USATF Future Stars Meets relaunches for 2016 with expanded offerings, simplified program

1/11/2016

INDIANAPOLIS -- USA Track & Field on Monday announced the opening of applications for USATF Future Stars Meets, a community-based track program designed to provide significant support to mid-level, competitive track meets around the country and to foster participation by children nationwide.

Launched in 2015, this year’s USATF Future Stars Meets program includes several changes to streamline and simplify the process for meet organizers. The program will support meets around the country by providing financial assistance, insurance, sanctioning, equipment, branding, ribbons and an optional meet manual to each meet designated as a Future Stars Meet — all at no cost to meet organizers.

In 2016, any organizer hosting a community-based meet may apply for Future Stars Meets status and financial assistance. Criteria for funding include a history of meets held or previously operated by event organizers, the number of projected participants, cost of hosting the meets, and financial need of the area. Meets should be comprised primarily of children who are interested in track and field but not yet fully immersed in it; most participants should not already by USATF members.

“USATF developed the Future Stars Meets program to continue the robust participation of community organizations in the sport that had been fostered previously by Hershey’s Track & Field Games,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said. “Our first year of Future Stars Meets gave us a great foundation for expanding the program. We want to ensure these meets can flourish in their communities and continue to introduce children to competitive track and field and to USATF.”

Meets that receive Future Stars status are free and open to the public, and athletes do not need to be USATF members to participate. New in 2016:
  • There is only one tier of designated, USATF Future Stars Meets, and all will receive funding in addition to other benefits.
  • Meet organizers may contest track and field events that they choose, or they may utilize the optional, USATF Future Stars Meets handbook, which provides a turnkey manual for operating a meet.
  • Children who participate in Future Stars Meets also are eligible for one of 800 free USATF Memberships, awarded by USATF through its local Associations where Future Stars Meets are held.

Meet Benefits

Beginning today through January 29, 2016, meet organizers from around the country seeking to receive funding as Future Stars Elite Meets can visit the USATF website to apply for funding and support. Meets from all 50 states and the District of Columbia are eligible.

Benefits for Future Stars Elite Meets include, at no cost:
  • Funding assistance from $1,000 to $3,500 per meet
  • USATF sanctioning and event-liability insurance
  • Future Stars Meet handbook (optional)
  • Ribbons for the top six finishers in up to 18 events at each meet
  • Branding templates for awards, signage, and similar collateral
  • Direct contact with USATF Associations and Youth Programs for assistance with the meets

Key dates for Future Stars Meets are as follows:
January 11 – USATF Future Stars Meets funding applications open
January 29– USATF Funding application deadline – applications close
February 19– USATF Future Stars Elite Meets funding recipients notified
February 23– USATF Future Stars Elite Meets funding recipients announced
All year– USATF Future Stars Meets held throughout the country, introducing kids to competitive track & field

To receive funding, meets need only host two RunJumpThrow events — USATF’s youth activity program developed with The Hershey Company — and submit an after-action report.

Australia selects first five athletes for Rio

The Australian Olympic Committee has made their first selections for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Athletics Australia confirmed on Friday (8).
After winning national titles last month, Eloise Wellings and David McNeill will compete in the 10,000m in Rio.
Race walkers Jared Tallent, Chris Erickson and Brendon Reading have been selected for the men’s 50km race walk, having fulfilled the selection criteria. Tallent took silver in the event at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015, while Erickson gained automatic nomination after winning the Australian 50km Race Walking Championships in Melbourne last month.
“The early nomination and subsequent selection by the AOC of these five athletes is an exciting and critical step in ensuring each athlete can now focus on their preparations for Rio,” said Athletics Australia head coach Craig Hilliard.
“The respective 10,000m and 50km selections capped stellar seasons for both Wellings and Tallent. Importantly two Olympic debutantes in McNeill and Reading produced excellent trial performances, vindicating their nominations, while Erickson and Tallent have each secured their third Olympic team selection. All athletes and their coaches are to be congratulated.”
The next nominations by Athletics Australia for selection to the Olympic team will take place in tranches. Nominations will follow the 20km race walk trials in February, followed by the track and field selection trials in April. Marathon nominations will take place in May, with final track and field athlete nominations in July completing the nomination and selection process.

