RESULTSANNAPOLIS, Md. (1/9/16) - The Princeton’s men’s indoor track & field team began the year 2016 out strong as the Tigers defeated Navy 95.5-85.5 in the annual dual meet, this year held at Wesley A. Brown Field House.
Princeton won nine of the 17 events, including four of the six field events: the weight throw, shot put, long jump and triple jump; as well as the 60, 800, 1000, 3000 and 4x800 relay.
Freshman Adam Kelly won the weight throw with a toss of 19.63m (64-5) on his final attempt, four feet further than the rest of the competition. Junior Vic Youn earned a point in the event in well as he was fourth with a throw of 16.95 (55-7.50).
The Tigers went 1-2 in the shot put with the duo of junior Christopher Cook and sophomore Mitchel Charles (Rancho Palos Verdes. Cook launched to 17.03 (55-10.50) while Charles saw 16.59 (54-5.25) on his first attempt, which would be his best of the day.
Another 1-2 effort came in the long jump. Senior Jake Scinto was over 6.5 meters on every jump and reached 6.96 (22-10) on his third that would be his best of the afternoon. Junior Greg Leeper leapt to 6.57 (21-6.75) on his only jump but it was good enough for second place.
The success in the jumps continued with freshman Stefan Amokwandoh and sophomore Lane Russell in the triple. Amokwandoh was the only jumper to clear 46 feet and posted a 14.27 (46-10). Russell’s 13.75 (45-1.50) on his second attempt made him the runner-up in the event.
Sophomore Colin Reilly and junior Xavier Bledsoe earned four points towards the team total in the high jump. Reilly cleared 1.94 (6-4.25) on his first attempt, while Bledsoe cleared the height on his second effort.
Sophomore August Kiles and junior Ben Gaylord picked up three points in pole vault, with Kiles cleared 5.00 (16-4.75) and Gaylord 4.80 (15-9), for third and fourth place, respectively.
On the track, freshman Charles Volker won the 60 at 6.82, while sophomore Carrington Akosa was third at 7.00. Akosa followed up with a second-place finish in the 200 at 22.05, while teammate Brent Albertson was third at 22.31.
Sophomore Josh Ingalls won the 800 at 1:51.82, two seconds in front of the competition.
Princeton went 1-2-3 in the 1000 led by sophomore Noah Kauppila’s 2:25.67.  Sophomore Zach Albright followed at 2:29.11 and junior Stephen Rossettie at 2:30.66. The Tigers kept it up in the distance events, as senior Michael Sublette won the 3,000 at 8:28.80 and sophomore Rob Stone was third at 8:35.93
Senior Luke Brahm and freshman Jeremy Spiezio seized five points the mile clocking 4:09.26 and 4:11.31, respectively. And freshman Frank Aririguzoh and freshman Christian Fryer-Davis did the same in a highly-contested 500. In a super tight finish, Aririguzoh clocked 1:06.52, while Fryer-Davis had a 1:06.87.
Two other runner-ups were senior Greg Caldwell in the 60 hurdles at 8.34, and sophomore Josh Freeman in the 400 at 48.53
The teams split the relays with Princeton winning the 4x800 with Kauppila, senior Sam Berger, sophomore Eric Schulz, and Ingalls posting a 7:48.15. It was 18 seconds better than Navy’s time. In the 4x400 Princeton’s Akosa, junior Jabari Johnson, Freeman and junior Ray Mennin were second at 3:25.43.
Princeton will take two weeks off for first semester exams and break and will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23 when it hosts the Tiger Open at Jadwin Gym. The meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m.

