Alan Gaylord

Alan Gaylord (class of 1957) – Gaylord was a member of the track and cross country teams at Paso Robles High School. He finished 3rd in the 1957 California State High School Championships in the mile at 4:24.00 and held the school record from 1957-1967. He earned an athletic scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley where he was a 4-year letterman in track and cross country, cross country team captain, undefeated in track dual meets as a sophomore, AAWU (PAC -8) 3-mile conference champion, and set conference record in 1960 at 14:12.00. That record was later broken by Steve Prefontaine. He also competed in 10,000 meter race at 1998 World Masters Meet. Paso Robles Daily News

Doris Louise Gaylord

Modified: Friday, Sep 4th, 2015

Doris Louise Gaylord passed away into the presence of the Lord on Sunday morning, Aug. 23, 2015, in Citrus Heights. Born to Paul Payne and Rosa Belle Smith of Avery, Neb., Nov. 8, 1918, Doris was approaching her 97th birthday.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Melvin (Mel) Gaylord, one older sister, and three older brothers.

Doris and Mel honeymooned to Paso Robles in June of 1938 and over the next seven years had six children. From 1952 until1970, they owned and operated the K&M Market in partnership with Mel’s cousin, Kenneth Morehouse. Retiring from the grocery business while still in their SO’s freed them to golf, bike, and travel — camping and hiking throughout the Western states and Canada. During their early retirement years they established a small business called the Gaylord Nut Packing Company. Operating out of their basement, the two of them processed walnuts they harvested at a farm in Adelaida and then delivered them to grocery stores throughout the area.

After Mel passed away in 1981, Doris sold the large home they had built and she moved to Sierra Bonita on the east side of Paso where she lived until 2007. Never one to be idle, she continued oil painting, gardening, enjoying the ocean and spending fun times with family and friends.

She traveled to the East Coast and went to Europe twice. She remained involved at the Live Oak Church where she had been a member for over 60 years. At the age of 88, Doris was still volunteering weekly delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, stocking shelves at Loaves & Fishes and hostessing a home bible study. Once a month she ministered to young boys through the California Youth Authority’s “Birthday Club” and was always available to her neighbors to run errands or take them to appointments. They could feel safe with Doris at the wheel. She never had an accident or ever received a violation ticket in all her 73 years of driving!

In 2007 Doris sold her Paso Robles home and her car and moved to an independent living facility in Citrus Heights that was near a daughter, three granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren. By March of this year she required more care and moved across the street to a memory-care facility where she continued to love and be loved until her passing. Her contagious smile and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Doris is survived by 77 direct descendants (84 including adopted and step-grand and great-grandchildren): her six children, Alan (Janice) Gaylord, Portland, Ore.; Evelyn Muir, Missoula, Mont.; Gary (Judy) Gaylord, Albuquerque, N.M.; Patricia (Bill) Botts), Reeds Spring, Mo.; Nancy (Steve) Hammer, Templeton; and Beverly (Jim) Steerman, Fair Oaks. Doris is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

GG (as her great-grandchildren affectionately call her) was loved greatly in life because she unselfishly and unconditionally loved them first — and loved God most. Those who loved her in life will miss her in death but rejoice that she has finally been set free through her faith in Christ to enter her eternal home and move into the glorious room Jesus has prepared for her.

There will be a viewing at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home on Friday, Sept. 11 between 4 and 8 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 12, at 9 a.m., a service will be held at the Live Oak Church, 1521 Oak St., in Paso Robles. The interment will follow at the Paso Robles District Cemetery at approximately 10:30 a.m. Following the interment all are invited to gather back at the Live Oak Church for a time of fellowship with friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Doris’ memory may be made to Hospice - Sutter Homecare, Roseville, CA or to the Paso Robles “Meals on Wheels” or “Loaves & Fishes”.