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.— In the first meet of the 2016 calendar year, members of the University of Colorado track and field team looked sharp, collecting numerous top five finishes on Friday at the U.S. Air Force Academy Open.
Senior Brady Rutt and sophomore Mariah Walker led the Buffs with a pair of runner-up finishes in the throws. Rutt recorded a throw of 57-8.25 in the weight throw, which was just barely second to Colorado State’s Tyler Schultz’s mark of 59-3. Walker placed second in the shot put, launching a personal best mark of 48-11.75. The toss also put Walker third on CU’s all-time performers list.
The jumps were another area where the Buffs saw success. Senior Abrianna Torres was third in the long jump and sophomore Michaela Wenning placed fifth. Torres finished the day with a jump of 18-11.25, while Wenning jumped 17-8.25, a personal best.
Freshman Duane McClurkin Jr. was third overall in the men’s high jump, clearing 6-8.75, just two inches shy of the first place jumper, AFA’s Taylor Smith (6-11.75). The women’s team had two Buffs in the top five of the high jump. Sophomore Rajon O’Quinn and senior Kelsey English each finished with a 5-7 mark, but O’Quinn took fourth, while English came away with a fifth place finish after the tiebreaker.
Colorado’s runners were also busy on the track. McClurkin Jr. ran his first 200 for the Buffs and placed third overall in 21.94 in front of sophomore Austin Mitsch (Sacramento, Ca) (21.96), who placed fourth. In the 400, freshman Trenton Stringari recorded a fifth place finish in 51.11. The women were led in the sprints by sophomore Alexandria Peters, who took fourth in the 200 in 25.09.
Freshman Alexander Billing was the highest finishing Buff in the hurdles, clocking a fourth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.29). On the women’s side, Torres just missed the top five with a sixth place finish in 9.05.
The CU men’s mile relay team took home top honors in the final event of the meet, finishing in 3:20.81. The women’s mile relay was fourth overall, clocking in at 3:54.33.
The Buffs will be in action next Friday and Saturday, January 15-16, at the Pott Indoor Invitational at Balch Fieldhouse.