Garrett Heath’s first win at the Great Edinburgh X Country two years ago came as something of a shock. He surprised his opponents again one year later when he successfully defended his title, yet few would have put money on him beating double world champion Mo Farah and winning for a third time on Saturday (9).
But that is exactly what the US distance runner did at Holyrood Park, handing Farah his first cross-country defeat since 2010 in what was the double Olympic champion’s first race of 2016.
In the last race of the day, and after a heavy shower of rain half an hour earlier, the course for the men’s 8km event around Arthur’s Seat was choppy and muddy. Understandably, the race got off to a cautious start with a large group covering the first lap in 6:19.
Farah was buried deep within the pack, while Heath was near the front, just a stride to two behind early leader Callum Hawkins of Great Britain.
At the start of the second lap, Farah started to move through the pack and briefly held the lead at the end of that circuit. It was short-lived, however, as Heath, Hawkins and Ross Millington continued to share the lead throughout the third lap.
Hawkins went through the three-lap mark in 16:05 but it was still wide open as just five seconds separated the top 13 athletes. Heath and Farah were still close behind Hawkins on the fourth lap, but with the clock reading 19:30, Farah hit the front once more.
His move was not decisive, though. Farah went through the bell in 20:54 with Heath and Millington close behind and Hawkins and USA’s Scott Faubl another second adrift. Those five athletes had broken away from the rest of the field but it was still impossible to call.
They each had their moments at the front on the last lap, but Heath was the only one who was able to pull clear. He opened up a few metres on Farah leading into the final uphill section. By the time they had negotiated the muddy hill, Heath’s lead had doubled. With the finish line in sight, both Heath and Farah unleashed their finishing kicks, but the Briton was unable to make a dent on Heath’s lead.
Heath crossed the line in 25:29, two seconds ahead of Farah. Faubl was third in 25:38, while Hawkins and Millington rounded out the top five.
“I didn’t expect to win again,” said Heath. “Mo is such a great runner, I wanted to be up there running with him. I saw my team-mate come up next to me with 800 metres to go and I got excited. I kept waiting for Mo to kick past me in the home stretch, because I could hear people shouting.
Farah, who will soon head off for a training stint in Ethiopia, was gracious in defeat. “It’s early in the season,” he said. “I never want to lose a race, but it’s better to lose now than later in the year. Garrett Heath is a great athlete.”

Victory at last for Avery

While Britain’s top distance runner missed out on victory in the men’s race, the host nation had cause for celebration in the women’s 4km event.
Two-time European cross-country silver medallist Kate Avery led from the early stages. The rain started to fall heavily soon after the start of the race, but that didn’t deter Avery, whose lead continued to grow with each lap.
Double European cross-country champion Fionnuala McCormack was the only athlete able to stay near Avery during the second half, but she was always a comfortable distance behind.
McCormack, as ever, was strong in the final stages, but was only able to make up one second on Avery. The Briton crossed the line in 21:05, four seconds ahead of her Irish rival, who was representing Europe in the team contest.
Gemma Steel, the 2014 European cross-country champion, was a distant third in 21:31 with Romania’s Ancuta Bobocel taking fourth in 21:38.
“I always seem to be in the medals and never quite on top,” said Avery. “I’m over the moon with that win.”
In the team contest, Britain won with 125 points with Europe finishing second (197) and USA in third (232).
In the mixed 4x1km relay event – separate from the team competition – a Scottish team anchored by Laura Muir won by nine seconds from Great Britain.

EDINBURGH, Scotland -- On the winding course in Holyrood Park, Team USA’s Garrett Heath proved his title of the king of cross country was worth it, taking down Great Britain’s Mo Farah in the senior men’s 8 km at the Great Edinburgh XCountry International Challenge on Saturday.

Team USA (232 points) finished the day in third in the team competition behind Team Great Britain with 125 points and Team Europe with 197 points. Fans can catch all the action with the webcast replay available on USATF.TV.

Heath, the two-time defending 4 km champion in Edinburgh, and compatriot Scott Fauble stuck with the front of the pack early on, with the duo pushing the pace along with the whole of Team GB. With the final lap ahead, Farah made his move to the front of the pack and Heath and Fauble went with the Olympic gold medalist. Fauble took the lead with 800 meters to go but surged too soon, as Heath stayed on his shoulder and passed both Fauble and Farah.