Four Teams Move Into Prime Position In NCAA DIII XC Regional Rankings

By Tyler Mayforth, USTFCCCA
October 18, 2016

NEW ORLEANS— Inter-regional battles — like those that transpired in New Jersey, Ohio and Washington — dotted the landscape in NCAA Division III Cross Country this past weekend. And in turn, those affected the most recent Regional Rankings when they were released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Four new teams moved into position to nab an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on November 19, which go to the top-2 teams at each regional championship, while another took over a top spot in the men’s rankings.
QUICK LINKSRegional Rankings Summary PDF | Men’s Rankings | Women’s Rankings | Rankings Central
We’ll start with the women from Nebraska Wesleyan, who were the biggest movers in the rankings this week going from 9th to 2nd in the Central Region. The Prairie Wolves surprised everybody at the Tori Neubauer Invitational as they finished runner-up behind host UW-La Crosse and beat the “B” team from DI Minnesota. NWU put its entire scoring lineup inside the top-25 and was led by Jamie Larsen (9th overall).
Staying in the women’s rankings, Ithaca jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 in the Atlantic Region with SUNY Oneonta right on its heels at No. 3. The Bombers were runner-ups at the Rowan Border Battle and Taryn Cordani, their standout sophomore, was runner-up to Amy Regan.
Also in the women’s rankings, Colorado College went from No. 3 to No. 2 in the West Region. The Tigers recently rolled to a team title at the Lewis & Clark Invitational, where they put five in the top-10 of a 42-person race.
Over in the men’s rankings, Emory leapfrogged Christopher Newport to become the top dog in the South/Southeast Region. The Eagles took part in the Rowan Border Battle and took 7th — 20 points shy of 6th in a loaded field — while CNU hosted its own smaller invitational and won handily.
Elsewhere in the men’s rankings, Ohio Northern moved up to No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region behind Calvin. The Polar Bears fared well against a stacked field at the Kollege Sports Invitational hosted by UW-Oshkosh. ONU placed 5th out of 37 teams.
These are the penultimate Regional Rankings of the 2016 season. There won’t be any next week and the final ones will come after the big conference championship weekend.
After that it’s time to figure out who goes to NCAAs when the NCAA DIII Regional Championships are held around the nation on November 12.
Be sure to find out how the National Coaches’ Polls changed when they’re announced tomorrow on a LIVE edition of "Cross Country U" at noon ET on USTFCCCA.org.

Pac-12 cross country teams dominate latest USTFCCCA national polls

SAN FRANCISCO – Paced by COLORADO taking over the top spot in the women’s poll, the Pac-12 has a national-best seven women’s teams and six men’s teams in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings on Tuesday.
On the women’s side, no other conference has more than three teams in the top 30 poll, while the Pac-12 boasts three in the top 5 with No. 1 COLORADO garnering eight first-place votes, No. 2 WASHINGTON capturing the remaining four first-place votes, and OREGON climbing four spots to No. 5. The Buffaloes and Ducks finished first and second at last week’s Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., and the Huskies cruised to victory at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
No. 11 STANFORD and No. 17 UTAH remained in the ranks, while UCLA and CALIFORNIA jumped from receiving votes to Nos. 23 and 25, respectively. The seven women’s teams in the top 30 are a season-high for the Pac-12.
On the men’s side, no other conference has more than four teams in the rankings, while the Pac-12 has four in the top 10. The STANFORD men, runners-up at the Nuttycombe Invitational, made the most noteworthy leap as the Cardinal moved up nine spots to No. 2, just one position - and one point - ahead of league rival and Pre-National Invite champion No. 3 OREGON.
Along with No. 7 COLORADO and No. 25 WASHINGTON, both UCLA and WASHINGTON STATE enjoyed significant movement as the Bruins improved 17 places to No. 10, while the Cougars went from receiving votes to No. 15. UCLA appears in the top 10 for the first time since 2014 and WSU has its highest ranking since 1998.
Individually, OREGON senior Edward Cheserek continued his reign as he won for the 15th time in his last 17 races with his second Pre-Nationals Invitational individual title, along with a win at the race in 2014.
Just over one week remains until the 2016 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships hosted by Arizona at Randolph North Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday, Oct. 28. It marks the second time the event will be held in Tucson, the most recent coming in 2005.
The NCAA Mountain and West Regionals will be held Friday, Nov. 11 in Logan, Utah and Sacramento, Calif., respectively, with teams advancing to the 2016 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Pac-12 will be looking to add to its distinction as the winningest conference in NCAA Cross Country history this fall as current league members boast the most combined team national championships (27 – 16 men/11 women) and individual titles (28 – 25 men/3 women) of any league in the country.