Jan. 11, 2016
// AT THE STARTING LINE
The University of Cincinnati track and field program opens its 2016 indoor campaign this weekend when it travels to the UK Invitational in Lexington, Ky., January 15-16. The event will take place inside Nutter Field House on the Kentucky campus and will be the first of two consecutive weeks that UC competes at UK.
// THE COMPETITION
This weekend’s meet will feature athletes from 23 schools in the non-team scored event. Several familiar faces will be among the list of participating schools, including conference foe UCF and regional foes Dayton, Louisville, Miami (Ohio) and Northern Kentucky. The women’s team from Kentucky is the lone squad in the meet that holds a ranking in the USTFCCCA National Top 25 (No. 8).
// THE EVENTS
This weekend’s meet features 15 of the 18 events contested at the NCAA Championships with the lone exceptions being the 5,000m run and the multi-events (pentathlon & heptathlon). Two events will be held on Friday with the weight throw opening the meet at 4pm while the distance medley relay is the first track event of the weekend at 7pm. On Saturday, the high jump competitions open the day at 9am while the semifinals of the 60m hurdles are the first events on the track at noon. Live results will be available at UKAthletics.com.
// LAST TIME: 2015 UK INVITATIONAL
The Bearcats are no strangers to the Nutter Field House having competed in several UK events each indoor season. Last year, 12 student-athletes posted Top 5 finishes in their respective events with Erika Hurd winning the women’s high jump for UC’s lone win in the meet. Five marks recorded ranked among the program’s all-time Top 10, including Je’Rica Sanders, who clocked in at 8.47 in the 60m hurdles for the second-fastest time in school history.
// RECORD SHOP
The 2015 indoor season saw eight school records fall on numerous occasions, including six on the women’s side. For the women, records were broken in the 300m dash, 400m dash, 4x400m relay, 1,000m run, triple jump and shot put while the men’s pole vault and shot put records also fell. Of the seven women that had a hand in the records, all but two return for the 2016 campaign while both men’s record setters are back.
// YES, SHE KEN(YA)
Kenya Woodall turned in an impressive indoor campaign in 2015 that saw her earn USTFCCCA All-American Honorable Mention in the 400m dash and a pair of all-conference honors from The American (400m dash & 4x400m relay). During that indoor season, Woodall took down a pair of school records, running 38.60 in the 300m dash and 53.73 in the 400m dash. She also was part of the record 4x400m relay (Javette Lee, Jalisa Jarrett and Jada Grant). In all, Woodall’s top time recorded in four individual events ranked among the program’s all-time Top 10 with her times in the 200m dash (24.67) and 600m run (1:35.08) ranking fourth and fifth, respectively, at UC.
// UP AND OVER
Adrian Valles’ first year of action for UC was extremely fruitful as the Spaniard not only secured USTFCCCA All-America First Team honors in the indoor and outdoor pole vault, he also took over the top spot in the Bearcats’ record book in the event. Indoors, Valles cleared 5.48m (17-11.25) to break Chris Smith’s 10-year reign at the top (5.41m/17-09.00 in 2005) before claiming gold at the conference meet. Overall, five of his marks rank among the Top 10 all-time in program history. It was a similar story outdoors as he cleared 5.65m (18-06.50) to set the school mark and record his all-time best clearance regardless of season.
// THEY’RE BIG SHOTS
The records in the men’s and women’s shot put fell in 2015 and both came with performances that put a UC student-athlete into uncharted territory. Macklin Tudor, who is back for 2016, not only became the school record holder in the event with his toss of 18.10m (59-04.75), he also became the first Bearcat to surpass the 18-meter mark and move past the 57’ mark. On the women’s side, Frida Akerstrom capped her UC career as the first Bearcat women to surpass the 16-meter mark as she hit exactly 16.00m (52-06.00) to win the conference crown.
// JUMPING IN
Rebecka Abrahamsson, who opened her collegiate career last year by winning her first three triple jump competitions, recorded five of the Top 6 marks in program history during the indoor season, including a school-record mark of 12.65m (41-06.00) during the conference meet. Overall, Abrahamsson posted the Top 2 marks in program history to surpass Shintara Carpenter’s 2005 mark of 12.55m (40-10.25). A USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honoree during the outdoor season, she is the only UC woman to post 41-foot marks in the event.