Heath was impressive over the final meters and found another gear to take the win in 25:29. Farah was behind Heath in 25:31 and Fauble was impressive in his international debut to take third in 25:38.

The top American woman in the senior women’s 6 km was 2015 USATF National Cross Country Champion Amy Val Alstine who crossed sixth overall in 21:41. In the junior men’s 4 km race, Phillip Rocha was the fastest American in fifth, finishing in 19:41, while fellow junior Katie Rainsberger was the top American in the junior women’s race, crossing in 14:29 for fifth. The junior women’s race had to be shortened due to weather conditions.

Proud of my kid racing for the USA today in Scotland! Congrats to Garrett Heath on his win for the USA men!
Kaitlin Gregg Goodman added 6 new photos— with Garrett Heath and Cally Macumber.
Lots of mud = one tough race. Not quite what I was hoping for, but proud to be 5th American for ‪#‎teamUSA‬ at ‪#‎GEXC2016‬ today. And even more proud to wear the red white and blue for the first (but definitely not the last!) time! 🇺🇸

IAAF response to Ethics Board decision concerning four former officials

PRESS RELEASE

IAAF response to Ethics Board decision concerning four former officials

main image alt
© IAAF
A panel of the IAAF Ethics Board (formerly Commission) has today delivered its decision concerning four persons, namely: Papa Massata Diack, former marketing consultant to the IAAF, Valentin Balakhnichev, former President of the All-Russia Athletic Federation (ARAF), Alexei Melnikov, former Chief ARAF Coach for long distance walkers and runners, and Gabriel Dollé, former Director of the IAAF’s Anti-Doping Department, for various breaches of the IAAF Code of Ethics.
This investigation commenced in April 2014 upon referral of a complaint to the Ethics Board by a member of the IAAF staff.
The IAAF is angered to see that individuals have in the panel’s finding “conspired to extort what were in substance bribes from the athlete by acts of blackmail.” This is all the more so because these breaches are related to one doping case which, among others, was identified and pursued by the IAAF Anti-Doping Department. Ultimately, the Department was able to ensure that the athlete concerned received a lengthy ban, but the four individuals' activities delayed that outcome. The IAAF has already introduced corrective measures to make sure this sort of interference can’t happen again.
These four individuals who have been found guilty and sanctioned are no longer associated with the IAAF in any capacity. The IAAF is reassured that the panel of the Ethics Board has seen no evidence implicating any other members of the IAAF Anti-Doping Department who continue their ground-breaking work on the Athlete Biological Passport programme with WADA.
IAAF President Sebastian Coe commented: “I’d like to thank the independent IAAF Ethics Board for their diligent and detailed investigation. The life bans announced today could not send a stronger message that those who attempt to corrupt or subvert the sport of athletics will be brought to justice. We continue to work with the French authorities’ investigation and the WADA’s Independent Commission.”

