Al Cantello
AlCantello.jpeg
Al Cantello (born 9 June 1931) is a retired Americanjavelin thrower as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently the coach of the men's distance running program at the United States Naval Academy where he has been since 1963.
He graduated from La Salle University in Philadelphia in 1955. In 1959, he set the world record in the javelin and won the bronze medal at the 1959 Pan American Games and made the US Olympic team in 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Despite having the second longest throw (79.72m) in the games during the qualifying rounds, he finished tenth (with an official throw of 74.7m). During the Rome Olympics, he suffered from dysentery and was not permitted to throw the American-style javelin, but has stated "he has no regrets". Cantello won the AAU title in 1959 and 1960, and held a world ranking of No. 4 for both years. In 1964, Sport magazine named Cantello to its all-time track and field team and voted him the world's greatest competitor in the javelin. He was known for his form, in which he would throw his whole body into the throw and end in a semi-handstand.[1]
His personal best throw, with the old javelin type, was 86.04 metres, achieved in June 1959 in Compton.[2]
He has coached at the United States Naval Academy for more than 40 years where he was named NCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year three times. He is known by his runners for his creative use of the English language. While at La Salle, Cantello was twice named to the Track and Field All-American team. He won the javelin contest at four straight Mid-Atlantic Conference Track and Field Championships and three times won the javelin toss at the Penn Relays.
In 2013 Cantello was inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches Hall of Fame along with Ron Allice, Dennis Craddock, Jim Hunt, Curtis Frye and Paul Olsen.[3]

Release: 04/04/2016
SYDNEY, Australia – Stanford’s Steven Solomon won the 400-meter final at the Australian national track and field championships Saturday and positioned himself for inclusion on the Aussie Olympic team.

Solomon, who is taking a year off from school to train for the 2016 Rio Games, ran 45.50, but missed the IAAF Olympic qualifying standard by 0.10. Solomon has until July 11 to reach the 45.40 standard. If he doesn’t, he still could get to Rio. Those next in the world rankings get preference as the Olympic field is filled.

By placing among the top three at the national championships, Solomon earned a spot in the Australian 4x400 relay pool – five will probably be named to the final team. However, Australia still needs to qualify. Australia was 12th in the 4x400 at last year’s World Relay Championships and only the top eight advanced automatically to Rio. The rest must build a world ranking based on the aggregate of their two fastest times during the qualifying period, and teams will fill the Olympic field in that order.

Solomon seems to have a good chance to reach Rio in both events, even if he doesn’t improve his times. Australia’s team will be named by a panel on July 12 and previous experience of athletes is a factor in the selection process. In 2012, Solomon became the first Aussie man in 24 years to make an Olympic men’s 400 final, and he has been a national-team relay member at two World Championships.

In 2012, Solomon competed in both events in London, at age 19. He ran a lifetime best 44.97 in the 400 semifinals and was eighth in the final. The relay team ran 3:03.17, but failed to advance.

At nationals, Solomon opened with a 46.55 in Thursday’s first round and followed with a 46.22 in Friday’s semifinal. Solomon captured the final by more than a half-second. It was his fourth national title and his 45.50 is the second-fastest outdoor time in the world this year.

Solomon, a human biology major, will be a senior academically and in his final season of eligibility when returning to Stanford in the fall. His 45.36 in winning the 2014 Australian championship in Melbourne counts as the Stanford record. However, a faster time this year would not count because Solomon is not competing for Stanford this season.

In 2014, Solomon ran the 400 leg of the Cardinal’s winning distance medley relay team at the NCAA Indoor Championships. His 45.75 split on the Albuquerque Convention Center’s 200-meter banked track boosted Stanford into a lead it would not relinquish. The team included Marco Bertolotti, Luke Lefebure, and Michael Atchoo and represents Stanford track and field’s most recent NCAA title, indoors or outdoors.

Solomon went on to finish second at the 2014 Pac-12 outdoor championships. A hamstring tear suffered during the 2014 Commonwealth Games semifinals, combined with other health issues, prevented him from competing collegiately in 2015. This is his first racing since 2014.

Bears Set To Host 122nd Big Meet

Cal & Stanford To Compete In Annual Showcase
By Cal Athletics on Wed, April 06, 2016

Print
BERKELEY --- On Saturday, April 9, California & Stanford will renew their rivalry at Edwards Stadium in the 122nd edition of the Big Meet.
The Bears will be working on their fourth consecutive victory over the Cardinal in the men's competition - which dates back to 1893 - while the California women will look to earn their second victory in three seasons and 13th overall since the series began in 1980.
"The Big Meet, one of the oldest track meets in the country, has a history & legacy that both universities take pride in," Director of Track Tony Sandoval said when asked about the significance of the competition.
"Many an Olympian or national champion began his or her emergence by competing head to head in this dual meet. Every event, every point and every athlete matters in this total team effort.  The fans and alumni come from all over to enjoy this version of the Cal-Stanford rivalry!"
NOTES & FIGURES
  • Men's Series: California leads Stanford, 69-50-2
  • Women's Series: Stanford leads California, 23-12
  • California owns the largest winning streak in the series (men's team won 25 straight from 1972-96) and the widest margin of victory in both series (85 points for the women in 1980; 81 points for the men in 1983)
  • Since the women's Big Meet began in 1980, there have been 19 competition sweeps - 11 by Cal (last time: 2014) and 8 by Stanford (last time: 2012)
2015 BIG MEET
In the 121st edition of the Big Meet, junior Thomas Joyce led the California men to its third straight win over Stanford, 101-62. Joyce won the 1500 Meters & 3000 Meters on the day, setting a 1500 school and Big Meet record (3:39.43) & a 3000 PR (8:00.50) in the process. On the women's side, Stanford was able to defeat Cal, 111-49.
In total, the Bears were able to record 14 event victories - 11 for the men and three for the women.
Last season's full recap can be found by clicking HERE.