// RECAP: 2015 INTRASQUAD MEET
Team Red and Team Black split the team wins in the 36th intrasquad meet on December 4, but Team Black came out on top in the annual event by a score of 107-92 inside the Armory Fieldhouse on campus. The men’s portion of meet saw Red pull out a one-point victory (51-50) while the women captured the win with a 57-41 score. Seven total intrasquad records fell in the event. Jimmy Brooks (55m/6.1), Alex Bloom (high jump/2.09m/6-10.50), Erika Hurd (high jump/1.79m/5-10.50) and Annette Echikunwoke (weight throw/18.53m/60-09.75) broke records competing for Black while Josh Province (weight throw/18.53m/60-09.75) Kenya Woodall (200m/25.0) and Rebecka Abrahamsson (triple jump/12.23m/40-01.50) set new standards while competing for Red.
// RECAP: NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Two Bearcats competed in the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships with both garnering USTFCCCA All-America honors. One of only two freshmen to qualify for the national meet in the pole vault, Adrian Valles finished sixth nationally with a clearance of 5.45m (17-10.50), which equalled the highest finish at the national meet for a male student-athlete, tying David Payne (100m hurdles/2004). For the women, Erika Hurd took part in the high jump, where she finished in a tie for 15th place to earn All-America second team honors. Hurd’s highest clearance in the competition was 1.72m (5-08.00).
// WELCOME BACK: ALL-AMERICAN EDITION
Four Bearcats garnered USTFCCCA All-America honors based on their performances at the 2015 NCAA championship events, including Adrian Valles, would earned first-team honors in the indoor and outdoor pole vault competitions. On the women’s side, Erika Hurd was named to the second-team indoors and first team outdoors for her efforts in the high jump, Rebecka Abrahamsson earned second-team honors in the outdoor triple jump and Kenya Woodall earned honorable mention for the outdoor 400m dash.
// RECAP: THE AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Both teams placed fourth at the American Athletic Conference Championships last year with the women claiming a pair of individual championship crowns with the men adding one. For the women, Erika Hurd won the high jump and Frida Akerstrom won the shot put while Adrian Valles captured the men’s pole vault. Sixteen different women and 11 men scored team points in the meet with 12 and eight, respectively, returning in 2016. Individually, five women and five men each were named the all-conference teams with four each returning this season.
// CROSSING BORDERS
While both rosters carry an abundant number of products from the state of Ohio with 26 (of 43) men and 31 (of 48) women hailing from the Buckeye State, the Bearcats also boast a roster of eight international student-athletes set to compete in 2016. Both rosters house four internationals, including a pair of returning All-Americans in Rebecka Abrahamsson (Sweden) in the triple jump and Adrian Valles (Spain) in the pole vault. Joining Abrahamsson on the women’s roster are a pair of Canadians in Alanna Hendricks and Juliana Puopolo while Naomi Urbano (multi-events) hails from Mexico. Valles and fellow compatriot Sergio Acera (jumps) join distance runner Toby Loveridge (England) and sprinter Tevin-Llyod Thompson (Jamaica) on the men’s roster.
// HELLO, MY NAME IS:
With the start of a new season comes the addition of student-athletes to the roster. This year, the UC program will welcome a total of 22 freshmen, including 13 women and 9 men. The newest competitors are not the only rookies to the program this year as Lara Crofford was hired to join the coaching staff as an assistant for distance running and cross country. Crofford began her time with the program earlier this academic year with the cross country team.
// MORE ADDITIONS
In November, Director of Track & Field Susan Seaton announced a 10-person signing class that will join the program in time for the 2016-17 season. The class includes eight women and two men with five incoming Bearcats hailing from Ohio. Two international student-athletes are also among this signing class.
// UP NEXT
Next up the Bearcats is a return trip to Lexington to compete in the Rod McCravy Memorial on the Kentucky campus. The meet runs January 22-23.