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.
- The Penn State track & field program opened the 2016 indoor season with several strong performances Saturday at the Penn State Relays including three school records and two meet record en route to 17 event titles at the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
"It was an outstanding day overall," said head track and field coach John Gondak.
"I thought the stands were packed and it stayed that way the entire day. It was an electric atmosphere here at the Ashenfelter III track. I told the kids all week long that we needed to come in here and compete, simply compete, and I saw that today all across the board, we won 17 events which was outstanding for our program with both newcomers and veterans contributing equally. In my ten years being here this was probably the best Penn State Relays I've experienced."
Penn State would start the day off with a win in the first event of the day as Rachel Fatherly's throw of 64'8" (19.71m) led the entire field by almost three feet. Alyssa Robinson would finish behind Fatherly in second with a best mark of 61'9.5" (18.83m). Fatherly would once again take to the circle, this time for the shot put. The senior from Williamsport, Pa. would win her second event of the day with a throw of 53'5.5" (16.29m). Teammates Obeng Marfo and Alyssa Robinson would finish third and seventh with marks of 49'5" (15.06m) and 45'7.75" (13.91m), respectively.
The men's weight throw would see Morgan Shigo and Kory Decesaris both finish inside the top-five. Shigo took second-place with a throw of 64'5" (19.63m), while Decesaris claimed fourth with a mark of 58'9.5" (17.92m). Shigo would return for the shot recording a seventh-place finish (50'9.5"/15.48m) behind teammate and event winner Jon Yohman's mark of 55'1.5" (16.80m).
Kobren Frederick and Kaitlyn Lopez would advance to the finals of the men's and women's triple jump, respectively. Frederick would finish with third (45'5.75"/13.86m), while Lopez took second with a best jump of 37'10.75" (11.55m).
Lopez and Frederick would return to the runways again, this time to compete in the long jump.
Frederick would finish eighth behind teammates Cody Minnig in fourth-place (22'5.75"/6.85m) and Malik Moffett who took second-place in the competition with a best jump of 22'8.5" on the day. Lopez would finish fifth in the women's long jump leaping out to a mark of 17'9" (5.41m), but it was Penn State's Madeline Holmburg who stole the show. The freshman from Greensburg, Pa. took the individual honors by winning the long jump with a best jump of 19'2.5" (5.85m).
The men's and women's pole vault would provide some of the most exciting action on the day as two meet records and a school record would be set.
Army's Lee Bares would reset the men's meet record previously held by Cornell's Evan Whitehall at 16'4.75" (4.99m) after successfully clearing 16'10.75" (5.15m) to place his name in the Penn State Relay record books.
In the women's pole vault, Penn State would finish 1-2-3-4 as Lexi Masterson would finish on top with a new meet and school record.
Masterson passed on the first four bars opting to enter the competition at 12'6.25" (3.82m), the junior from Jeannette, Pa. would clear four-straight bars with the final bar coming at a Penn State Relays and Penn State Indoor track and field record height of 13'6.25" (4.12m), erasing the old record of 13'5.5" (4.11m) set by Sarah Dougherty in 2004. Hannah Mulhern would take second with a huge PR of 13'4.25" (4.07m), besting her previous career best of 12-3.25 (3.74) by over a foot. Kasey Kemp and Megan Fry would each clear 12'6.25" (3.82m) to finish third and fourth, respectively.
The high jump events would see two Penn State underclassmen take home bragging rights as Sophomore Megan McCloskey took the title for the women clearing 5'8" (1.73), while true-freshman Chisom Ifedi took the title on the men's side clearing a personal best 7'1.5" (2.17m). Ifedi's personal best heading into the weekend was 6'10" during his prep career. Robert Cardina also delivered a great performance in his first meet of the year following an injury plagued 2015 with a clearance of 6'9" (2.10m).Freshmen Devin Bradham and Malik Moffett also competed in the high jump finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
Madeline Holmberg notched another win for the Nittany Lions on the women's side in long jump while Moffett finished as the top male triple jumper for Penn State finishing second (22'8.5"/6.92m).
The 60-meter hurdles showcased sophomore Quenee Dale in a near meet record performance clocking 8.33 just a mere six one-hundredths of a second off the meet record set by Penn State's Evonne Britton in 2014. Madeline Holmburg would finish third in the finals of the 60m hurdles alongside Dale.
Keianna Albury, a freshman from Nassau, Bahamas stepped up her first time wearing the blue & white running a meet best time of 7.58 seconds for the win. Xavier Smith would replicate the win on the men's side in record fashion breaking the old school record of 6.76 held by Ernie Terrell set in 2003 by laying down a 6.70 on the Horace Ashenfelter III track. Smith's 6.70 also breaks the meet record held by Dennison Long of 6.74 set in 2014.
The 4x800m relay of Julie Kocjancic, Victoria Crawford, Elizabeth Chikotas, and Tori Gerlach ran their way into the Penn State Relay record book with their performance of 8:45.85, falling .25 seconds short of breaking the Penn State indoor record.
Other Penn State wins on the day include, the men's 4x800m relay (7:25.28), Tichina Rhodes in the women's 200m (24.67), Alex Shisler in the men's 200m (21.47), Both the men's and women's Distance Medley Relays, and the men's 4x400m relay.
Penn State will host the 2016 Nittany Lion Challenge Jan. 16th at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