Top-Ranked Teams Jockey For Position In NCAA DIII Men’s XC Poll

By Tyler Mayforth, USTFCCCA
October 19, 2016

NEW ORLEANS— The back and forth between North Central (Ill.) and SUNY Geneseo continues atop the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll and shows no signs of slowing down.

It all started back in Week 3 when the Knights overtook the Cardinals.
The following week, North Central (Ill.) and SUNY Geneseo were tied atop the poll with four first-place votes. That was the first time in the history of the men’s poll that it ever happened.
Then last week, the Knights pressed ahead and secured five first-place votes to the Cardinals’ three.
What about this week? Well, with two polls to go until the 2016 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, North Central (Ill.) is back to No. 1 after a strong performance at the Kollege Town Sports Invitational this past weekend.
The Cardinals own five of the eight first-place votes (SUNY Geneseo has the other three) and regain the top billing it had four times this season. North Central (Ill.) was ranked No. 1 in the Preseason, Week 1, Week 2 and Week 4.

CHECK OUT THE WOMEN’S NATIONAL COACHES’ POLL
SUNY Geneseo slipped to No. 2, three points behind the Cardinals. No. 3 Williams, No. 4 UW-Eau Claire and No. 5 MIT round out the top-5 once again.
North Central (Ill.) had a great opportunity to impress this past weekend and did just that. Going up against three teams ranked in the top-15, including defending national champion Blugolds, the Cardinals steamrolled the competition. North Central (Ill.) put all seven runners inside the top-20 — five in the top-10 — and scored a miniscule 24 points. Zack Plank cruised to a nine-second win over UW-Eau Claire’s Darin Lau, while Ethan Adlfinger and Al Baldonado went 3-4.
The Knights had an equally as tough road to travel at the Rowan Border Battle and came out on top, although not as convincingly. SUNY Geneseo beat three top-15 teams when it notched 71 total points (MIT finished runner-up with 127). Isaac Garcia-Cassani nabbed the individual win in 23:19.9 and the Knights had four other runners in the top-30.
There were a few teams that exceeded their projections this weekend, namely Calvin and Ohio Northern. Both were rewarded with bumps in the poll.
The Knights finished 3rd at the Kollege Town Sports Invitational behind aforementioned North Central (Ill.) and UW-Eau Claire. Four of Calvin’s runners found their way inside the top-25, led by Zac Nowicki in 8th place. The Knights went from 17th last week to 12th this week.
The Polar Bears also ran in Wisconsin and finished 5th in the team standings. Kase Schalois (29th), Samuel Boyd (30th) and Ian McVey (32nd) all finished close to each other to thwart any advancing teams. Ohio Northern jumped from No. 28 to No. 19 in the poll because of that effort.
Five spots down from the Polar Bears we find Rowan. The Owls check in at No. 24 and are ranked for only the third time in program history. Rowan took advantage of its home course at the Border Battle and placed 8th as a team.
Just like the Owls, five other teams joined the poll this week: No. 31 Connecticut College, No. 32 Whittier, No. 33 Nebraska Wesleyan, No. 34 Washington and Lee as well as No. 35 Occidental.
We could very well see most of these teams come November 19 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park for the NCAA DIII XC Championships. Before that, however, they must run the conference championships and regional championships.

Hi Runners,
Can you visualize the McInnes course?
Can you close your eyes and remember all if it?
You were awesome on our course - never having lost a league or dual meet there.
Do you still remember Oct ta male ---? Can you say it?
And do you remember the meaning of AJFA?  “Aggressive, Just Fearless, Awesome”- or something like that.
The MCAL meet, still at IVC, comes up on November 9th.
Run -