AKRON, Ohio - Former University of Akron standout and reigning World Champion Shawn Barber highlighted the performances at the fourth annual Akron Pole Vault Convention on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Stile Athletics Field House, capturing the men's title with a jump of 18-8 1/4 (5.70m).

Pole Mates

Politics junkies aren't the only ones obsessed with polls. US-based Greek athlete Ekaterini Stefanidi, who cleared 4.71m in her season-opener at the weekend, tells us about the only poles that anyone is really interested in.

Buy your pole

“I buy all of my poles from UCS, an athletics equipment company based out of Nevada. I love the poles and all the people I deal with in the company. I've been using their poles since I first went to Stanford University in 2008.
“Poles cost different amounts depending on size, but generally the standard price for a pole costs around $500. I'm lucky in that UCS have been great in giving me some poles for free and the Greek Athletics Federation have also paid for some poles.”

Love your pole

“I own ten to 12 competition poles which I take to Europe with me, but I use more poles than that in training because [Stefanidi's coach] Nick Hysong keeps many more in the shed in the back of his house where we train.
“Poles do differ in length and softness. Most vaulters have one smaller pole which they feel comfortable on during the competition but then the other poles tend to be a standard length but all varying in softness.
Ekaterini Stefanidi ()
"I don't talk to my poles... But I have talked to the bar!"
“All my poles, bar one, are 4.45m in length. Some girls might opt for 4.30m length pole or others 4.60m. I do have a favourite and a least favourite pole. However, my least favourite, which has a 20.6 flexibility is the one I got my PR with, so I might have to change my mind! My favourite pole has a 21.0 flex and is 4.30m in length. This is way easier to bend, but if I jumped on that pole, it would probably be two feet lower than my PR.
“Like any piece of equipment poles get old, but I have to say in 14 years as a vaulter, I've never broken a pole. Also, I sometimes jump on poles in training which are more than 20 years old, so they are very durable.
“Some people have asked me [whether] I talk to the pole and I have to say no, but I have talked to the bar! When I was younger my team-mates and I would talk and be nice to the bar as a joke. I’d never do that anymore – I’m not crazy! I would say I've had some pretty good bar luck, so maybe it worked.”

Fly your pole

“Transporting the poles – in a tube wrapped around with a long pole vault bag – via plane can be a huge pain. You have to pre-book them and they also have to be confirmed on your reservation. Star Alliance airlines tend to be very good in taking poles, though they are not cheap. For a European trip this can cost between 100-150 euros to transport and I’ve paid anywhere between 200-400 euros to transport them across the Atlantic.
“Thankfully, now that I am out of college my professional agent Karen [Locke] always books the poles on the flight. But in college, before I was a pro, I once remember taking about a week to fly from the US to Europe for the European Under-23 Championships [in Ostrava, where Stedanidi finished second] because one company no longer took the poles on board and then an interconnecting flight of another airline company wouldn't take them.
“Sometimes my poles might not turn up at the airport. I remember once travelling back to San Francisco from Europe and it was like, okay, they are probably stuck in Germany. After about a month-and-a-half half later I found that they had been sitting at San Francisco Airport all that time.”

38 Elite Athletes From 12 Countries Invited For 120th Running on April 18
BOSTON, MA, January 13, 2016– In its 31st year as principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, John Hancock Financial today announced the elite field for the 120th running of the Boston Marathon on April 18. A complete field list follows.
Boston Marathon champions Lelisa Desisa, Caroline Rotich, Geoffrey Mutai and Wesley Korir return to compete in the world's most historic marathon, and will be strongly challenged by an exceptional men's and women's international field. Combined, the team has won 16 Abbott World Marathon Majors, Olympic and IAAF World Championships medals, and 89 global marathons.