PROVO, Utah – BYU track and field started off the 2016 indoor season by winning 15 total events at the BYU Cougar Collegiate Indoor Invitational.
“I think it was a nice day with nice performances for the weekend,” BYU coach Ed Eyestone said. “Kevin Nielsen (Granite Bay HS, CA)

really jumpstarted things in the heptathlon on Thursday and Friday. He had the No. 3 performance all-time in the heptathlon in BYU indoor history. I think that puts him at No. 3 in the country right now. It probably won’t hold up because heptathlon is one of the events that are held a lot at other meets. He’ll probably have to improve on that but it’s a close mark to get him into the national meet.”
As part of his personal record heptathlon effort, Nielsen also had the No. 10 all-time mark in the long jump in BYU indoor history.
Tatenda Tsumba, John Glazier, Zachary Blackham, Connor Ross, Sean Adams(Valley Center HS, Ca) and Zachary Stetler all set PRs in their respective events this weekend. Eyestone was very pleased with each of their performances.
“Tatenda had a very nice mark in the 300m,” he said. “He’s showing some good range as a short sprinter who is getting out of his comfort zone and running a really fast time in the 300m. His strength is progressing nicely, and he might get an opportunity to run in the 400m if he can run a 300m that fast.
“Glazier hit the No. 4 all-time mark in BYU indoor history in the long jump, so that was really nice for a guy just off his mission this past summer. His speed is coming along really well.
“Blackham had the No. 9 all-time mark in BYU indoor history for the high jump at 7’1”. It was a great performance for him.
“It wasn’t a surprising mark, but true freshman (Connor) Ross (McQueen, Reno, NV) ran 1:51.43 (in the 800m). It was the first time in uniform and it was a nice opener for him,” Eyestone said.
Eyestone also had high praise for Adams, one of his senior leaders who had a PR in the 500m.
“Sean (Adams) is tough as nails and we always get good performances out of him. He doesn’t have an outdoor season to go to, so it’s all indoor season for him. He’s going to be a great asset and strength. He’s going to be a crucial member of our 4x400m team.”
Stetler’s PR came in the discus with a throw of 167’1.5”.
The women had a strong performance in the meet-- placing first in eight events.
“On the women’s side, Alyssa Monteverde-Dalton had the No. 5 all-time 60-meter hurdles mark in BYU indoor history at 8.42. She came back just an hour later and won the 60 meters, so that was a nice day for her,” said Eyestone.
Monteverde-Dalton also holds a new personal record of 7.76 in the 60 meters.
Along with the win from Monteverde-Dalton, Erin Merkley (pentathlon), Lauren Shubin (one mile), Shea Collinsworth (500 meters), ShyAndrea Jackson, (triple jump), Anginae Monteverde (pole vault), and Marissa Appiah (high jump) were among the other first-place finishers.
“Shea Collinsworth just missed the school record in the 500 meters by 0.2 seconds. She really got out and ran strong and was on her own,” said Eyestone. “The 500 meters isn’t an event that is run really frequently, so for her to run that time sets her up well for the 800 meters that she is going to be running in the future.”
Marissa Appiah and Andrea Stapleton both scored the same in the high jump with marks of 5’8”. This mark is a new personal best for Appiah.

Up next the track and field team will travel to College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Team Invitational as well as Pocatello, Idaho, for the Snake River Open on Jan. 15-16.
