships (five women, four men),  has intriguing possibilities. The men were runners-up last year and enter ranked No. 3. The women are led by two-time Pac-12 champion Aisling Cuffe, who was fourth at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

Stanford Men's Overview:

Stanford was the NCAA runner-up last year (98 points) and enters the NCAA Championships ranked No. 3. The Cardinal returns five members of its 2014 lineup -- Sean McGorty (20th), Joe Rosa (33rd), Sam Wharton (39th), Garrett Sweatt (68th), and Jack Keelan (100th). The Cardinal lost Maksim Korolev (fourth) and Michael Atchoo (29th), who were in their fifth seasons, but return Jim Rosa, who placed fifth at the 2013 NCAA’s before missing 2014 with an injury. The Cardinal also benefits from having freshman Grant Fisher, a two-time Foot Locker national high school champion, who will be racing for Stanford for the second time this season. This will be his first race at the 10K distance.
The Cardinal has eight NCAA top-two team finishes in its history, but this year’s squad remains something of an enigma. Because of injuries and, in the case of Fisher, who has been brought along slowly, this is the first time Stanford is running with its full ‘A’ team (Keelan did not race at Pac-12's or regionals). Therefore, an accurate prediction of the Cardinal’s chances seems out of the question. Plus, Stanford’s men have been wildly unpredictable at NCAA's in recent years, performing much lower than their ranking or much higher, as was the case last year when Stanford entered at No. 9. Stanford has fluctuated in this year’s USTFCCCA rankings from No. 2 in the pre-season poll to No. 23 (Oct. 20) to its current No. 3.
Stanford has four cross-country All-Americans among its top seven (McGorty, the Rosas, and Wharton), five have run the 5,000 in sub-14 (Keelan, McGorty, Sweatt, and the Rosas), and two are sub-4 milers (Fisher, McGorty). The Cardinal was second at both the Pac-12’s (to Colorado, 46-57) and NCAA West Regional (to Washington, 63-83).

Stanford Men Keys to Success
Success is relative. Coach Chris Miltenberg, Stanford's Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field, might define success as a top-10 finish based on the adversity that Stanford has battled through and considering valuable training time missed. However, there seems little doubt that if its top five are at their best that Stanford could be formidable. The unknown is whether the Cardinal can be at that level considering that some runners have been working themselves back in shape after injuries.

The Rosa factor.Jim and Joe Rosa are both capable of top-five finishes if fully healthy and trained. Since that hasn’t been the case, they’ve had to progress with limited racing. They are improving each week,  with Jim sixth and Joe eighth at regionals. They are the biggest X-factors in Stanford’s arsenal.

The high school phenom. Can a team have three X-factors? Actually, if you include Jack Keelan, who missed the Pac-12 and West Region meets, one could say Stanford has four unknowns. But, back to the freshman ... Grant Fisher arrived with impeccable credentials: Among two in high school history to win two Foot Locker national cross-country championships and run a sub-4 mile. Given that Fisher is stepping up his weekly mileage significantly and the NCAA’s 10K race distance is twice what he did in high school, Miltenberg has brought Fisher along slowly. He raced unattached at the Stanford Invitational, finishing second to teammate Sean McGorty and then made his Stanford debut at the Pac-12 Championships, finishing 11th overall and No. 3 on his team over 8K. This will be his first race at the 10K distance.

The team, the team, the team. Perhaps the most valuable member of last year’s team was fifth-year senior Michael Atchoo, a miler who paced Stanford’s second pack up the field throughout the race, to secure the runner-up finish. Stanford’s doesn’t have anyone in such a defined role this year. The Rosas, McGorty, and Garrett Sweatt have been running in the lead pack as long as possible. However, running as a team and knowing where their teammates are will be vital.

Stepping up to the moment. Last year, Stanford had the benefit of not having to live up to anyone’s expectations. This year, there will be more eyes on the Cardinal, including some who wonder whether it can end the Colorado dynasty. This year, Stanford must deal with, or ignore, added pressure.

Stanford Women's Overview:
In an ideal world, Aisling Cuffe and Elise Cranny would have raced together at Stanford, Cuffe as a fifth-year senior and Cranny as a sophomore. Last year, Cranny was the top freshman at the NCAA Championships, finishing 12th -- the highest by a Stanford frosh since Lauren Fleshman (fifth) and Erin Sullivan (seventh) in 1999 -- while Cuffe missed the season with an injury. This year, Cranny is out with an injury while Cuffe won her second Pac-12 title. Cuffe sat out the NCAA West Regional as an injury precaution and Stanford finished fourth -- advancing as an at-large.
In Cuffe’s two serious races, the Cardinal was third at both the Washington Invitational and Pac-12 Championships. Stanford has history on its side, the Cardinal has won five NCAA titles and has 10 top-two team finishes in its history. This is Stanford’s 23rd consecutive NCAA appearance -- the longest women’s streak in the country by far. Michigan State is next at 16.
Cuffe, the fourth-place NCAA finisher in 2013, is the only cross-country All-America among Stanford’s lineup. Vanessa Fraser, who has run 15:54.12 in the 5,000, has often been the Cardinal No. 1 in Cuffe’s absence.
Last year, Stanford placed 14th with five freshmen in eligibility and returned all seven from that team. This year’s lineup will include three of those: Fraser and Sophie Chase, plus Molly McNamara as an alternate . However, Stanford has been boosted by the emergence of a sophomore who was not part of that group. Julia Maxwell was the team’s No. 2 at regionals and No. 3 at conference -- her best individual team finishes. Also, freshman Hannah Long has been a solid part of the top five all season.

Stanford Women Keys to Success
Consistency. The Stanford women have been more consistent at nationals than the men -- with finishes of 10th, third, 11th, and 14th the past four seasons -- and the program will count on that consistency once again. Stanford has finished 16th or better every year since 1993, a streak of 22 years.
Could be a contender.Aisling Cuffe is undefeated in her two competitive races this season, winning the Washington Invitational and the Pac-12 title. Her background is so strong that she must be regarded as a contender despite the fact that she has raced seriously only twice in the past 17 months. Coach Chris Miltenberg said the key to her Pac-12 victory was having confidence in her ability, even if she didn’t share the training base of some of her competitors. Cuffe was fourth at the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships and runner-up in the NCAA indoor and outdoor 5,000 in 2014 before missing all of the 2014-15 cross country and track seasons with a back injury. She has run 15:11.13 in the 5,000, making her the third-fastest collegian in history.
Team running. Stanford’s spread from Nos. 1-7 at the NCAA West Regional was only 21.6 seconds, by far the tightest group in the race. Nos. 1-5 were only 17.6 seconds apart. If Stanford can get a similar spread from Nos. 3-7, the Cardinal may be in business for the podium. However, Cuffe and Vanessa Fraser should be ahead of that group for Stanford to maximize its point potential.
The half-miler.Claudia Saunders got a late start to cross country after a long track season that ended at the Areva Diamond League meet outside Paris on July 4. Saunders is a two-time NCAA outdoor runner-up in the 800 and holds the school record of 2:00.63. She joined the Stanford lineup at Pac-12s and was the team’s No. 5 there and at the West Regional. If she can bring another strong performance, it would be a welcome bonus. She is quite familiar with competing on big stages.

Pac-12 All-Century Team
In this, the 100th year of the conference now known as the Pac-12, a series of All-Century teams have been selected to honor the greats in conference history. Stanford dominated the women’s All-Century team: Sara Bei‘05, Alicia Craig‘05, Lauren Fleshman‘03, Regina Jacobs‘86, and Arianna Lambie‘07. The men had one selection among the 12 runners selected: Ryan Hall‘05.