The chase for the 2016 men's title will be dynamic with six men in the field holding personal bests under 2:05, and 10 with lifetime bests under 2:06.
Two-time Boston Marathon champion Lelisa Desisa, of Ethiopia, headlines the group seeking his third title. Desisa ran four marathons last year, finishing second in Dubai, winning Boston, placing seventh at the World Championships, and third in New York City. Joining Desisa with course experience are champions Geoffrey Mutai and Wesley Korir, both of Kenya. Mutai holds two New York City titles, a Berlin crown, and en route to his 2011 Boston win, recorded a then-World Best time of 2:03:02. Korir has run Boston three times and is one of the most consistent marathoners in the world, having won Boston in 2012 and the Los Angeles Marathon twice.
Challenging the champions for the olive wreath are Yemane Adhane Tsegay, Wilson Chebet, and Michael Kipyego. Tsegay and Chebet finished second and third, respectively, in Boston last year. Tsegay has won eight global marathons, and claimed the silver medal at the 2015 IAAF World Championships Marathon. Chebet is a three-time winner in Amsterdam and a winner in Rotterdam. Kipyego brings Abbott World Marathon Majors experience as a past champion of the Tokyo Marathon.
Sub-2:05 men making their Boston debuts are Sammy Kitwara, who was last year's runner-up in Chicago and is also a former Rotterdam winner; Tsegaye Mekonnen, who ran to a 2:04:32 debut to earn the 2014 Dubai win; and Vienna and Amsterdam champion Getu Feleke. Feleke's wife, Olympic gold medalist Tiki Gelana, will also run Boston this year.
Another fast trio of Hayle Lemi Berhanu, Stephen Chebogut and Deribe Robi will also contend for the win. Berhanu is the 2015 Dubai and Warsaw champion, and also won Zurich in 2014. Chebogut is has won marathons in Eindhoven, Reims and Istanbul, while Robi was runner-up in Eindhoven last year and won Marrakesh in 2014. All three men ran their personal best marathon times in 2015.
U.S. elite men include Ian Burrell, who finished as the first American at the World Championships Marathon this past summer, and Girma Mecheso, who won the 2014 U.S. 20K Championships. Mecheso will be making his marathon debut.
San Diego and San Jose Half Marathon champion Jordan Chipangama from Zambia is also in the field. Chipangama lives and trains in the United States.
Additional international elites include 2011 Pan American gold medalist Solonei Da Silva from Brazil, Dutch 5,000m champion Abdi Nageeye, two-time Olympian Cutbert Nyasango from Zimbabwe, Mumbai champion Jackson Kiprop from Uganda, 2015 Shanghai champion Paul Lonyangata from Kenya, and young talent Abdelmajid El Hissouf from Morocco.
On the women's side, John Hancock has assembled a fast field with 10 women holding personal best times under 2:23:23. Tiki Gelana, the 2012 Olympic Marathon gold medalist, leads the field as she makes her Boston debut. Gelana, also a past champion of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, is seeking a place on the 2016 Ethiopian Olympic team with a strong Boston performance.
Also looking for a podium finish are Buzunesh Deba, Tirfe Tsegaye, Mamitu Daska and Atsede Bayisa. Deba finished second in Boston in 2014 and third last year, and is the champion of eight marathons held in the United States. Tsegaye has won marathons in Berlin, Tokyo, Paris and Dubai, while Daska has had success on the roads of Boston, claiming both the B.A.A. 10K and B.A.A. Half Marathon. She has also won marathons in Dubai, Houston and Frankfurt. Bayisa has won Chicago and Paris twice, as well as Saitama.
Bringing Boston experience to the race are 2015 champion Caroline Rotich, who has run Boston three times; three-time Olympian Jelena Prokopcuka, who is a two-time New York City winner and two-time Boston runner up; and Olympian Joyce Chepkirui, who won both Amsterdam and Honolulu last year, and finished tenth in Boston.
American Neely Spence Gracey will make her highly anticipated marathon debut in Boston. She comes to the race with a 69:59 half marathon personal best from her runner-up finish in Philadelphia last year. Sarah Crouch (formerly Sarah Porter) joins Spence Gracey as part of the American contingent. Crouch finished sixth in Chicago in 2014 and 12th last year. She also won the Tallahassee Marathon in 2015. From China, Lamei Sun will make her Boston debut. Sun won the Dongying Marathon and was runner-up in Beijing in 2012.
Kenyans Valentine Kipketer, Flomena Cheyech Daniel, and 22-year-old young talent Purity Cherotich Rionoripo will seek the title as well. Kipketer is a past champion of Amsterdam and Mumbai, while Daniel has won Paris, Vienna, Toronto and the Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2014. Rionoripo won the 2015 Lisbon Marathon and brings 68:29 half marathon speed to the race.
Ethiopians Tadelech Bekele, Fatuma Sado, and Fate Tola, who lives and trains in Germany, have impressive credentials as well. Bekele ran a 2:22:51 in Dubai in 2015; Sado is past winner of Los Angeles, Xiamen, Warsaw, Hamburg and Beijing; and Tola has won Vienna twice.

Robert Weir
Player Profile:
Robert Weir 1757956
Position: Assistant Coach
Robert Weir enters his third season as an assistant coach with Clemson track & field in 2015-16. Weir, a three-time Olympian for Great Britain and a veteran of over 20 seasons as a Division I coach, is in charge of all throwing events for the Tigers.
In Weir’s first season (2013-14), he coached Marcus Brown to an All-ACC performance in the men’s shot put. Brown threw over 18 meters for the first time and finished his career No. 3 on Clemson’s all-time performance list. In addition, Weir coached James Plummer to a school freshman record (168-3) in the men’s discus.
Plummer established the Clemson record in the discus in year two (2014-15), achieving a distance of 192-10 at the Shamrock Invitational to open outdoor season. Plummer was second-team All-ACC in the weight throw and discus as a sophomore.
Weir joined the Tigers after a one-year stop at the University of Hawaii. Prior to his time on Oahu, Weir spent two seasons (2011-12, 2012-13) as the throws coach for the nationally renowned Oregon track & field men’s and women’s program. He helped the Ducks win back-to-back Pac-12 men’s and women’s titles. In Eugene, he coached Jordan Stray to a 2011 NCAA Outdoor berth in the men’s hammer throw, and Laura Bobek and Tanner Harris to NCAA West Preliminary Round appearances.
Prior to his time at Oregon, Weir spent 16 years as an assistant and later the head coach at Stanford University (1993-2008). After beginning his tenure with the Cardinal as a part-time assistant, he worked his way up to the head coaching position for the men’s team from 2004-08. He coached many standouts at Stanford, including Michael Robertson who won the 2005 NCAA individual title in the discus. Robertson set a Stanford record in the event in 2007 when he won the USA crown.
As an assistant at Stanford, he was named the NCAA West Regional Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2001. In 2001 and 2002, he helped the Stanford men’s team to consecutive Pac-10 crowns, the program’s first since 1927. Weir coached seven-time All-American Jillian Camarena, the 2004 silver medalist at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the shot put. He also helped Camarena to a bronze medal finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials that year.
Under Weir’s watch, Stanford’s throwing records were all but broken. He coached three women’s hammer throwers to school records in the event during the 2000s, culminating with a throw of nearly 220 feet by Sarah Hopping in 2006. He coached All-Americans in the women’s discus (Summer Pierson, 2000) and women’s javelin (Allison Beatty, 1999). Pierson went on to compete at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials. On the men’s side, Omer Inan was a three-time All-American in the discus and established the school record in 2002.
Weir made an impact as one of the top instructors in the men’s hammer throw during his early years as a Stanford assistant. He coached Dave Popejoy to the school record and a berth in the 1996 Olympic Games for Team USA. Weir also coached Justin Strand, a three-time All-American, and Adam Connolly, 1998 All-American in both the weight and hammer throws.
One of his top coaching achievements was mentoring Dartmouth graduate Adam Nelson, who relocated to the Bay area to train with Weir while he was an assistant at Stanford. Nelson won the USA Championship and an Olympic silver medal in the shot put in 2000 under Weir’s instruction.
Weir began his coaching career as an assistant at Brown University in Rhode Island from 1985-88. During that same time frame, he played in the Canadian Football League for six seasons (1986-92).
He has significant experience at the highest level of track & field, both as an athlete and as a coach. After a decorated collegiate career at Southern Methodist University that saw him win three NCAA individual titles and claim 10 All-America accolades, he went on to become a 12-time National Champion in his native country of Great Britain. He competed in the Olympic Games in 1984, 1996 and 2000, serving as team captain in Sydney, Australia. He also competed at the IAAF World Championships for Great Britain on six occasions.
Weir has extensive experience as an international coach as well. He was the throws coach for Team USA at the 2005 and 2007 IAAF World Championships. He also coached the throws for Great Britain’s team at the 2009 IAAF World Junior Championships. Weir was the head coach for Team USA at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing, China.
A native of Birmingham, England, Weir earned his undergraduate degree from SMU in 1985. He participated in the 1997 World’s Strongest Man competition.
